View Full Version : Creepy Cell Phone Call...

So, I live on Fort Knox and at 6:15 tonight, I felt my cell phone going off but heard my wife's ringtone. I thought I must've had her phone but then noticed our phones were ringing at the exact same time. The phone number was a long number starting with 509 so I just didn't answer. A minute later, both phones signaled a voice mail. I checked it and it was a foreign language thing so I just assumed there was some glitch out in cell-phone land and didn't think anything of it.
Just a few minutes ago, my wife got notified that it was a blast to almost all cell phones on post of an angry message in arabic. Those who live just off post did not get it. Some who work with her but are on a training mission to Fort Bragg, North Carolina however did get it.
It's a cell phone call and was only like 5-10 seconds long but it's just very creepy. I left the military because I wanted to leave the army, terror, and all the "what ifs" behind yet something like this happens and it all comes rushing back.
Hopefully it was just a glitch but how could multiple army posts get hit with a cell phone call at the exact same time? And my phone number is from in the boonies Missouri so it's just weird.
Sucks such little things are so nerve wrecking these days.

I did my basic training at Ft Knox back in the 70s. Tough ass place.
So if you left the Army, why are you still living on post?

Wife is still in.
And the place is changing a lot. They're ending training here and moving in the personnel command. Ranges going away, big shiny buildings coming in. I've been told the building they're putting up for them is supposed to be one of the largest in all Kentucky.
Poor ol' Fort Knox is a changing.

Do they still make people march up "Agony, Misery and Defeat"?

Haha... I don't think they even renamed them. Still there and still holding true to their namesake.
I go out that way to go fishing and race down those hills really fast. They're so steep, my wife doesn't even let me go that way when she's in the car. I can only imagine having to march it.
That is very unnerving. How do you make that happen? You say it happened on several bases all at the same time?

I haven't gotten many details yet, they're still investigating it. The Military Police station got the call as well so presumably there will be enough chatter about it that they'll look into it.

That was where I'm at. The number traces back to Haiti but it's not hard to fake a number through the computer. It came over cell phones and with everyone in the military moving constantly, everyone has different area codes on their numbers. It couldn't have been based on a series of numbers so it had to be proximity but, if it was somehow blasted through the local tower, how they got hit at Fort Bragg (unless all of Fort Bragg got hit as well)? I don't know.
Unnerving is the perfect word to describe it. It's most likely nothing but just makes me a bit uncomfortable and then the mind gets to running.

What it makes me think about is the fact that cell phones are now being used to trigger Al Qaeda bombs, as was the case in the last attempt that the Brits snuffed out. It isnt beyond the realm of imagination that they would include some type of "death to the infidels" message to enhance the terror impact.

Time to raise the "terror alert" color to flaming pink and run to home depot for some duct tape.
It's a frigging prank by a computer nerd.

Yeah, but to take over at least one tower to be able to blast a message? That seems advanced beyond their capabilities, I'd think. Only logical justification is that it was some screwy glitch. If someone has actually cracked our cell phone system, imagine the impacts that could have.

:~ohyah!: Isn't flaming pink the point at which we start trapping clean air in trashbags and stashing them away? Duct tape was orange back in the day, wasn't it?
Gosh, so unprepared!

I better go check mine for some encrypted message which will reveal the prize in the Cracker Jack Box.:spit:
Re: all this "terror talk". The next time those ****ing ragheads do something stupid we just need to turn their homes into molten glass. **** sending our boys over there to get killed.
A stealth and a nuke!
The disturbing part is the technological implications.
For a long time I have thought the next big terrorist attack will be through technology. Interrupt banking. destroy records, expose military secrets, shut down critical parts of the Internet. Maybe spread a global virus. Using sound as a weapon.

509 is a state of Washington area code not that it means anything.
Way creepy tho.

Like I said, I just deleted everything and didn't think anything of it at the time.
The number it came through as was 509-350-86969 so it's just strange. I figure it has to be done through a computer system so masking the number wouldn't be that hard. As is though, the only country code possibility is 509 which is Haiti. That's probably where the assumption came from.

Just curious what you mean by "access"?
My knowledge of the American cell phone system is almost nil.

Really that's all I know and the number I just posted. I don't really expect an explanation as to what could've done it (if it was a glitch, we'll hear nothing more and if it were actually an incident of any sort, it would be classified) but would be interested if someone knows how such a thing could happen.
And for Garcia, I didn't immediately put on my tin foil hat but the incident was just unnerving because I don't know how to explain it.
