I trust Westbrook as a mover and a scorer, but not a qb or decision maker.

The guy is just a pup.

This is the infancy of his NBA career.

I really hope this ride continues to the Finals. These guys have such a cool chemistry and really play hard for each other. Despite the loss, the scene in Dallas with the 06 Finals was so damned much fun.

I dont know about that. Brooks has these guys achieving more and more, and its a young team. He's letting them all develop together, which is smart.

I like Brooks. I think that the Thunder players do too.

This team is a juggernaut. Its a streak-busting, dynasty-killing, monster.

They'll keep flying under the radar because the national media treats them like they're the background story for whichever team they're playing, but Dallas has been ridiculous in these playoffs.

Dallas is 11-3 (best playoff record in the league) against the toughest set of opponents in the playoffs. If they win game 5, they'll have surrendered only one game to the Lakers and Thunder combined. They'll have won every road game in LA and OKC, and won a closeout game on the road in Portland. Dallas is 5-2 on the road in the playoffs against the toughest schedule of anyone in the playoffs. Those are all extremely difficult places to win at.

Rulon Velvet Jones
05-24-2011, 06:43 AM
Obviously, I'd love to see them win it all. I'm just going to keep it tempered (or try) until that final buzzer nears. It's not that I don't have faith in this team. And the ghosts of years past don't bother me. It's that I respect the competition they may be facing. The East representative won't be a pushover.

Last night I had resigned to the fact that it was going to be 2-2. I almost turned off the TV seeing as to how I had to get up at 4am (and live on the east crappy coast). As a true fan I kept watching and was rewarded with less sleep and a fantastic finish.

Here's to another victory in game 5! Go Mavs!

- "Nowitzki" is German for "boner."

it was painfully obvious that the Thunder lack the experience that is needed to push through the playoffs. No slight to the Mavs, they have been to this rodeo before and it shows, but OKC, should have had these last two games.

Congrats to the Mavs...barring a miracle, you guys will be playing in the finals.

You know, why is it that Dirk doesn't garner the same amount, if not more, love than Kobe, Duncan, etc? I'm really surprised the guy doesn't even have his own shoes. I honestly think he's playing better this year than during his MVP year. Hopefully he can win it all this year and get a little more respect, because he damn well deserves it.

I believe it was early in overtime, the Thunder called a timeout and the camera was in front of the bench. That's when I knew this series was over. Just the look on their faces.

Also, just for fun, Kidd's 3 with 41 seconds to go was a travel.

The Mavs have been consistent in getting to the playoffs, but they always fail. Whether it's Dirlk's fault or not, they aren't getting it done and Dirk hasn't won a chip after all this time he's been in the league.

Maybe on the travel. Lord knows he does it all the time. But you know they rarely call traveling in the NBA unless it's egregious. Look at what LeBron gets away with.

The Thunder looked absolutely deflated. And who could blame them? Everyone in MavsLand thought it was in the bag up 15 with 5:00 to go. On the road, looking bad all night long against a fiery young team. Then the shoulders dropped, the faces looked sullen, the crowd was out of it, players and coaches were scrambling. It was a mess. If you had a chance to see Durant in the postgame presser, it was the entire night wrapped up in about :30. Just brutal.

Though they may be old, the Mavs are experienced and hungry. It's like coming into the Y all decked out in Jordan gear and dunking all over the place and having your butts whooped by the group of old guys wearing goggles and knee braces. Experience, on this level, matters a lot. I'm not slighting the Thunder at all in this series. They just may not be ready and they'll eventually learn that this will be a valuable learning tool for the future.*

*Assuming the Mavs win the series. 94% probability at this point.

Kobe gets the highlight reels, Duncan gets the consistency and the rings. I think many aren't familiar with what Dirk can do because they don't see him on Sportscenter highlights each night. If it's a January game in Milwaukee and he goes off for 32, it's barely going to get a sniff over a John Wall spin move or Griffin posterizing someone. He's not made for the highlight reels.

Dirk is white, he isn't American, doesn't sell alot of jerseys, hasn't been hyped by the NBA, and doesnt appear on highlight reels for some reason.

This isn't the first time Dirk has played like this. It happens every year.

The reason that the world is now in awe of all that is Dirk is because he obliterated the Lakers in a series that everyone watched. People tuned in and saw Dirk up close and personal.

There is no "new Dirk". This is the same Dirk that goes all the way back into the mid-2000's. People who don't care to watch him have been exposed to the greatness. Thats all this is.

Dirk is doing what nobody outside of Hakeem Olajuwon has done. Dirk is carrying a team as the lone star player. If Dirk wins a championship this season, its Dirk and Olajuwon on that list with nobody else. Not Jordan, not Bird, not Magic, not Russell.

LeBrick abandoned that because he thought it was too hard.

If Dirk wins the championship this season against a heavily-favored Heat team with 3 star players, LeBrick will never hear the end of it. At that point you'll never be able to argue that LeBrick is better than Dirk. Period.

ok....I can agree with this post to a certain degree. I have a bit of an issue with lumping Jordan into that first group, but thats entirely different argument

Here's the thing though. Lebron brough tthat Cavs team to the Finals that was way worse than this Mavs team. So until your 'ifs" pan out, its kind of just a conjectured argument

Also, what Rose has done for CHicago is pretty spectacular as well.

I do like the Olajuwon reference. The way they create their own shots, the difficulty level and the fact they they look damn near unblockable is amazing

Jordan had some pretty good players playing with him. I love Jordan as much as the next guy, but Jordan had some solid help. Pippen, Rodman, Kukoc, Grant, Kerr, Paxson, etc. Those were really good teams, and why they were transcendent was because Jordan was such a great big game player.

You're overrating Dirk's cast and underrating LeBrick's. The sentiment has changed because the Mavs have been dominant in these playoffs. But before the playoffs everyone wrote the Mavs off because it was Dirk and a bunch of guys way past their primes.

Heck, the Mavs' second-best player is Caron Butler and he's hurt!

Also, what Rose has done for CHicago is pretty spectacular as well.

Rose's team is pretty good too. Granted, he like Dirk, is the only star player on his team, but they have an excellent starting 5 and a solid bench.

Rose hasn't been up to Dirk's level in the playoffs though. Dirk has been legendary. Rose is still a pup. He'll be playing at Dirk's playoff level in a couple of seasons. It takes time.

Dirk will have an opportunity to slay the beast for the legions of fans around the world who loathe them and want them to lose.

Its the best possible scenario, IMO. The Heat have been given an unusual amount of media coverage. The Mavs will be moved into that hype machine. Albeit they'll be the support narrative for the fawning Heat coverage, they'll fall a little bit under that microscope. That will help people who dont really know much about Dirk to understand more about him.

People act like this is a new thing, but Dirk has obliterated some big names in the playoffs over his career. Its fitting that his first playoff upset and outburst came against Stockton and Malone. Dirk has since run over Bryant, Garnett, Duncan, Ginobili, Gasol, Nash, Stoudemire, Yao, McGrady, Webber, etc.

Dirk has been awesome in the playoffs for a long time. Look at his averages in the playoffs against his counterparts Duncan and Garnett. Crazy stuff.

Hahahaha. Dude, I'm a Cavs fan. The teams LeBron had his last two years in Cleveland were roughly infinity times better than that 2007 team that made the Finals. That team featured such superstars as Drew Gooden, Sasha Pavlovic, and the star of the www.heylarryhughespleasestoptakingsomanybadshots.c om. This Mavs team is more talented in every way, shape and form than the 2007 Cavaliers. Damon Jones was one of the Cavs' gems off the bench that year and he managed to play 12 straight minutes in one game of the Finals and not accumulate a single stat.

That team sucked. It go to the Finals because LeBron put them on his back against a declining Pistons team, and every other team in the East was either shot or rebuilding.

Thats it.

They don't yet have a feel for how to maximize their time down the stretch, and the Thunder went all deer-in-the-headlights when Dallas started challenging them. Dirk hit that three pointer and you could sense the tightness in the Thunder players start to increase. As Dirk hit basket after basket, the tightness increased with each shot. By the time the Thunder realized their backs were against the wall, they were shell shocked. So they just basically rolled over as the Mavs took what they wanted on both ends.

It was wild.

I actually said to my buddy that if they got it under 10 with two minutes that it would be close down the stretch. Sefalosha and Ibaka didn't want to shoot and Harden was on the bench. THey were just daring those two guys to beat them and keeping the ball out of Durant's hands. Westbrook shot on three straight possessions and you could tell he wasn't going to get it done

What they really needed was an offensive rebound...JUST ONE...to put that game on ice and they couldnt do it.

Again, that is something that will change with time. Whether they pick up a vet or two who aren't afraid of taking the big shots (like Kidd and Terry showed last night) or its one of the young guys growing up. THey've got plenty of time

Mike Miller will do what in the next series? Besides stand around, trying to cancel out Peja? The Heat front court weakness will be exposed by a line of Chandler, Haywood and a guy named Dirk. Barea, off the bench, will also have his way with the weak Miami depth. This is one of the highest scoring benches in the league, one that put up over 80 in the finale of the Lakers series. They have a number of guys that can go off on any given night and a coach that knows how to put his players in the right positions to succeed. You'll see offensive execution, not this mess the Bulls were rolling out.

Heat fans dont really know enough to discuss the game on that level. All they are is braggadocio and bandwagoneering.

When the Heat got going earlier in the year, they went on a 14-game win streak. Then Dallas went into their building and out executed them down the stretch in the fourth quarter (sound familiar?).

Miami is a great match up for Dallas. Miami's roster plays to Dallas' strengths.

The Mavs should have the edge in rebounding. The Mavs have a bevy of solid wing defenders who have a history of playing well against James.

The Heat do not have a single player who can make things difficult for Nowitzki. Haslem isnt quick enough and instead of having Mourning and Shaq back there in the post, they have soft Bosh.

Chicago is a more difficult match up for Dallas.

Anybody but the Heat.
If the Heat wins the championship, there will be more star players jumping ship and join forces elsewhere. That's bad for the fans, and bad for the game.

I still believe, had James stayed with the Cavs, that in a year or two, they would have been competing for a championship for years to come, ala Jordan when he was in Chicago...

What he said.

The Heat winning would set a bad precedent. ****ers just don't deserve it over guys that put in real blood, sweat and tears. F that.

That's what it might boil down to in the end. Dallas is a team built with several hungry players who were all loyal to franchises that came up just short of the prize.

Miami is a team of glamour boys who wanted to take the easy way out.

Miami fans will underestimate Dallas.

I'm hoping that Miami players will too, because they havent met a team like Dallas yet.

Miami won't be a pushover in the least. They do have some considerable matchup problems that can hopefully be edged out by depth and execution.

Don't forget fatigue.

I don't think Labron, Bosh and Wade can compete in the fourth quarter with Dirk, Terry, Chandler, etc if they are playing 40+ minutes every night.

Labron is averaging 44 minutes a night, Bosh and Wade 40.

One thing about Rick, the way he subs, his starters are ALWAYS rested to be fresh in the 4th. They rarely play the entire 4th quarter.

I was having fun last night. Mike has been injured all season and clearly the injury to his shooting hand(finger)has bothered him. He's look like complete **** out there, glad he finally put it together for 1 game. Mike Miller was finally hitting his shots last night and Spo would take him out. In the 4th quarter Spo should've went to him two minutes earlier and moved James to guard Rose. But, I can't complain too much because Spo finally made the change to the correct lineup at the end.
