Give me the top four from your perspective.

For me, you could put the Heat, Lakers, Bulls and Spurs in any order and argue it successfully. IMO, where the West really flexes its dominance as the better conference is in the next tier down.

OKC, Miami, LAL, Chicago. Bostons like San Antonio. If either of them get their acts together, the top 4 could change.

Maybe. But people have been saying this for around 10 years. You could make a case that, if the West really is/was that strong, then there should have been more than two teams from the west winning NBA titles. Take the Suns for example. It hasnt been uncommon for them to win 50-60 games but every year there's the same discussion about a lack of defense being a flaw. There are other west teams that have had this problem in varying degrees.

I think the only flaw in this logic, is that at the end of every year the two best teams in the league play. If the east only has one of the top four teams every year, but they beat the best team in the west, it doesn't disprove the theory that the west has more talent...it only shows that the best eastern team is better than the best western team.

So, you could have 3 of the top 4 in the west, but the 1 in the east is THE best.

But again, its not like its other teams besides the Spurs and Lakers that have won in the finals. In fact, there's only been one year where a team from the West in the final was a team besides SA or LAL.

And you could also say that SA and LAL have repeatedly won because theyre more balanced. The difference between SA and LAL and a lot of the other West teams has been an emphasis on defense (or an ability to play defense) which is something more typical of eatern teams.

Im not saying the West hasnt historically been better. It might have been. But there are some issues with saying this in absolute terms. It's hard to quantify if its even true.

Saying that the West isn't top-to-bottom better than the East is laughable.

Sub-.500 teams make the playoffs in the East.

Don't get me wrong here; the East is improving, players have gone East and it's on the rise. But it's not there yet.

Wins and losses aren't hard to back up.

True or false: A team that lost more than it won is an Eastern Conference playoff team.

Don't get me wrong; there have been years where the best team is out of the East, like Boston or Detroit. Heck, it may be true this year with Chicago. But top-to-bottom, the West is the better conference, and the wins prove it.

Not necessarily. The bottom of the conference could be more competitive with the mid-level teams. Ill point out that the Cavs had wins against Boston, Miami, and the LAL this year.

Also, Indiana has had a winning record since they replaced their head coach.

Speaking of cylinders. Allowing that tip in when it was obviously in the cylinder was brutal. If you're an NBA referee, you have to get a call right when its that obvious. Its not like this was a 50/50 charge call.

Well, the Nuggies got hosed on that call, no doubt, but I'm going to go back to a thing I said after the Laker and Maverick games a few weeks ago:

Well, huge win for the Nuggies. However, the last 3 minutes was a debacle, and that's the kind of thing that certainly is a concern, having the talent and experience to close out teams at the end of a tight ballgame. But hopefully that comes with time.

We need to learn how to close out games, period. The last couple minutes were garbage. And we need to get better at shooting FTs. We used to have 2 players who would get fouled a lot and they'd be automatic from the line. That's not the case anymore.

That is something that you guys will just have to suffer through. There just isnt alot of veteran leadership in key positions on that Nuggets team. There needs to be those guys out there to stabilize posessions...to make smart decisions.

If the Nuggets want to win this series, they're going to have to go about it in a couple of ways. They're going to have to ride hot scoring streaks to either comeback late or to blow OKC out. Getting in a posession-for-posession battle isnt something that plays to Denver's strengths.

Absolutely. We're not just going to gain an understanding of how to close out games overnight. This is going to be a learning experience for next year and so on.

Refs are going to blow calls, but the consensus in reading this is that the refs were just so terrible that Denver lost because of it. That's not the case.

Russell Westbrook seemed to be TRYING to give the Nuggs a break for about a three minute span with turnovers and terrible shots. Heck, if he doesnt turn the ball over with about 2:30 left, OKC potentially goes up by 10. Kendrick Perkins did not seem to show up in this game like in games past and I think that played a bigger role in the score than what is being mentioned here. Props to Karl for taking him out of his game...

Chris
04-18-2011, 09:46 AM
George Karl has never been a good playoff coach... so I'm not sure why the closing failures are surprising. That said, that bad tip in call changed the complexity of the game. The technical was BS. They really were pushing for OKC in this one. Given the NBA's fixing issues in the past... I think it's safe to suggest it as a possibility.

Anyways, on to game 2.

NBA statement:

"Kendrick Perkins was improperly credited with a basket that should have been ruled offensive basket interference with 1:05 remaining in last night's game. Although a player is permitted to touch the net while the ball is in the cylinder above the rim, Perkins also touched the ball while it was still in the cylinder, which is a violation and constitutes goaltending."

As a Nugs fan, yea that stinks. It's also on the team's shoulders not to miss 12 FTs - shooting just 63% from the FT line.

This is the first post I thought of after last night's game. Can't say I disagreed with you at the time, and I've said it myself. At least now I don't have to think back too far.

You're right, I've never watched NBA basketball since there has only been a team in OKC for 4 years, and the regular season means nothing...right on bro, my bad.

Listen, we had some calls our way, it sucks but it happens to every team. After you guys got rid of Melo and Billups and we got Perkins and Mohammed, you just don't match up as well with us. Thunder in 5...flame away

Luckily, your team has so many talented players that Big Bird can just slink up and down the floor and pass the ball to guys who arent afraid to touch it, and it doesnt really hamper what they can get accomplished.

Gasol gets by because he's on a team full of tough, strong basketball brutes. Some of whom are extremely mentally tough (Bryant, Artest, Fisher, Odom). He's able to be the one player who doesnt really have to throw elbows and dig to box out. He can just jump up and down and know that Artest and Bynum are doing the dirty work. That's why Gasol fits with LA.

Gasol as the #1 guy with Memphis? 0-16 in the playoffs.

An interesting train of thought for people who criticize the lakers (and honestly, I'm not talking about this thread...this subject had come up recently amongst some friends of mine) for being soft, lazy, uninterested, etc. This team has players that have played THE ENTIRE SEASON, all the way through the finals, three years in a row. Add in the fact that they play Olympic ball/summer ball in their respective countries, and its apparent that they don't have a lot of down time. Then, you look at the fact that they get every team's best shots night after night, and you begin to understand how special a possible threepeat becomes. I don't know if we have enough left in the tank this year, but it would be pretty cool to see.

Its what I hate about the playoffs. Get a great buildup for 3 days to this game, everyone swears up and down that it'll be a great game, and then the Nuggets just lay a giant turd on the court from the opening tipoff. Just total frustration. The type of game that should earn a Nuggets fan a medal if they managed to watch 3 quarters of that game.

So this is what I got figured for the rest of the series.

Nuggets will win Game 3, probably blow em out, OKC comes back and wins a tight contest in Game 4, and then closes us out in Game 5. It just looks like that kind of script that Nugget fans have seen too many ****in times.

However, if we manage to lose Game 3 I guaruntee that this series will be a sweep.

And it certainly doesn't follow that Perkins (2 points/5 rebounds) had anything to do with it.

By 14, at your place...however you would like to spin it.

The impact Perkins makes is not measured in points and rebounds, it allows Ibaka to play where he should be. The defensive intensity that the Thunder has now is night and day with what it was before he got here. Look at Ibaka's numbers since the trade...look at what the Thunder's record is since we got him...

better yet, look no further than Boston's championship series with you last year...with Perk and without him..

Smith isn't thrilled with the way he's being used by George Karl. [Smith] said there's a "strong possibility" he won't sign with the Nuggets this summer as a free agent, expressing frustration Thursday after the Nuggets went down 0-2 against Oklahoma City in the playoffs. "There's a strong possibility as of right now," Smith said. "It's not going the way I planned it to go. It's a tough situation. I want to be here, I love the fans and everything about the city. It's just maybe not my fit." The Nuggets had a team meeting on Thursday and Smith said the team didn't have "a pulse" as they regrouped at Pepsi Center. "Just frustration, just really didn't have any life in there," Smith said. "No one was really into it."

By 14, at your place...however you would like to spin it.

You were 1-2 on the season vs. the Lakers - no matter how you try to spin it.

The impact Perkins makes is not measured in points and rebounds, it allows Ibaka to play where he should be. The defensive intensity that the Thunder has now is night and day with what it was before he got here. Look at Ibaka's numbers since the trade...look at what the Thunder's record is since we got him...

Porkins' defense is vastly overrated. Kwame Brown is a better on ball post defender than Perkins. Howard, Zaza (very underrated BTW), Chandler, Bogut, Noah and Bynum are all better than Perkins as complete defenders. One thing I think everyone overlooks with Porkins is that he isn't a good rebounder and THAT is part of defense. He isn't a scrub on defense, but Nate Thurmond would have a hard time living up to Perkins inflated rep at this point.

You have to look no further than the series with the Nuggets to see what I mean. Nene is above his season averages and shooting a very high percentage against a bigger and stronger Perkins (with Ibake on the floor to boot). Last year against Orlando, Dwight's stats were well above his season averages against Perkins. He's a good defender, but not a shut-down defender or even one that changes the game much.

better yet, look no further than Boston's championship series with you last year...with Perk and without him..

Yep.

Our starting center played the entire series on one leg and we still won. Ha!

Lakers still not completely right. Great win tonight and for a lot of the game we saw why the are a threat 3peat. Gasol just needs to keep getting tougher. Still Lakers have a real shot to get this done. Kobe was great tonight. The plan of just letting Fish guard Paul, and then help him a lot was a good one. Let's Kobe go score like a madman.

Well, I know most people here are more focused on the Western Conference. The Bulls will be trying to wrap up its series against the Pacers. Its a series that has been marred by goonish play. Foster's two fouls were upgraded to flagrants, but since its after the fact, it cant really hurt Foster unless the series goes long enough to get two more flagrants. But hopefully, the upgrades will be enough of a calling out of the officials who did game three, that the officials in todays game wont allow such goonery and allow Indiana to stay in the game with cheap calls (or no calls).

Im interested to see how Boozer performs. He's really getting beaten up in the media for his subpar play. He has no lift and too many **** ups on defense. He really needs to do more if the Bulls are going to advance.

We're headed to Pepsi pretty soon. Nuggets don't have much of a shot to get back in it, but Afflalo is at least playing tonight, more likely through his hamstring injury rather than with a healed hammy. He's their best three point shooter, their best defender, and the glue that held the old to the new. The critical cog on this team.

The Nuggets could very well be 1-1, but they're not. They're 0-2 with an apology from the league. Thanks, David Stern.

Denver isn't sleepwalking. They just don't have the stars to hang in the playoffs. They have a bunch of B-level players that work well in the regular season.

They pissed away any playoff performance when they traded the only two stars on the team.

Really?

Who's the scorer? Who's stepping up?

Afflalo? He's injured.
Nene? He's not aggressive enough, and never will be.
Gallinari? He hasn't figured it out yet, and he's certainly not clutch.

Who were the two players that could hit shots at the end of games? Anthony and Billups.

It has more to do with this particular matchup. Westbrook is one of the few PGs that can keep up with Denvers pace for the vast majority of an entire game.

That's the one matchup Denver should be able to control. It's not about pace. It's about hitting shots, and Denver doesn't have the players now to hit shots.

The comparisons to the Knicks are, frankly, unintelligent. D'Antoni's pathetic system won't lend itself to winning. The combination of Karl's system, Anthony, Billups and the role players around them worked.

D'Antoni wants to run, and pick and roll and that's not Anthony's game. I would hope watching the Nuggets the last few years, people would know that, but apparently not, including D'Antoni.

This year, the Knicks traded away their depth to get Anthony. We'll see if they can build on that next year. Denver was almost there, and then Mini-Kroenke decided the best management team in the game wasn't good enough, so he decided to go with a scrub GM and pissed his best player off, and Denver is going out in four or five games.

And J.R. with another brick. Clutch.

Actually, is not as much about system as it is depth. Denver, by pushing tempo, can make a lot of teams play outside of their comfort zone since a lot of NBA teams are structured where the starters pace themselves. Westbrook is one of a couple of PGs in the league though who can endure and thrive at this pace.

Denver doesn't have the playmakers to get it done.

They really do not. While the Nuggets played excellent ball after the trade, the failure in the playoffs shouldn't be a shocker.

And the Heat should sweep tomorrow.

Nuggets are just always a joke when it comes to getting it done in the playoffs. Denver sports not in great shape for NFL and NBA. I don't follow hockey and baseball though how are those 2 teams doing?

The Nuggets were kind of doomed the second Karl made a big thing about the blown call in game 1. Everyone should make a big deal about that other than Karl. He's the leader of the team. When he did that, he made it OK to blame others for not overcoming adversity. When the coach makes a big stink over that like Karl did, guys start placing blame as a way of making excuses for losing in advance.

True, but at the same time, as people have been pointing out, they didn't get it done with Melo and Billups either. What choice did the Nuggets have? Melo wanted out.

Went toe-to-toe with the Lakers when everyone (including the coach) was healthy.

It all started unraveling when Mini-Kroenke decided to fire the best front office tandem in the game.

Late reaction but what is wrong with the Nuggets? I watched the regular season and they were solid, but now they look like 5 separate guys not a team. Making passes when the other guy is not ready or even looking. Turnovers and Free throws and where is the Coaching when you can see OKC starting to run away?

He was always friendly at Costco. Had some bright red shoes.

And he was the only knick who's brain hadn't already left for South Beach to party before halftime today. Make that before the game started.

I thought it was 7. Laker delusions runs deep. They take advantage of what their tradition, location, and value to the league give them, but may have a deeper hole than they usually see with Phil and Kobe leaving or losing their value at the same time.

So what, Carmelo and LeBrick signed extensions with their teams too. It means nothing. He may not be a Laker but there will be a lot of pressure for him to go to a bigger market.

RESTRICTED

Arron Afflalo- looks promising however; he did disappear after the 1st quarter last night. Other then that I would like to give him say a 3 year contract.

Wilson Chandler- He can go, he was hot when he 1st arrived and plays good D but it does not matter if you cannot do anything on the other end. Sometimes he cannot even hit the rim.

Gary Forbes- I can see something with this person, I would keep him sign him up.

UNRESTRICTED

Melvin Ely- Who?

Kenyon Martin- It's time to go in a new direction, I liked Kenyon but at times he tends to disappear in big moments not to mention he will want so big cash at his age.

Nene Hilario- the most fragile 7 footer I have ever watched. I think he just does not know how powerful he can be, he gets down on himself easily not to mention he likes to disappear as well.

J.R. Smith- he will give you a great half, then he will turn around and give you a crappy half, and it has been the same song and dance for a while. As a fan, I had it, good luck J.R.

As a fan, this is a big off-season for me. If we just continue to re-sign mediocre players and let good ones walk, and not sign anyone that will help this team, the Nuggets lost me.

Moreover, if superstar players continue to gang up with each other, NBA lost me as well.
