So LeBron wasn't good last night? 29-10-5, 9 pts in the final 4+ minutes? And 3 of the 5 remaining games aren't in Miami? Anything else you need me to explain? Hate LeBron all you want, but at least be honest enough to recognize his performance. Interesting that you can't see that I acknowledged this in my post above:

What I see at the same time is people bashing LeBron/Miami when they lose and then lash out at the likes of Maven when they win. How about you ignore Maven and discuss the basketball game if he bothers you that much?

Mavs/Thunder tonight. This series is bittersweet for me because I'm an Okie at heart living in N. Texas. I pull for the Thunder because I always wanted a team in OKC, but I have been a Mavs fan since I moved to Texas in the late 1980's.

epicSocialism4tw
05-19-2011, 05:35 PM
Here are my keys to the game:

1. Mavs need to take care of the ball/transition defense. The Thunder have their biggest edge in the realm of transition offense. That's where they generate their momentum. Much like Dirk earlier in his career, that's where Durant hits his daggers. Thats where Westbrook excels. Thats where the young OKC players gain confidence.

2. Mavs' bench needs to continue their hot scoring. Led by Terry, this group needs to leave a positive tangible effect on the game when they come in. They shock-and-awe'd the Lakers. It has created a reputation for them around the league. A good start by this group would set the tone for the series and might have OKC players thinking about how tough it will be to overcome a Mavs team that comes at you in waves, and to plant some seeds of impending doom...a fated out.

3. Mavs' bigs need to exploit OKC. There will be many times when Dirk and Chandler will be on the floor with Ibaka and Collison. That match-up led to some big games for Chandler this season, including a 17/14 game that was Chandler's first statement game of the year. The Mavs can get OKC lost in pick 'n' rolls and that leaves Chandler able to capitalize on space with alley-oops and dunks as well as put-backs and offensive rebounds. This could be a coming out series for Chandler, where he makes a name for himself among common observers who havent seen what he has done over the season. He could average 12/12 and a couple blocks a game in this series.

Prediction:

Thunder 105
Mavs 101

Dallas' D could NOT rotate...that's more of how I expected the series to look. They came into this game holding teams in the 80s, but that's two games in a row over 100. Dirkalicious can't pull games out of his ass every night, and imo, the Thunder look much deeper. If it comes down to bench play (imo, because dirk and Durant will cancel each other out scoring wise) , advantage thunder. Just a better, more consistent supporting cast

Good game regardless.

What's this Thunder Up mess?

Good game by OKC. The bench came to play. They hit every big shot while only missing 7 shots. Mavs bench was flat and the defense was complacent. Haywood and Terry picked perfect times to throw up stinkers. Felt there was too much Stevenson. Mavs bench needs to get back on track.
Not sure what to make of the Westbrook benching. Sure, he's saying all the right things, but that had to sting. Brooks went with the hot hands and chemistry.
Mavs had won 7 in a row to this point. This series was never going to be easy. They're a good veteran team and will bounce back.

LeBron James embraces role of closer for Miami Heat

LeBron James has emerged as the Heat’s go-to guy late, and his fourth-quarter performances this postseason have been masterful.

jgoodman@MiamiHerald.com

In early March, with the Heat mired in the middle of a five-game losing streak, LeBron James addressed his team after a tough loss to the Chicago Bulls with an emotional apology.

Frustrated to tears, James shed his ego and opened up in the postgame locker room.

“I’m not going to continue to fail late in the games,” James said that night at AmericanAirlines Arena after an 87-86 loss March 6. “I put a lot of blame on myself tonight.”

With the Eastern Conference finals against the Bulls tied at a game apiece, James and the Heat return to AmericanAirlines Arena on Sunday for their first game at home against the Bulls since that crushing defeat.

Much has changed about James’ late-game performances. Relegated to being a well-paid decoy for the final month of the regular season, James has emerged again as the Heat’s primary late-game option and has been masterful in fourth-quarter victories this postseason.

James put away the Bulls in the fourth quarter Wednesday at United Center, getting nine of the Heat’s final 13 points.

His effort in Game 2 was similar to his crunch-time performance against the Celtics in Game 5 of the second round. In that game, he got the Heat’s final 10 points to end the Celtics’ season.

The execution James has displayed in the playoffs is a far cry from the state of mind he found himself in after the Heat’s loss to the Bulls in the regular season.

With his team trailing by a point, James had the ball with five seconds left. He drove left against Bulls center Joakim Noah with time expiring and attempted an awkward, off-balance layup that had no chance of going down.

“I keep failing them late in games, and I won’t continue to do that,” he said after the game.

He was right.

For the remainder of the regular season, it seemed the late-game honors James had always known throughout his career were handed off to Dwyane Wade, the Heat’s longtime closer of games. That turbulent time seems like a distant memory now, though. On Wednesday, with the game knotted in a defensive struggle, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was prepping James throughout the second half for the fourth quarter.

During every timeout, Spoelstra kept reminding his star forward to remain fresh for the game’s finish.

“The only thing I kept reminding him every timeout is, ‘You cannot afford to get tired,’ ” Spoelstra said.

During one timeout, Spoelstra told James, “For us to have a chance to win, we cannot have you fatigued.”

James played more than 45 minutes Wednesday, guarding multiple positions against a team that defeated the Heat by 21 points in the series opener. Conserving energy was not an option. He played every minute of the second half.

The Heat appeared physically drained in fourth quarter. Miami led by six points after three quarters but the Bulls, led by reserve Taj Gibson, mounted their comeback.

Gibson tied the score at 73 with a dunk. Meanwhile, the Heat started the fourth with just two points in the first 7:30.

Then, James tapped into his body’s reserves. He swished a three-pointer with 4:28 remaining.

“Early in the game, we didn’t want to settle for those outside threes,” James said. “It was there late [in Game 2] and [Mike] Bibby set a good screen for me. The shot was there, so I took it.”

James pushed the Heat’s lead to five with a midrange jumper. No apologies this time. James’ late-game offense tipped the series’ momentum in Miami’s favor.

“LeBron was really big down the stretch and hit the shots we needed,” Wade said. “He also guarded [Derrick Rose]. His three was really big. That’s why we put the ball in his hands. He’s going to make the big plays.”

Right. And when Durant is bodied and denied, then what's the result? You think Collison would get away with trying to play like that on LeBron on a bigger stage? Collison damn near fouls out in the other two games, trying to play the same way, and only collects 2 in long minutes tonight? That doesn't seem inconsistent to you? F it. Mavs win, regardless. OKC will be the ones worrying about the next game.

OKC shot 36 free throws to Dallas' 18. Seriously. Dudes were mugging Dirk the whole game and OKC got touch fouls called on the other end.

That's okay though. Dallas was up to the task of beating the refs and the Thunder tonight.

Of course its no coincidence that this wildly unbalanced officiating job comes after Cuban complained to the ref supervisor after game 2: http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nba/news/story?id=6569055

Cuban really does need to STFU.

Blame Cuban for overshadowing Nowitzki

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/nba-playoffs-dallas-mavericks-mark-cuban-always-overshadowed-dirk-nowitzki-051811

If you’re surprised by Dirk Nowitzki’s 48-point explosion and dominance of the postseason, blame Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

The story goes that Dean Smith was the only man who could hold Michael Jordan below 30 points. Well, history may rule that Cuban was the lone man preventing Nowitzki from taking his rightful place among the 25 greatest basketball players of all time.

Throughout the majority of Nowitzki’s brilliant career, Cuban has chosen to be the face of the Mavericks franchise. He publicly spars with the commissioner. At most games, Cuban sits a camera-pan-away from the Dallas bench. He’s a T-shirt-wearing, "Dancing-With-The-Stars"-appearing rock star billionaire. He’s a character, a media darling, a fun Daniel Snyder.

It’s not all bad. Actually, mostly it’s good. Cuban’s passion for the Mavericks turned the franchise from regular loser to perennial, regular-season winner.

There is a downside. Cuban’s uncontrolled paranoia and feud with David Stern are the primary reason the Mavericks have been postseason underachievers.

You remember “The Cuban Whistle Crisis?” Some people call it the 2006 NBA Finals featuring the Mavericks and the Miami Heat. Washington Post columnist Mike Wise gave the series its appropriate nickname, “TCWC.”

One-sided officiating repeatedly sent Dwyane Wade to the free-throw line and the Heat dug out of a 2-0 deficit to win the title. The popular narrative is that the heavy-handed, pro-Miami officiating was an outgrowth of Cuban’s wrestling match with Stern. Conspiracy theorists believe The Commish had the refs take out Cuban’s Mavericks.

I’ve long believed in an alternate theory, the hypothesis of self-fulfilling prophecy.

Cuban spent so much time and energy arguing and researching the theory the refs were screwing him that everyone in his organization — from head coach Avery Johnson to the ball boys — eventually got distracted and basically let the Finals officiating crews have their way.

Coaches preach that their players ignore things they can’t control. Cuban, from his seat close to the bench, forced the Mavs to do the opposite.

A dear friend of the media, Cuban has never been properly criticized for his role in “The Cuban Whistle Crisis.” When you think of the Mavs as a soft, underachieving team, you don’t think of Cuban’s culpability.

You blame Dirk Nowitzki. Or you blamed Dirk Nowitzki.

It’s a stereotype. Nowitzki is allegedly the soft, white European player not tough enough to take on the tatted-up American bad boys. Nowitzki is the reason the Mavs consistently exited the postseason early.

Really? I say it was Cuban.

The current playoffs should help you see the light.

Seemingly from out of nowhere, Nowitzki is being hailed as one of the best and most clutch postseason players in league history. In 114 playoff games, Dirk averages 25.8 points and 10.6 rebounds. Only Hakeem Olajuwon, Bob Pettit and Elgin Baylor can match Dirk’s 25-and-10 average.

What Dirk is doing is nothing new. It’s just too many of us couldn’t see it because too much attention was focused on Cuban’s latest controversy. These playoffs have brought Nowitzki into focus.

Now there’s consensus among talking heads and experts that he is the toughest matchup since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar unveiled the sky hook. Dallas coach Rick Carlisle is ready to put Dirk in the same sentence with Michael, Larry, Magic, Russell, Kareem, Wilt, Oscar, Dr. J, Shaq, Jerry West, Kobe, Tim Duncan and the rest of the immortals.

Carlisle is going a bit too far, but he isn’t crazy.

Give Dirk two titles and he’d crack my top 25. Give him three and I’d have to make room for him in my top 15.

Take away “The Cuban Whistle Crisis,” tone down Cuban’s paranoia, and Dirk is playing for his second title this year.

I’ve liked the Mavericks all season. This is, by far, the most complete team Nowitzki has played on. Tyson Chandler gives the Mavs a defensive presence and grittiness. Knockdown three-point bombers Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Peja Stojakovic and J.J. Barea make it impossible to aggressively double-team Nowitzki when he initiates offense from just off the block.

Carlisle is the perfect, quirky coach to work for Cuban. Carlisle is dumb enough and smart enough to ignore Cuban’s whining and tolerate his owner’s need to be the smartest guy in the arena.

The loss of Caron Butler is the only thing that momentarily shook my confidence in the Mavs.

Cuban built a championship-caliber team. As long as he can avoid distracting his team with crying about officiating and Stern, I see the Mavs winning the title. It won’t be easy. Oklahoma City is going to test Dallas. Kevin Durant answered Dirk’s efficient display with 40 points. And the Bulls would be a very difficult matchup in the Finals. (If the Heat advance, the Mavs would sweep Miami.)

I don't like that Dirk hovered so much in the high post tonight. It helps from being fronted but takes away his most effective spots, especially if Collison is going to be allowed to body him in space that much.

By the end of the game, Dirk had adapted.

I agree that its not his preferred spot, but he's good enough that he'll find a way to beat you anyway eventually. The key is that the Mavs' support players contribute and make the Thunder pay for paying Dirk so much attention. Dirk was literally triple teamed at times. The Thunder would rotate the guy from the weak side corner all the way under the basket to support the center so that the center could take away the baseline when Dirk turned. They committed 3 guys to guarding Dirk the whole game. Basically Dirk's man and the two other men on the baseline. I'm surprised that they didnt get called for any defensive 3-seconds, because that guy was camping in the lane on the weakside baseline.

Again, the key doesnt have anything to do with Dirk. It has to do with whether or not the Bareas, Marions, Terrys, Kidds, and Chandlers are playing good offensive basketball. You have to make them pay for loading up on Dirk. That's how it works.

Marion has had a good playoffs. He wants it this year and he's not intimidated by his role like he was in Phoenix.

It does drive you nuts when he misses layups. He also fumbles the ball sometimes, presses too hard in the open court and turns the ball over, and makes mindless passes sometimes. But his length, athleticism, his man and team defense, and his midrange game are killer.

Matrix plays almost like he's neurotic and hyperactive. It is great sometimes because of the explosion that it gives him in the rebounding game and in scoring around the basket, in the super anticipation instincts he has in the defensive sets, and the passing game (he's a fantastic passer at times). But it works against him in the open court sometimes because his brain gets tied in knots and he fumbles the ball or makes a stupid pass.

I dont know if you have noticed it, Rulon, but Westbrook is like Marion as a 2-guard. He has the same athletic explosiveness and it causes him to make some mistakes at times and miss easy shots too. He has the same blessing/curse where his quick-twitch response is so crazy-fast that it gets him into trouble sometimes.

Bigger stage??? It's the ****ing western conference finals dude. They realized how it looked after gift wrapping the majority of those 34 charity attempts through the first two games, and instead of giving into his floppiness, let some legitimate defense happen.

I can only imagine how loud your wailing would be had you guys lost tonight.

All I'm saying is, it's ok to admit when your star player gets dominated legitimately. It happens. Sometimes (and believe me, it's happened plenty to Kobe), you just get frustrated by tenacious defense.

The only saving grace, was that they finally stopped double teaming him consistently in the fourth because he was whiffing hard.

and btw @ drama...

"Money in the bank" in the 4th quarter? Sure, he had 10 points. If you call missing a couple big three's, turning it over 3 times, getting your shots blocked twice (once on a LAYUP, and as a 7 footer no less) inside of 15 feet, and looking tired as hell in transition "money in the bank", then he totally was. I swear you were watching a different game, because the dirk that was out there was old, tired, sloppy, and getting bailed out by Chandler on the boards.

Just keep sucking that schlong.

And PS I don't know what's funnier, the fact that it's Cuban's fault now, or that bobo the clown is your newest bandwagon-eer.

Speaking of Magic, I think after Dirk and the Mavs slammed the door shut on the Laker three-peat, that Magic has become the biggest Dirk fan in the world. Whenever he talks about Dirk, he smiles like a proud uncle. Maybe he has given up on your franchise too. Ha!

Hey Boob...what was that score again? Something like Mavs 4, Lakers 0...right?

I could have sworn that the Lakers didnt win a single game in that series against the Mavs.

I seem to remember you harping on some ridiculous idea that Gasol was somewhere in the same galaxy as Nowitzki too. Yeah, well...scoreboard. And...box score. I seem to remember Gasol melting into a puddle in the heat and pressure cooker that Bird...I mean Nowitzki...put him in. Gasol is Kiki Vandeweigh to Dirk's Larry Bird.

This will be a good offseason, won't it Boob? I can't wait to talk alot more about how the Mavs swept the Lakers out of the playoffs in the second round. Its going to be extra fun. Don't you agree? Hugs and kisses. x o x o

Remember how the Broncos won back to back SB's? And remember how blob always comes in here talking **** about how great the chiefs are, and the Broncos suck, and everyone laughs at him because his team is garbage, and we're back to back champs that had one of the best superbowl teams ever, and EVEN THOUGH they've beat us a few times, we still laugh because he's a bet welching fatty and our team is historically better... that kinda feeling?

Well, now you know how Laker fans feel when mavs fans come in talking ****. Except your team HASN'T won a championship. And bobo is actually more gracious in defeat. And your smack is ****ing weak sauce.

So I guess, technically, that's not a good example because the chiefs are actually winners by comparison.

Has Pau gone back to Spain yet to make a cry-nest in the embrace of Snuffaluffagus?

Dirk destroyed the Lakers so thoroughly that I wonder whats left of Pau. Not only did Dirk destroy him on offense, but he shut him down on the other end too. So sad.

I mean...getting jacked up by the Mavs over and over again and then getting waxed so thoroughly in game 4 that they mentally unraveled and basically gave up had to hurt bad deep down inside. Even Big Bird gets sad.

But hey man, now that the Lakers have been decimated by Dirk and the Mavs like a controlled demolition of an old building, you can always jump on another bandwagon. I hear that that Griffin kid is pretty good.

As far as Pau goes...I dunno what to tell you. It doesn't bother me, that's why I admitted to him being soft and underwhelming about 30 pages ago. You're SO much better than angryllama, don't succumb to the temptation of being his wingman. Not worth it.

Lastly, if you really want to talk about the best EVER that don't have rings...let's say.....top 25? You've got, what, 4 people, maybe 5? Elgin Baylor, Malone, Ewing, Iverson, Barkley? ALL of whom are better than that dirk. Not even CLOSE. But, none of them (outside of Elgin) are even top 10, so your point is moot. The best ever DO have rings, and they have multiples.

Yes, but in the mean time Durant had 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, and only 1 turnover. Nowitzki? 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 7 turnovers. There's really no comparing the two players' overall contribution. You're too focused on just one aspect of the game.

We focus on the fourth quarter in Dallas. Dirk was the guy who brought the game to a close by making the momentum-stopping baskets when the Thunder were trying to close their deficit.

On the other end, Durant was watching Westbrook make a mess of things. He was satisfied in taking a supplementary role.

Durant has alot to learn. He has yet to understand that he is the best player on his team and he needs to take that responsibility. Dirk was doing his thing on one end, and Westbrook was trying to close the game on the other.

Durant is what...21? He's probably still trying to be cool with his young teammates. When you get older, you realize that sometimes you have to be the guy to take responsibility. When you are best able to do so.

But the thing about Durant is, that there are still alot of holes in his game. He disappears at times, he's not a good defensive player, he doesn't have an adaptability to his game to where he can work himself into the game when he is not getting what he wants, he doesnt rebound well for his size, and he doesnt block shots well for his size. He doesn't drive the basketball as much as he should either.

Durant is young and will grow. His play reminds me an awful lot of the way that Nowitzki played when he was a pup.

For an 830 start on a Sunday night? Do you think you're trying to prove a point?

yea, the point i made about a 7pm game on a wednesday night, the gridlock traffic it took to get to the stadium dowtown, and the 2 hour ride i had compared to a sunday night at 830pm, that point.

But i guess your hate for the heat allows you to argue like a women and not make any sense.

you bash the fan base for not being thier on time for a 7pm game on a wednesday, and now discrediting the fact that the stadium didnt have an empty seat during this games tip off on a sunday at 830.

you know as a RESIDENT of miami, i might actually know how it works down here.

But continue with your hate for the heat, i know you still feel like mavs fans deserve a title more than miami fans

It's ok. Lots of defense. Ups and downs offensively. Bosh went on a tear. Rose still can't find a way to go off because of limits set by Miami's defense. Miami has had a couple runs, Chicago unable to retaliate or effectively recover. Pace started slowly but picked up over the course of the game.

Whoever thought they would "suck" is lost for the record.

I think you are confusing personal dislike some have for Lebron for thinking they think he is not a good player.

So far this round has went just like most rounds always go.

I always figure this is what has the best chance of happening between any teams in the playoffs.

Game 1 the home team normally stomps the other team and if the road team is going to steal one to me the best chance is always game 2...

Then it seems the home team for game 3 back at home always comes out pumped and kills the team with home court overall feeding off the crowd and whatnot. Then the best chance to steal one for the other team being game 4...

Games 2 and 4 to me are the biggies setting up what is normally the biggest game of the round , game 5.

But Maven anyone saying Lebron isn't a great player is just Fing with you cause it's funny to watch you go ape$hit , or they are lost and who cares...
But you need to mellow out a little about tonights game , they won a home playoff game and the 3rd one which about always goes to the host of that game...

And also stop taking the bait you are starting to be MVPlaya 2.0 and people are just using you to kill 20mins and entertain themselves . It's sad really.

Meh, he has to use the "us against the world" mentality for his own personal bandwagon motivation. It's pretty typical for the patented bandwagon behavior.

Reality is that media has always been in love with LeBron, and they definitely love Wade. Fans, they love winners, and no matter how much people will make LeBron a villain, it will only last this year, because people love winners and they love to be on the bandwagon.

Nobody, especially in mainstream media, ever "hated" on LeBron. Most predicted this, but don't let that get in the way of a good "us against the world" rant from bandwagoners like Maven.

I think Miami will probably win the entire thing because there's just too much talent on the team, but ugh, its just a bad mix from a basketball perspective. its incredible to see numerous offensive sets where Wade dribbles around a ton and then drives for a crappy shot while Lebron James, in my opinion the best player in the world, just hangs out on the wing, useless on the posession.

You didnt really see this on cleveland. I think they'd be absolutely unstoppable if Wade just played robin to Brons batman. Ego is a powerful thing.

I gotta disagree, throughout the post season, lebron has had the ball in his hands at the end of the game every time. That run to eliminate boston, the game being tied 73-73 to then have lebron go ape **** and finish the game 85-75, last night's game lebron has the ball and breaks a 6pt run by the bulls with a lay up.

BUt as far as wade taking a lesser role,Miami already tried this during the mid portion of the regular season, wade would sit back while lebron tried to pump fake and dribble his around a ton of defenders and take an even crappier shot. This was the same time miami went through that streak of losses and you know what they found out, wade is more clutch at those crappy acrobatic shots then lebron is. no doubt in my mind that wade is every bit as good as lebron, he plays amazing defense and is a monster scoring so he needs to have the ball in his hand just as much.

Go Heat !

Lol normally I'd agree, but Westbrook is a selfish pos that's playing like poop when it matters, and I don't think Harden (sp?) can pick up the slack when Durant can't get through the double team. Don't think they'll choke this one away

Yea that runner he tried near the end was sad ... Soon as he crossed the 3 point line I told my GF dude is totally not giving up the rock. Just like i figured he takes a crap low % shot.

And how they got such a bad shot at the end of regulation is silly.

its because Westbrook has no idea how to run any kind of a set offense

Thunder fans...

Don't let this one sting for too long. Dallas is a veteran team, and you guys have a decade coming up of some fantastic basketball. Durant will learn from this.

You could argue that this is the best thing that could happen to Durant. Its going to inspire him to put in the effort to, much like Nowitzki, round out his game and press hard after the prize.

I don't know what to say.

Incredible.

Magic Johnson:

"I'm changing my playoff MVP to Dirk. Woooooowwwwwww. I havent seen a stretch of play like this since the Jordan days."

I've seen a bunch of guys earn rep and contracts in the playoffs

not sure if I've ever seen a guy lower his stock this bad

Just unreal how he went from potentially being one of the top PGs in the NBA to suck.

We'll spare everyone the misery of posting countless Dirk pictures.

I trust Westbrook as a mover and a scorer, but not a qb or decision maker.

Dallas is only team past 15 seasons to win a playoff game trailing by 15+ points with 5 min. left in 4th quarter.
