When I first heard I was shocked and at a loss as what to think but I came to believe quickly that I was a gutsy and necessary decision by Pat, the best owner in all sports.

There will be plenty of threads about current events but this is an interesting question. I can't remember this particular question being asked.

It felt like breaking up with a long time BF. You know you had good times, and it wasnt always bad...but its better you go your own ways and the next guy would be a better lay.

In a word...shock. It definitely came out of nowhere. There were no rumors or anything to suggest it. It just happened.

Disbelief. I heard the report, then had to verify it.

Then, absolute shock.

I thought, what a stupid thread. That's an offseason topic and we've got the Ravens tomorrow.

Oh wait. That's the answer to the question "what did you think when you saw this pointless thread?"

It's a ligament question, sorry you don't see that. Not trying to stur up anything. Just asking for an honest feeling about the biggest news in Bronco land that i can remember.

You should read the thread, your post is the only one that didn't honestly answer the question. I call sour grapes!

No offense Baja, but I have to agree with TJ on this one. You say you never saw any others ask this question, but there were about a million variant threads on this topic at the time and some predating it asking the question should he go. So it's a topic, much like the oft debated "who's a real fan" "wah wah I hate Jay Cutler." "Wah Wah, I hate McDaniels" that gets beaten repeatedly into the dirt with pointless threads.

But to answer the question so as not to be accused of avoidance, I was shocked and saddened he was let go, but I also thought it was good for him and for the team to change and move forward.

TJ in regards to your rep comment;

Shann'y record against the KC Chiefs;

1995 L 2

1996 split

1997 split

1998 W 2

1999 L 2

2000 L 2

2001 split

2002 W 2

2003 split

2004 split

2005 split

2006 split

2007 W 2

2008 split

When you consider how bad those post 2000 Chiefs were They had Shanny's number to win the number of games they did. Hell a lot of those years they could muster only 3 other wins.

First thought was complete shock, immediately after the SD loss I totally thought he could resign the next day. Then at the presser that night when he said Slowik was coming back, I remember calling Khan and we talked about how depressed we were for the next season. Once he was actually canned, after the inital shock - it was somewhat like when you have a breakup. A mix of the emotions from remembering the good times (Super Bowls) and the bad ones (everything after).

Initially quite a shock that Pat had finally had enough. Then after a small amount of time realizing that the debt from the Superbowl victories had finally been paid off - trying to think how long any other coach would have lasted under similar results without a SB victory.

I then realized what had been staring me in the face since the 2005 AFC championship game. Shanahan, the coach, could perform miracles with substandard talent. Just getting to the AFC championship game was quite an accomplishment because Pittsburgh showed me just how far our talent was from true SB winning quality. Some of those 8-8 teams were the most exasperating times I had ever had witnessed the way they folded down the stretch. Another clue.

Another realization was how much Shanahan, the general manager, was in denial of his ability to piece together a championship team. Mistake after mistake, in free agency and the draft. Shanahan, the coach, would not have tolerated that level of performance out of his coaching assistants. His performance in this area was inhibiting his performance as the coach.

I love Mike Shanahan as a leader of the football team. I tried to consider if Pat had overlooked an alternative to his outright firing as many had suggested on this forum. Pat had no alternative because the Shanahan EGO had grown so much that Mike himself could no longer step back from his situation and accurately evaluate his role in the success and failure of the team. This was evident by the fast cycle of DCs we were going through. It had become evident in the way Shanahan was dealing with the tough questions from the media about the teams performances. The post season press conferences were really pissing me off the last three years or so.

In some regard, it was a repeat of the final days of the Reeves regime. When Reeves went through the Elway/Maddox situation. He too demonstrated an inability to stand back and evaluate the situation accurately. His EGO had gotten in the way. After all, this team was Pat's, not Dan's (or Mike's).

Kinda funny, actually.... my friend Eric - 9ers fan - was talking **** about the Broncos, and I posted on his facebook "Shanahan has a talented offense and has the defense headed in the right direction."

I literally said something a couple days before like "He's not going anywhere."

I went to lunch or the bathroom or something, and came back, and he responded "Too late, the Broncos just canned him."

I didn't believe him at first, but checked, then I was shocked and maybe a little depressed.

BUT, when it came down to potential replacements, I thought that Raheem Morris or Josh McDaniels would have been the best choices... it eventually came down to Spagnuolo, Morris and McD, and I had my fingers crossed that it wouldn't be Spag... I was excited when they named McD.

I got a little pissed at the Cutler situation when it happened, but I felt that McD handled it like anyone, and Cutler was the one who had to be coddled. I didn't want him to go either, but in hindsight, I think everything worked out for the better.

In a word, surprised. I thought Shanny would coach one more year, and if we failed to make the playoffs again, I thought he'd resign from the position. He never got that chance, although I think we would have been far worse than 8-8 with Shanahan...
