Um, no. Like i said, it's not inconceivable that the Habs win this series. Is it likely? No. But when I saw the possibility of upset, this series stuck out mainly because of what Montreal did last year in the playoffs and Boston's history of gagging when the lights are bright. I don't need to retreat dude. I'll gladly stand by my prediction. I like Thomas (though i ain't gay for him like you, apparently) a lot but Price ain't a slouch and the B's are gonna give up a lot of shots--they're 2nd to last. If Thomas can't stand on his head, this will get intersting.

I don't see the Habs winning it but it is a big time rivalry series. Could go either way, but I like the Bruins defense and goaltending.

the best part about the playoffs, teams like the kings and pens that have 10 shoot out wins have to actually play the game to win, i think both are gone in the first round, unfortunately im not so sure philly isnt with them, rangers dont have a chance, nor do the ducks, its going to be a quiet NHL thread in 2 weeks when all our teams are out. LOL

I'd love to see us make it past Buffalo, but I just can't...not without Pronger.

I think we're F'ed.....hope I'm wrong.

worry not my friend, im still trying to get tickets to easter sundays game, i dont think it will get to the 6th game, but if it does i want to go, just cant justify 200 per ticket, specially since both kids want to go now, my daughter the pens fan, even agreed to wear a flyers jersey if i took her to the game.

kunitz is only a small step above matt cooke, hes a POS

Downie, now going by history, that hit should be at least 20 games cuz thats what he got for the first hit that was the exact same thing, but i dont think he deserved a suspension for that one either, and this time the guy got up so he might be ok.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HerZdQmigLs

im going to use both these hits next year, i had a kid on my team who everytime he got the puck would reverse play, and go behind the net with his head down, maybe these can scare that out of him.

Pens' Kunitz, Lightning's Downie face hearing over hits
Tuesday, April 19, 2011
By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

TAMPA, Fla. -- Chris Kunitz of the Penguins and Tampa Bay winger Steve Downie will have hearings with the NHL today because of hits they threw during the Penguins' 3-2 victory Monday night against the Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Seconds before Max Talbot scored the goal that put the Penguins in front, 1-0, at 5:46 of the opening period, Downie launched himself into defenseman Ben Lovejoy behind the Penguins net. He was was going to be sent off for that hit, but Talbot's goal got the penalty waved off.

Shortly after the midpoint of the opening period, Kunitz drove an elbow into the head of Lightning winger Simon Gagne and was assessed an elbowing minor.

Hey at least it's not a deal with Fox which did the gimmicky puck tracker sh*t. Ha!

It's a good deal for the NHL, Versus is going to rebrand itself into NBC Sports in the near future and the NHL will benefit from this partnership.

Depending on where you live, if your local team is on a different station, it wont be shown on Versus just in your media area. It happens with the Ducks here with the game on a local cable channel and Versus is blacked out. I personally like the coverage on Versus but it just doesnt reach the massive audience. Luckily, VS is near all the other "alternate" sports channels so any sports geek knows where to go for live sports' entertainment.

I hate VS!

I think their coverage sucks and I really hate it when they use funny camera angles. Especially when they show the goalie cam. That is great but I am not a goalie and very few of us are. How about we see the play and the net as someone on the ice sees it.

It gets worse when they show the shootouts that way. (obviously we will not have any of those in hockey playoffs) but still.

Also vs tries to pick which markets it shows the games. One night the avs were on and vs decided to put on the islanders game instead. So pissed. Also, if you all remember they showed the OT game of the Rangers game instead of jumping over to the start of the hawks vancouver game.

Well lets not crap on Versus completely here. Lets not forget where it started in the OLN days...THAT was some bad coverage of the NHL. Anyone that watched that first season under OLN was a ****ing joke. I was their biggest critic, but I actually think they have done a great job improving their product since then and make no mistake they are going to get better. They just need to hire Bill Clement and Gary Thorne, and dump the trash commentators they have now. I know that's a pipe dream, but least the Comcast Executives have shown a commitment to the NHL. 200 million is nothing to scoff at.

Again, keep in mind that Versus will be changed to NBC Sports Net within 90 days, and the executives at NBC/Comcast want to rival ESPN. They are serious about repackaging the channel into a sports network, and they will add on better content. They have already come so far since the OLN days. In those days they just had Tour De France, a couple hunting shows and that was it. Since then, they have added some College Football, UFC fights, Indycar racing. It will get better, and distribution will reach more homes in the near future.

Lets also not forget that the Olympic TV rights are owned by NBC/Comcast. NBC Sports Network is going to really benefit from that and will expand coverage in that area. I suspect NBC Sports Net will get a Sports desk show similar to SportsCenter. ESPN is up a creek right now with the NBA and NFL dealing with lockout issues.

i am a pens hater, but that dont change that what kunitz did has no place in the game, personally i have zero problem with downies hit, except that he got 20 games for the exact same hit earlier in his career, but this time because the guy got up he only gets a game.

The league can not rule by result, they need to rule on the action. Kunitz play served no purpose other than to injure, until the leagues bans a guy for a year for such actions they will continue.

I wonder why Mario isnt crying about head shots now tho.

Those VS commentators are waaaay better than the College football play by play and color analyst guys they had two seasons ago. Champ is correct. VS is turning into a serious sports channel and doing things correct from a few years ago. Maybe I am in the minority but it was either last year or year before (which I think it was) that I thought the playoff coverage was pretty good. If you have Versus, you should have NHL network too to give you your talking heads needs.

Ratings are up, league revenue is up, and Versus is now paying almost $123M more per season than the last deal. How is that not growth?

ESPN's coverage was ****. Unless you were a fan of about 6 teams, you only got to see your team play if they played one of those 6 teams, and the highlights were buried on Sportscenter.

The NHL is now going to be one of the new centerpieces of the NBC Sports Channel or whatever it is being called.

12-2 over the last two games (and counting). Even after game 4 I thought there was no way Vancouver could blow this, but the way the Hawks have walked all over them on their own ice...remembering the last two years (hell, the whole of Canucks history)...the mental edge has swung dramatically. Luongo needs to get his **** together fast if they don't want to make some ugly history here.

Man, Pens are 1 for 30 on the power play--2nd most opportunities in the playoffs. That's brutal. Tampa's 8 for 25. Not hard to see why we're going to game 7. Plus, Roloson was a beast last night.

It must be awesome for an athlete to throw up a one fingered salute at the crowd in Montreal. Sure it's not classy, or sportsmanlike...but it's funny.

Cripes! It looks like the Canucks are willing to blame everyone but themselves for the position they're in. If ever there were a franchise that the whole world was out to get it's clearly Vancouver. (If you listen to the team and their fan base that is.)

They're quick to point out the disparity in power plays...which is significant, but ignore the fact that they continually make the zebras look like dicks with their chronic diving. Refs are human...they don't want to be made fools of. They brought it on themselves.

It would be so beautiful...if the Blackhawks can chase Luongo out of his nets again. Unfortunately...the Canucks most likely have to get over some time.

Not meant to be but to give up a tying goal with barely anytime left and to cap it off a short handed one! Too bad they couldnt take that momentum into the OT period.

Whole thing reminded me eerily of the Olympic gold medal game, down to being played in the same arena. Heavily favored Canadian team with enormous pressure on it finds itself in a dogfight with a team that just won't go away, gives up dramatic tying goal in the dying moments of regulation, but escapes unspeakably disappointing their country by scoring in OT.

I still believe the Penguins are the best team in the league when they are at full strength. Hopefully next year we won't have all these issues.

On the bright side, I picked all the first round series correctly.

SoCal's Second Round picks

WEST
Vancouver 4-3 over Nashville
Detroit 4-3 over San Jose

EAST
Washington 4-2 over Tampa Bay
Philadelphia 4-3 over Boston

Tough break, but you guys fought to the end. Will you guys trade Malkin to LA? ;D

Seems like all the games are going 6-7 games. Detroit is going to be really well rested, I think highly possible they will steamroll right over San Jose in 5, Niemi has been really shakey in these playoffs. Vancouver will probably do the same with Nashville. Caps over Tampa in 6, and Chadta's Cryers will move on to the ECF in 6.

The last 3 seasons were completely summed up by Arnott saying after he was traded to the Caps that they have no clue to move without the puck. Anyone could coach that amount of talent to a Top 3 seed, so I don't care what that fat ****'s regular season record. The PP that led the league last year has been nonexistent this year and Backstrom has been invisible.

gtown

Boudreau has to get canned. The Caps have gotten by only on immense talent the last few years. Their positioning on D has been good, and the forwards now backcheck, but they have been absolutely clueless in the offensive zone.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Caps trade Green while they can get back value, and bring in a few more Canadians to round out a forwards group that is totally soft.

Hercules Rockefeller
05-03-2011, 06:42 PM
Herc what wholesale changes? Boudreau getting canned?

Boudreau has to go. They're just sloppy and in reality don't play as a team. They are supremely talented and they can beat anyone with what they have in the regular season, but they won't beat teams in the playoffs because it's a different game. Those teams know what they're getting coming in, and they'll make adjustments as the series goes on. It has nothing to do with effort that the team puts forth.

I didn't see the game tonight so I can't comment on it, but I do know they scored early and had it waved off because they had too many men on the ice on the PP. Laich took a puck in the face and two guys went on as he went off. Are you ****ing serious?

Game 2:

Goal 1: stupid high stick by Ovy, they're down a man and the defenseman screens Neuwirth on the goal

Goal 2: Either Backstrom or Semin have a chance to clear, they don't, Schultz can't knock anyone off the puck (sarcastically that's shocking), and it's an own goal off Green. Terribly unlucky on the bounce, but Vinny (I think that's who it was) was wide open. If the centering pass gets through, he has an open net anyway.

Goal 3: Lazy change, great breakout by the Lightning from their own zone, and it's a 2 on none.

They're still inconsistent, and it killss them in the playoffs. Just stupid stuff that will get you beat when it matters. Either Boudreau doesn't know how to fix it, or they've stopped listening. There was all the talk about the new defensive system, they went to that because they were getting lit up early in the season but couldn't match it offensively. I know when the season is over, it's going to come out that Ovy was hurt much worse than anyone ever let on.

Boudreau's had his chance, 4 seasons in the playoffs as a 3, 2, and 1 (x2), and they've won 2 series.

Hercules Rockefeller
05-03-2011, 06:46 PM
When the Caps decided to retain Boudreau after the playoffs last year, I felt the same way I did when CU decided to retain Hawkins for one more year- nothing was going to change, and all that did was delay the inevitable for one more year.

That's totally depressing going into a season knowing that you're not going to win it and nothing from the previous season is going to change. In the Caps case moreso than CU, because they have more than enough talent to win it.

gtown
05-03-2011, 06:55 PM
I didn't see the game tonight so I can't comment on it...

Tonights game sucked. Tampa got lucky on the GWG, but again the Caps offense sputtered. They dumped the puck all game, and then had terrible spacing. Two forwards would inevitably get caught up against the boards fighting for the puck and no one was ever cutting to the net. They were literally running into each other. I also thought that Boudreau would let the D pinch in more, but they played it conservatively all game. They gotta pop in some tape of the Flyers during the offseason, even though they are down two games as well. Flyers had 50+ shots on goal last night.

Actually, it looks like that long lay off hurt the Wings.

It may have, but the Sharks are basically the Wings with size. I don't think Detroit can point to any position on the ice (other than Lidstrom, maybe) where they have a clear advantage over the Sharks mirror. Niemi has outplayed Howard, Pavelski has outperformed Mule, and Thornton has played Dats to a draw. McClellan has outperformed Babcock, as well. SJ's penalty kill has outperformed Detroit's and their PP has outproduced Detroit's. SJ's composure and poise has exceeded Detroit's--the moronic penalties the Wings are taking are a function of that. Was it the lay off? I don't think so, as the rest should've helped guys like Franzen, who is a shell of his former self on that bum ankle.

Can Detroit still win the series? Definitely, but they will not win it because they are more skilled. They would win it because they grind it out and become opportunistic in their special teams. Hudler needs to sit and good faceoff guys/vets like drapes and modano need to get in there tonight.

karma is a not a wings fan when todd bertuzzi is on the roster.

karma isn't affecting them as much as being old and slow on the back end is. this team used to lock down 3rd period leads with ease, but no more. Against a team as big and fast as the Sharks, it's a certain loss unless they have a 3 goal pad going into the 3rd.

in an off-season that will demand some tough decisions, the first one has to be replacing coach McCrimmon. The defense and penalty kill has steadily eroded on his watch. the puck possession game the wings play starts with the first pass out of the defensive zone and this has steadily gotten worse under McCrimmon.

The better team won. The Wings left it all out on the ice, so the disappointment is/should be lessened somewhat. Losing 3 of their top 6 forwards--particularly the ones that matched up size-wise with the Sharks--hurt, for sure. Man, Boyle, Clowe, Pavelski, and Setoguchi are flat out sick and Thornton's a face off beast. Yeah it's official, even the Agents of the Thrasher players have been told to make new real estate plans. Predicted that would happen last week in a different thread on here. I knew it was more likely to be the Thrashers than the Coyotes. From what I understand, its primarily an arena issue in Atlanta. People that own the Phillips arena in Atlanta feel they can make more money hosting other events than having the Thrashers. It's a different situation in Phoenix where the City of Glendale is willing to put up money to cover any losses the franchise incurs.

It kinda sucks to see Atlanta fans having to deal with a second NHL team bolt for Canada. On the other hand, its good to see another Canadian city added to the league. It will be interesting to see how the Divisions shake out, though I assume Detroit moves to the East and I don't think the team will be called the Winnipeg Jets.

The woman's uncensored show of support seemed to be directed towards Sharks forward Ben Eager, who was sat in the penalty box during the third-period of Vancouver's 7-3 win on Wednesday night.

Eager didn't visibly react when the woman lifted her Canucks jersey and bared her flesh. However, the six-second display was picked up by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and shown across the country.

I do...crazy they're moving a team back up there. Just glad it wasn't the Yotes!

Not a yotes fan but just glad i'll be able to catch some NHL action live if i choose to...

City of Glendale isn't going to let the 'Yotes leave, they invested way too much in a new arena and are willing to offset any loss the franchise incurs. It's the complete opposite situation in Atlanta.

Now as for the naming business, the NHL owns the rights to the Jets name and logo. Now I am not ruling out or saying they will never be called the Jets, but I think the NHL will probably push Winnipeg to brand themselves differently. The Avalanche (Rockies), Sharks (Seals) were branded with a new name. Then again you have the Ottawa Senators, which got special permission from the family that hold the rights to the logo/name. I just think you will likely see a new logo and name in Winnipeg.

I always get a kick out of hearing the specials that they run in ****ty markets, you know, the 2 tickets, 2 pops, 2 hotdogs, 2 hats, a program and parking for 50 bucks. Up here in toronto they gave away a pair of tickets on the radio, face value 450 bucks.

Yeah but that is canadian money. What is that to us, $30? J/K I know it is an insane amount of money. I think our most expensive face value for actual seats are either $185 or $215 for glass. Personally, I like my Center Ice season tickets in the top section right below the press box for $16.50 (box office price is $43). Ducks have lost a few thousand per game the last couple of years but with the economy and a more baseball type area, it was bound to happen.

Damn.....cheapest Bs season tickets for last few rows of the back corners of the balcony is $25 (box office $49). Center ice? You're looking at around $50 for balcony depending on the row (box office around $80).

LA Kings named #1 in the organizational (prospects) rankings by HockeyFuture.

The Kings' boast an impressive blue line group featuring Derek Forbort, Slava Voynov, and Nic Deslauriers. Equally impressive is the team's group of centers, headlined by offensive talents Brayden Schenn and Andrei Loktionov. In net, Jonathan Bernier possesses top starter potential while Martin Jones and Jeff Zatkoff pushed each other with solid AHL seasons. Tyler Toffoli had a strong OHL campaign, giving the Kings the top talent on the wing that they have been sorely lacking.

Crosby to Start Summer Workout ProgramThursday, 06.02.2011 / 3:35 PM / Features By Sam Kasan
Share Penguins center Sidney Crosby met with Dr. Michael Collins of UPMC Tuesday and is starting his summer program of off-ice workouts. He will be joined by his long-time personal trainer for the next 2-3 weeks as he works back into his routine in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, according to Penguins general manager Ray Shero.

“I met with Sid Wednesday before he left for home and talked to Dr. Collins,” Shero said. “(Crosby) will resume his workouts and get back into his program in Cole Harbor.”

Collins is the UPMC specialist who has been monitoring Crosby's condition since he suffered a concussion in January.

Crosby, who spent the past three weeks on vacation, will not start on-ice workouts until late July or early August, which is his normal offseason workout schedule.

"Everything will be closely managed by Dr. Collins in terms of his progression leading up to him getting on the ice later in the summer per his usual routine,” Shero said.

Add the complete caving (a'la Colin Campbell) of Brendan Shanahan to Bettman by NOT suspending Burrows for at least one game (after Campbell suspends a player a month or two ago for 2 games). Ever attended a game here, Chadta? Attendance was not the issue. Ownership by an investment corporation was/is. They own Phillips Arena, the Hawks, and formerly the Thrashers. They've been steadily bleeding this team dry of talent since they took ownership. I was a 4 seat season ticket holder from day one, but the writing was on the wall after the sweep in the playoffs. Atlanta gets criticized for being a poor hockey town, but the truth is that most folks who live here are from somewhere else. Many of them from the Northeast and Midwest. There is a strong hockey base here. Our youth programs are booming, and our adult rec leagues are full up. I know as I have coached and played in both. Don't take my rant as a slight at our great neighbors to the North. I've got family outside of Canmore, Alberta. I am glad to see Winnipeg get a team back. Just pissed it was our team and at the way it went down. Can't stand Bettman or his greed.

I'm sure its tough for Boston fans to be satisfied where the series is at right now. They could very easily argue that this series should be a sweep at this point or at absolute worst 3-1, but they've gotta settle for 2-2. Vancouver winning 1-0 and then 3-2 in OT and then getting ****ing destroyed the next two games is not what I would call an even series.

Unless you factor in the Ice conditions. While I understand the concept of "home ice advantage" 80 degree temperatures at ice level are unacceptable. They keep complaining about the "HEAT WAVE!", I call BS. In 06' the Canadians were complaining about the ice conditions in Raleigh, and the NHL gave the Canes a very nice altimatum stating that if they couldn't control their facility, they could play their playoff games somewhere else. Of course the temperature at ice level at the time was in the low 70's. Just wait until the series goes back to Vancouver, Boston isn't going to know what hit them. The only reason they won the last two game so lopsided is because they nutralized the integirty of the game.

It's not 100% the Ice but it plays a big role. When is the last time you saw ice conditions that bad? The puck was bouncing 2 feet in the air on snap passes, there were puddles on the playing surface, thats unacceptable.

I watched Luongo early in his carieer when he was with the Panthers, and I know he can be a tool. I have no idea why people rave about him as much as they do. For years he was the most highly saught after failure in Florida because teams saw his "potential". Maybe I just saw the worst of him when the Canes swept the Panthers for 6 straight years at home, 4 of which featured Luongo.

From an overall team stand point Vancouver is at a major disadvantage with the ice conditions. They are a puck possession team who lives and dies by crisp passes, and limited turnovers. If you can't keep a puck from bouncing, you aren't going to win the game. If this was the Red Wings in the final there would be a lot more backlash. I think the Canucks just played themselves out of what little fan favor they had with Burrows biting incident, and Romes monster hit.

Crying? That wasn't crying sir, it was an assured jest at Boston sports as a whole. If you can't see how having chopy ice conditions plays into Bostons favor you must not be a very avid hockey fan. I could care less if Vancouver wins the cup or not, in all honesty I like more of the individual players on Boston. I have always been a supporter of Tim Thomas, Mark Recchi will always be a part of Carolina Hurricane lore, Dennis Sidenburg used to be a Cane and still should be (thanks for the slef imposed cap Mr. Rutheford), I've always had a ton of respect for Nathan Horton (I'm very disappointed hes out of the series), you don't have a heart if you can't get behind Zedeno Chara...You konw the only player on Boston I don't like is Lucic.

Wow, great series and great win by Boston. I am still in shock after last season that Bruins are raising the Cup tonight.

I might add that it was nice to see the ol Recchin ball go out a champion, once again.

There's a couple deserving players but I think Tim Thomas gets the Con Smythe trophy. Which would be a nice FU to Luongo who should have kept his trap shut prior to game 6.

It was always going to be Thomas if the Bruins won, hell even if they lost it could very well have been him, he carried that team to the finals.

Would love to see a guy like Marchand on the Avs. He was a revelation to me during these playoffs.

Haha. Called it in the last page. Losing two game 7s in the Cup final couldn't happen to a more deserving fan base.

Vancouver had a strong season all year long, even I'm in shock they didn't win, but I'm happy for the Bruins for having the cup in the States

In other words, Smiling spoke out of his ass and doesnt want to fully retreat on it. No way Bruins lose this series. They have the great American in goal.

Just wanted to bump this for some reason as I remember someone (now I know it is Smiling Assassin27) made the "I am gay for Thomas" line. Well, even a Ducks fan can appreciate the silver medalist and now a Stanley Cup Champion. Even better that it happened against the team that resides in the city that thoroughly enjoyed beating USA in the Finals in the Olympics.

Congrats Boston. Too many championships recently in all 4 sports to make the Red Sox fans even more obnoxious when they come to Anaheim.

WOW!

Just got home after making the rounds of the local establishments.

I'm not gonna lie. I've been balling my eyes out and hugged more guys in the last 4 hrs than I have in my whole life to this point and I don't care.

What a night. I love this team. The way they've played and worked together all season, but in the playoffs in particular. Unreal. I'll be sporting my #37 jersey for the next month at least.

THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!

Yup. Storybook ending for sure. I love how from day one he hasn't waivered or pretended in any way. This is THE perfect way to go out.

Fair enough. For posterity, let me reiterate that I like Thomas. The guy's absolutely deserving of the Conn-Smythe and worthy of your man love.

I said before the bruins flyers series that the winner would win the cup, why, becasue for three years in a row now a team from the winter classic has won the cup the following year, so next year its pissburg or washington. Im seriously thinking about putting $100 on each team like right now just for the hell of it.

That is funny, because it has not been my experience that Toronto lacks idiots of their own.
