Earlier today, the NFL awarded exclusive on-field apparel rights to Nike. We spoke to Brand President Charlie Denson, who wouldn't confirm financials, but did drill deeper into what consumers can expect.

Q: Why did you do this deal?

Denson: When you think about Nike and the NFL and what we both represent, it's a great opportunity. We think the U.S. marketplace still has some growth potential and they are a great partner to continue to position the brand here in the U.S. What better place than the NFL to show our brand on the field, in the training room, in the gym and of course off the field, the lifestyle aspect.

Q: Why didn't you want the hat business that went to New Era?

Denson: We feel really good about the pieces of the puzzle that we got, but the hat business is certainly an interesting one and is a big deal for New Era.

Q: Do you think the American Needle case could possibly negate this deal?

Denson: We've watched that case with great interest and at this point in time we're not taking it into specific consideration. We've entered into this deal that starts in 2012 and hopefully by that time it will be resolved and we'll be able to go full speed ahead.

Q: Many fans want to know how much you are going to change the jersey. Will it be similar to what you've done in college with pretty significant overhauls?

Denson: We plan on changing the NFL jersey dramatically just like we've done with the college programs, using new thinking and the greatest technology available. The NFL program hasn't had the same type of advancement in recent years.

Q: Any comments on Nike [NKE 82.155 0.175 (+0.21%)] reaching an all-time high today?

Denson: You never know what's going to happen in the market. But we hope people perceive us as a growth company.

I think he is speaking more about technology in terms of material/fabric, etc... The NFL has a fairly strict policy about changing design. I think you have to submit changes to the league a year in advance. For example, the Broncos changed from Wilson to Nike in 1996, but could not use the new Nike design until 1997.

I make more than enough to afford a $300 jersey, but I'd donate that money to charity before I ever considered buying one. **** that.

Replicas are fine for me and my kids. Hell, I've recycled old jerseys and honestly get much more enjoyment out of the old vintage jerseys and T's I've found online and in Denver thrift stores.

Nothing against anyone who wants to spend their hard earned money in that manner. I'm sure I make frivolous purchases as much as anyone. There's just something about the notion of the NFL selling people $4 worth of fabric for $300 that rubs me the wrong way.

Oregon is the first thing I thought of - a team with 10 to 15 jersey variants. That way, fans will buy the home jersey, the alternate home jersey, the special club mix jersey, etc, etc. That is why they think there is a growth segment domestically.

I saw some special about some new technology Nike was developing. It had something to do with Oregon, but in essence it was a protective and breathable material that pretty much alleviated the need for protective pads in pants. They talked about how they let the players have input on jersey design. I couldn't find exactly what I'm talking about, but I found this which is likely what you will see in their NFL jerseys:

Global creative director for Nike apparel Todd Van Horne was on hand at the university to show the advancements made with the new Oregon Ducks uniforms. They include, among other things:
Nike Pro Combat–uniforms are “locked down and battle-ready”
Laminated Numbers, not tackle twill. They will not absorb moisture, keeping the jerseys light
Laminate anti-abrasion shoulder reinforcement in the form of wings, rather than last season’s diamond plating
Zoned non-critical areas to lighten the whole uniform
Titanium D-Rings on belt rather than steel
All in all, the new uniforms are 25% lighter and have a more “shrink-wrapped fit.” The jerseys alone have been reduced from 7.46 ounces to 5.5. And of course, in keeping with past years, the Oregon Ducks players had a great deal of input on what would and would not go into the 2009’s new Oregon Ducks football uniforms. All in all, the players will have 80 different uniform combinations to choose from each Saturday.

Same deal back a few years ago with the "new" NHL's look with the revamped Reebok jerseys that were supposed to be form fitting and made from lighter materials. They were crap and a marketing disaster. Most teams have reversed back to retro jerseys with the old style collars and loose fitting materials. Which is what most fans like.

What XXL fan carrying a couple extra dozen pounds of waistline want's to shell out close to 2 bills for a form fitting jersey that makes you look like you're wearing a belly shirt?

Ish. What they've done to Michigan's classic uniforms is a travesty. The road jerseys with that stupid piping around the back? Awful.

Nike was smart enough to leave the basic, classic look intact. They did the same with Penn State, which was also a smart move. But the multi-colored numbers on the Miami jerseys last year? awful. The different designs in the second color on some of the others? Terrible. Those Boise uniforms in the opening game were atrocious. And I cannot forgive what they've done to my Griz.

I've had mixed luck w/ Nike stuff...although I really love most of their styles. Usually shoes hold up well but the apparel and other goods are a mixed bag. I've had some high dollar Nike polos that have lost color, shrunk without being dried, etc.

On the other hand, Under Armour stuff is top quality in every situation I've seen.
