From Halenbeck to the NFL gridiron
By Jacob Laxen • jlaxen@stcloudtimes.com • September 16, 2010

Tom Decker and John Carlson Sr. will be in the stands for an NFL game.

It’s a reunion the two are certainly looking forward to, though each will root for opposite teams.
That’s because the Carlsons and Deckers go way back.
Long before their identities to the world were defined as fathers to John Carlson and Eric Decker, John Carlson Sr. and Tom Decker were teammates on the St. Cloud State basketball team in 1975.
“I remember both of them looked like football players,” said Noel Olson, who was their head coach for the Huskies. “They were both very physically strong and both were so fast and quick.”
John Sr. played from 1975-1978. Tom — who, like his son, is a Rocori High School graduate — played from 1972-1975, and also was a football player for the Huskies as a tight end in 1972 and a defensive end in 1976.
“Those two guys were very good players,” said St. Cloud State head men’s basketball coach Kevin Schlagel, who played from 1972-76. Schlagel is also the godfather to John Jr. “They both played the forward position and they were two of better rebounders on the team.”
Schlagel’s right. Tom is sixth all-time in school history with an average of 7.9 rebounds per game and John Sr. is 19th all-time at 5.9.
But now life’s about the gridiron for John Sr. and Tom, who spend their time following their sons in the NFL.
John Jr.is his third year as a tight end for the Seattle Seahawks and Eric is a rookie wide receiver for the Denver Broncos.
And they are two of the NFL’s smartest players.
Both had the highest Wonderlic Test scores of their respective drafts — which is a 12-minute, 50-question test used to assess the aptitude of learning and problem-solving.
And both were one of 15 finalists in college for the Draddy Award, which honors athletic and academic success.
“That’s the Central Minnesota education base right there,” Tom said.
Added John Sr., who is a Litchfield High School teacher: “I think that shows a lot for them and the families they grew up in. It also says a lot about the school system in Minnesota and our emphasis on education.”

Is that Ed McCaffrey???

No no ... after thinking it over, Decker doesn't remind me of Eddie at all. He reminds me of Steve Watson.

Yes, a really DUM thing to say. If you said it, you know what would happen since you arent the most liked guy here. Luckily, you know better not to be insensitive. You have stated some DUMB things before, but never this bad. Now, how about that Foneco?

Seriously, stop the presses!
