View Full Version : Dunta Robinson fined $50,000 for hit on Desean Jackson; James Harrison fined $75,000 for 2 hits

Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, said Tuesday morning that harsher fines and possible suspensions for flagrant hits could be coming.

The league wasted no time, as Tuesday afternoon it fined Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison $75,000, and New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson $50,000 apiece for helmet-to-helmet hits they delivered in games Sunday.

"Future offenses will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension," Anderson said in a letter to each player.

Harrison is considered a repeat offender. He was previously fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness against Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young in a Sept. 19 game.

Harrison sidelined two Cleveland Browns wide receivers Sunday with head injuries after jarring hits. An NFL spokesman said one of the tackles, on Joshua Cribbs, was legal. The Browns were more upset about Harrison's hit on Mohamed Massaquoi, which the league reviewed.

After the Steelers' 28-10 victory, Harrison stated matter-of-factly that his intention is to hurt opposing players who roam near him.

"I don't want to injure anybody," Harrison said. "There's a big difference between being hurt and being injured. You get hurt, you shake it off and come back the next series or the next game. I try to hurt people."

Meriweather was fined for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Baltimore Ravens tight end Todd Heap during the Patriots' overtime victory.

Heap lay on the ground for several minutes, left the game, then returned before halftime. It was "one of those hits that shouldn't happen," Heap said.

Anderson was asked specifically about that hit during a radio show Tuesday morning.

"That in our view is something that was flagrant, it was egregious," Anderson said. "And effective immediately, that's going to be looked at a very aggressive level, which could include suspension without pay."

Robinson and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson were knocked out of their game after brutal collision in which the Falcons cornerback launched himself head first to make a tackle. Both players sustained concussions.

Pisses me off he never gets flagged. His hit on Massaquoi was blatant and brutal. I don't know why the referees wouldn't flag him for it.

So did I. He led with his shoulder. It could be that the NFL fined him for hitting him too hard. His helmet slams into Jacksons shoulder.

Like I said in the other thread; The defense has to let the receivers catch the ball anymore. Catch touch them before hte ball gets there and can't hit them when it gets there. It has to be afterwards.

He got fined because he led with the crown of his helmet into Cribbs' head.

Yeah, I thought Robinson's hit was legal.

That was more shoulder + side of helmet rather than leading with the helmet.

Egregious missile shots to the head are not good, but ya...I'm not sure I care for watching linebackers diving at the ankles of receivers going across the middle. It's a privilege to play in the league, and I'd say their salaries more than make up for the risk of injury. Pretty soon they're gonna have a faircatch-halo around every offensive player that lasts for 5 steps or a football move. ****ing bull****.

Nope. He was not defenceless, helmet to helmet is legal.

Dunta's hit was illegal because it was on a defenseless player, and he launched himself, not because it was helmet to helmet.

Harrison is just a total POS, and is more than deserving of any suspension coming his way.

League is selling photo of James Harrison's illegal hit

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/19/league-is-selling-photo-of-james-harrisons-illegal-hit/

The folks at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh have uncovered an interesting angle regarding the hit that resulted in the imposition of a $75,000 fine against Steelers linebacker James Harrison.

The league currently is selling photos of the incident involving Harrison and Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, at anywhere from $15.95 to $249.95.

Sorry, but the NFL can't have it both ways. If the league wants to legislate dirty hits out of the game, the NFL should do nothing to profit from those dirty hits.

For now, the NFL is.

UPDATE: It appears that the spike in traffic from PFT Planet has crashed the servers of the NFL Photo Store.

I have plenty of posts through the span of 2009's 4 win season. Was right there when the Broncos defeated the Chiefs at home and was right there when the Chiefs pummeled the Broncos at home. You don't get as many posts as I have by hiding when the team isn't doing well. It simply is not possible. Am I posting more this year? Absolutely, and I would have said as much before all of this. It has been a riot watching you guys rationalize the Chiefs year.

You also keep mentioning the photography thread...75 posts in that thread over 3 whole years. That must be where all my posts are right?

So basically if a WR can run around in a manner that makes him unable to defend himself, you can never hit him. So basically all WR have to do is run full speed while looking at QB. Never look at any dbacks because they cant hit you anyway.

Football becoming a joke.

The good news is you can buy a picture of James Harrison's hit on Massaquoi right from the NFL's photo store.

http://www.replayphotos.com/nflphotostore/2010-11-season-print/james-harrison-mohamed-massaquoi_321187.cfm

Now THIS is why the NFL pisses me off, talk out of one side of their mouth about how important it is to keep players safe, then try to line their pockets from an act they're allegedly so concerned about.

What is there to rationalize about the Chiefs this year? If they play a last place team, they might win. If they play anyone else, they'll lose. They played a lot of last place teams to start the season, so they won a few games. The last few weeks they didn't and they lost.

Seems pretty simple to me.
