Broncos' season could swing either way

Editor's note: NFL reporter Jeff Legwold analyzes the Broncos' 26-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday and looks ahead

The Broncos were not leaders of the pack when they arrived at work Monday morning, but they were at least squarely in the pack.

They opened a new week of football business as one of 13 NFL teams at 2-2, including the Dolphins, who lost Monday night. So, in essence, the Broncos are a quarter of the way through the season and things could go either way.

"It's good to get a win like we did," linebacker Robert Ayers said. "But we know it's only our second one. We've got a lot to do."

The Broncos certainly have an offense that could go either way as the league's top-rated passing team and as the league's worst running team. They have special teams that could go either way. Matt Prater is 8-for-8 on field-goal attempts, but the special teams have surrendered four returns of at least 46 yards, including a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown Sunday.

So, while 2-2 looks far better than a 1-3 start would, the Broncos still are in a wobbly area. It's a place where 2-2 can be just another step on the way up the ladder and into the area where the potential playoff teams fight it out at everyone else's expense — or the place where .500 turns out to be the high-water mark of the year.

The Broncos have a lot to do before they see which side of the equation they're on.

Key matchup

Denver's defense has rattled opposing quarterbacks in the team's two victories. Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck and Tennessee's Vince Young combined for two touchdown passes and three interceptions in those games.

In the Broncos' two losses, it has been another story. Indianapolis' Peyton Manning threw three TD passes, as did Jacksonville's David Garrard, while the Broncos intercepted neither of the two.

Next up is Baltimore's Joe Flacco. He is hot off a 4-of-4 showing in the final drive Sunday to lead the Ravens to a 17-14 victory at Pittsburgh in the game's final minute. He was unflappable against a Steelers defense that specializes in making quarterbacks quite flappable.

In the Ravens' 30-7 victory over the Broncos last season, Flacco, below, completed 20-of-25 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. The Ravens led only 13-7 with 9:46 to play in the third quarter before Flacco powered three scoring drives in the team's final four possessions.

The Broncos have to get Flacco unsettled in the pocket and make him force things. He has thrown more interceptions (six) than touchdown passes (five) this season.

Comparison shopping

After Sunday's games 22 running backs, including Cleveland's Peyton Hillis, a former Bronco, had rushed for more yards this season than the 220 yards the Broncos have as a team.

Very sad to see this statistic.
Equally sad to see some posters support this trade.

That might be a record

Do you really not see the difference between "supporting the trade" and "getting the **** over it"?

Would be nice to get through this three game stretch against the Colts, Titans, Ravens and Jets with a 2-2 record, thus a 3-3 record. The schedule seems to open up a little bit after that. It's still the NFL, and Denver will probably go 3-3 with division opponents, so then they are sitting at 6-6.

Other remaining games: San Francisco, St. Louis, Arizona and Houston. Win-loss record, 7-9, and three of those victories come from Houston. So definitely 9-7 is out there, and 10-6 or 11-5 is possible.

In the Broncos' two losses, it has been another story. Indianapolis' Peyton Manning threw three TD passes, as did Jacksonville's David Garrard, while the Broncos intercepted neither of the two.

Didn't Champ pick off Garrard on the first drive of the season?

Yes, it's true. We all voted on the O-mane, then Bowlen allowed the trade based on our wishes.

Hillis is gone, it's just over. Done. Forever. Let's just move on with the team we have and find a way to win.

I don't think anyone is "supporting" the trade.

People are trying to tell you they don't ****ing care, and are tired of hearing about it from trolls like you.

Yes, pining away for Hillis, who can't spell his own name, really accomplishes a lot.

go cry somewhere else. Supporting the team and McD does not necessarily encompass supporting all the trades and all the draft picks, etc. It's idgits like yourself that take a few moves and blow them out of proportion.
