I think it's like a cost savings thing. Doesn't get a game check then they can resign him Monday. The Steelers did it with Leftwich a couple weeks ago. Surprised the union hasn't tried to put the kibosh on that stuff.

According to PFT, it's more to make a spot for Ken Hamlin than the money in this case:

Ravens cut Trevor Pryce, but he could be returning
Posted by Mike Florio on September 29, 2010 10:15 AM ET
The Baltimore Ravens have dumped veteran defensive lineman Trevor Pryce.

Pryce, a 14-year veteran, appeared in each of the team's first three games. He joined the Ravens in 2006 after being cut by the Broncos, and Pryce started 16 games in his first year with the Ravens. He also started 16 games in 2008, and he appeared in all 16 games in 2009.

Per a league source, the Ravens made the move in order to create a roster spot for safety Ken Hamlin, who was cut earlier this month. Pryce could return to the team as soon as next week.

Because the move comes on a Wednesday, Pryce already will receive his game check for Week Four. Also, he'll be entitled to take the balance of his $2 million salary, if he so chooses. Pryce could even sign with a new team and take his termination pay from the Ravens, if he so chooses.

If the Ravens are indeed playing the 54-man roster trick by dumping Pryce and signing Hamlin, they apparently wanted to get Hamlin on board so that he could prepare for possible duty against the Steelers.

You've almost GOTTA bring him in for an interview, IMO. If he's amenable to a reasonable deal and still has his football legs and the fire, he'd upgrade the pass rush some.

Vic and Gary had Pryce's agent on this AM...this is accurate. They are making room for Hamlin for the week and intend to re-sign Pryce next week.

35 years old in human years...50 in NFL D-end years. He has zero sacks and zero tackles this year.

I guess he could help on the rotation. But the OLB opposite Ayers is the bigger issue.

Difference:

My Maroney was a Pat.

Pryce was a Bronco - a Shanahan Bronco at that.

Well wishes to Trevor in whatever. He was a good Bronco. It would be kewl to bring him back here, as all the other links to the Super Bowl years have retired. But, he was a Raven for a long time, and his departure was less than harmonious - albeit, Shanny is now gone. It would be a feel good story for a while, but in the end he would need to perform and one wonders at 35 if he still can.

Just stay away. If we go garbage picking again I hope it is for RB depth. Our D is what it is and we should go to war with what we have this year.

RB wise we have little depth and no quality, I hope they are scouring the Practice Squads for RB depth.

Maroney was NE's leading rusher 2 of the last 3 seasons ('07 & '09), missing most of the 3rd season ('08) due to injury. So I think him along with Buckhalter is better depth and quality than most give credit for behind Moreno. Our problem has been health more than depth and quality.

Maroney has something in common with Knowshon, the next time either one of them go over 1,000 yards in a season will be their 1st time.

Also Maroney's YPC has been dropping from his high water mark of 4.5 so you can't say it is just lack of touches.

I think Knowshon and Maroney are the same type of back, knowshon might be better out in space catching and making guys miss but neither of these guys are going to put up elite YPC or lead the league in rushing.

There's got to be a Hillis joke in here somewhere...

Defensive end Trevor Pryce said Hillis didn't just use his size to his advantage.
"He's a big back, but I don't think people understand that he's a fast back," Pryce said. "As big as he is, once you get 250pounds rolling fast, it's hard to stop that train. He was able to get a full head of steam, and once you get a full head of steam, he wins. And we didn't tackle very well. But we'll get it fixed."

Terrell Suggs: Trevor Pryce signed with Jets
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 30, 2010 11:09 AM ET
A day after he was released by the Baltimore Ravens in a move that appeared to be only temporary, defensive lineman Trevor Pryce may have left for the New York Jets.

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs wrote on Twitter that Pryce had signed with the Jets, and although there's been no formal announcement, the Ravens seem to think it's a done deal, as the team's Twitter account re-tweeted Suggs' tweet.

From the Jets' perspective, the move makes sense: Pryce played for Jets coach Rex Ryan for three seasons while Ryan was the Ravens' defensive coordinator. It won't take Pryce long to get up to speed in the Jets' defense.

Pryce can take his termination pay from the Ravens and still play and get paid for the rest of the season for the Jets.

UPDATE: Just after we clicked publish on this item, PFT was able to confirm that Pryce is, indeed, going to the Jets.
