View Full Version : Any thoughts on AJ Hawk?

I have to give credit to 80smith for the thought:

Hawk wants a trade he would be an instant upgrade to Haggan in the middle and it looks like he can play ST's which might prevent teams from starting on the 45 after every kickoff. I know our trade ammo is low and we don't have a RB to send with a pick but found it an intriguing prospect especially since Hunter was pulled off the scrap heap one week before the season started.

The agent for Packers ILB AJ Hawk told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that his client would be open to a trade.

"If some team called and wanted him to play on all three downs, I think he'd be excited about that," said agent Mike McCartney. McCartney did say Hawk's "first priority is to be the best Packer he can," but Hawk didn't even play a non-special teams snap in the opener. The Bills did just lose ILB Paul Posluszny, and Green Bay needs a running back. Unfortunately, Hawk's massive base salaries make a straight-up trade for Marshawn Lynch impossible.

If the Broncos are interested, and have something Greenbay wants...I suppose I'd be alright with it. But does AJ want to play in a 3-4?

Doom - Hawk - DJ - Ayers would be pretty nice. Would let us spend high picks on D-Line rather than an ILB too.

I'm not so sure he's that much of an improvement on Haggan. They seem like similar players, but Hawk would require trade compensation and, I don't know, 5 times what Haggan is making.

Yep, Haggan would be hardpressed to start anywhere else, Hawk would be a great upgrade and we will need his run support this year. Your right we could then focus on DL and OL depth next year with what picks we have left over.

I think it would come down to $ but I am sure they could make it work with what picks we have or a goofy 3 team deal.

Hawk is only in packages with 4 linebackers ...

He didn't play a down on defense on Sunday because GB only played nickel and dime packages that day.

:Broncos:

Packers linebacker Clay Matthews shook off his inactive preseason like he shook off Eagles blockers Sunday, leading the Green Bay defense during a superlative defense.

Matthews finished with two sacks, a forced fumble, and seven tackles, including the game-clinching stuff of Michael Vick.

"There's a lot of rust I need to shake off. It was a good way to start the season, let's just leave it at that," Mathews said after the game.

While the team's 2009 first-round pick built off his fabulous rookie season, the No. 5 overall pick didn't play a single snap on defense. A.J. Hawk only plays in Green Bay's base defense. Since the Packers played in their nickel or dime packages all day, Hawk only played on special teams.

Hawk's lack of a role on passing downs is nothing new. But it still says something when a guy making $4.6 million doesn't play a snap on defense all day.

It also says we should probably change our definition of what's a "base defense" in today's NFL.

Yes, Hawk is making 4 million this year... I think it's a 1 year contract too.

They could work out a long term deal for him, GB might be happy with a low to mid pick (if we have any left) that they could use to get a RB this year to replace Grant.

:Broncos:

I think he is much better in run support and not so good in coverage but Haggan isn't that great in coverage either. With Champ, Hill, Dawkins, Goodman I would rather have a run support ILB than a coverage guy, Plus hawk can get to the QB, Hagan has 3 sacks in a 7 year career and had his highest tackle total last year with 45, he only has 121 tackles in 7 years.

It is desperation time, the Hunter pickup and cuts on D 2 weeks ago prove it.

After seeing Haggan play MLB in 2008, I gave up on him being an effective ILB, but I do think he's a better choice at OLB than Ayers.

Hawk isn't on the trading block, but wants to be. I doubt he'd come to Denver since he wants to play WILB, DJ's position, not SILB.

SILB will be weakness for us this year, regardless if Haggan or Mays is playing. If the Broncos want to improve the position, the quick answers are Spencer Larsen or re-sign Johnny Willams to start. Not sure about our new P-Squad SILB signing.

Without the cap next year, I say we sign all the talent we can to evaluate for McD's eventual run. He'll put it all on the line with Tebow next year, so might as well spend our time wisely. Even if we manage 9-7 or even 10-6, this team isn't built for the playoffs yet, not with Doom out and our O-line is disarray.

It also says we should probably change our definition of what's a "base defense" in today's NFL.

Base defense is the philosophy that you run all your sub-packages like Nickel and Dime. IN Green Bay's case, they run nickel and Dime subs with 2 or 3 DL and usually 4 LB's still. In this case, they ran Nick Barnett and Brandon Chillar at the ILB spots all game over Hawk.

What is interesting is that Capers does not trust Hawk in his Sub pacakages! He did not have poor coverage skills coming out of OSU and that is why he WAS drafted in the top 5 unlike Maualuga coming out of USC. Hawk was viewed as a complete three Down ILB. It is also why you do NOT spend a top 5 pick on an inside LB in today's NFL. What a waste of talent to keep him off the field for a guy like Chillar, who is nothing special at all. He is a cover guy, but he is terrible at blitzing and can not get off blocks.

Really strange situation talent wise.
