Obama nominated this guy to the Fed and the Republicans in the Senate have been blocking his appointment. Now, the guy wins a Nobel Prize in economics, but as the article points out:

Senate Republicans have objected to what they see as Diamond's limited experience in dissecting the inner workings of the national economy.

Hilarious! Just more humor from the Right. I'd love to listen to these Republican Senators explain to Mr. Diamond all the places where his education is lacking.

From the article:

Diamond, 70, is an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an authority on Social Security, pensions and taxation.

They just can't stomach anyone with an ounce of intelligence because they might expose the core of the GOP as being a bunch of backwoods/backward dumbasses.

Federal Reserve board nominee Peter Diamond was honored along with Dale Mortensen and Christopher Pissarides economist won the 2010 Nobel economics prize Monday for developing a theory that helps explain how many people can remain unemployed despite a large number of job vacancies.

Their work resulted in the so-called Diamond-Mortensen-Pissarides model, a frequently used tool to estimate how unemployment benefits, interest rates, the efficiency of employment agencies and other factors can affect the labor market.

"One conclusion is that more generous unemployment benefits give rise to higher unemployment and longer search times,"

WOW..... that must of been hard to figure that out... Hilarious!

BUT the Democrats said longer unemployment benefits has noting to do with higher unemployment.......!Booya!

Actually the work he was doing along with Mortensen and Pissarides is about "search cost" (defined as "The costs to a buyer or seller of acquiring information about prices and quantities available in a market." especial when asymmetric information is present)and why there is a delay in market efficiency of matching buyer and seller. It has outgrowth of transaction cost theory and has application to explain why there is delay in the labor market between employers and employees finding each other.

Who cares? Paul Krugman won a nobel prize for economics. Hell, Obama won the peace prize. Apparently, you can just win these things if you open the right cracker jack box.

The nobel prize is nothing more than a self serving parade. It doesn't carry any of the weight it used to. It's nothing but a press release and a prize now.

Taco John

And just to clarify, I don't know if Diamond is qualified to run the US/World economy or not. I suspect not. But just to throw out that he won a nobel prize as a qualification - well that's shallow and disingenuous. It's a prize that has discredited itself, and only maintains its credibility through partisan politics. Leftists love the award. Right leaners find the thing to be pretty well a leftist circle jerk. It's like Fox News handing out a Coulter Award, and having someone here touting that person for power because they received the award.

Uh, it doesn't work like that.

The Federal Reserve Chair is more powerful than the president, and it's the most political position in the world. You can be damned sure that the Republicans aren't just going to hand over that tremendous amount of power just because the guy won some lefty award.

Taco John

And for my part, I don't care who gets nominated to an institution that I'd rather see abolished. The Federal Reserve is the source of America's economic woes, not the solution.

Here's why the Republican Senators say they are blocking him. They say he has, "...limited experience in dissecting the inner workings of the national economy." That is idiotic bull****. And that is the point of the thread.

We have now gotten to the point where we not only prefer ignorance in American politics, we celebrate it. They block a Nobel winning MIT professor of economics from the Fed and put up Angles, O'Donnell and Palin as candidates for office.

Is there no one who will weep for my country?

Try reading. The answer was already given.

I personally don't like academia running the country. They don't have practical experience in many cases.

I guess I should have separated those two things with a period so that you could understand. My bad.

Paul Krugman deserved the Noble based on his worked with economics. He has produced a lot of ground breaking work in his career in that field. If you have an issue with his takes when he vears off course into politics, that's a different matter.

Speaking of academia, Robert Reich made an interesting point on his blog the other day. He says that the economy is only going to get worse if the Republicans take over and are allowed to continue their policy of cutting taxes on the rich and cutting spending. Simply put, his theory is that our economy is based on consumerism. The more we all buy, the better we all do. What the Repug policies do is force the average American to stop spending, which is what they're doing now. Which is why nothing is improving. People are hunkering down, putting money into savings, and doing without. As the rich have already shown, they have no intention of investing in American jobs, American infrastructure or American nuts and bolts industry. They make far more just playing the paper game in the market. Why should they care where the jobs are? They cash in no matter what. Like the saying goes these days, the only thing that matters is the shareholders.

It's like the old story of the sun and the North wind having an argument about who can get a man to take off his coat. The North wind blusters and blows, colder and colder, and the man clings harder to his coat the colder it gets. Then it's the sun's turn, and he just shines, and in minutes, the man is taking off his coat.

Republican policies are the cold wind.

Reich is correct on all counts.

Bush's tenure will be remembered as the moment when the rich became so blinded by greed and by their obsession to own all the marbles that they forgot they needed to keep some of us poor slobs around to buy their Chinese-made junk.
