3-2 loss for the USA. It will be a rematch for Sweden and Canada in the gold medal game tomorrow. Sweden had quite the team out there. Lots of big names playing for them.
I think Sweden's roster really says a lot about the state of hockey in the U.S. They had guys like Lidstrom...Forsberg...and Axelsson.
Where were guys like Tkachuk...Guerin...and Modano? Playing golf? Beside their pools?
Whatever.

Dude, you were like 5 years old when Forsberg was drafted, don't start this **** about how you knew all about him before we had any clue who he was and that he was some inspiration to you.
Easy there hoss...don't you know that not only did this kid know how great Forsberg was before the rest of us...but sometimes when he plays hockey he uses "Joe Thornton's curve" to facilitate his Joe Sakic like wrist shot. All of this and he's going to walk on at CSU too. Cut the kid some slack...he clearly has a lot on his plate.

European players grow up with a greater appreciation for international competition. Everything from the World Championships to the Spengler Cup (no, it's not named after Igon from Ghostbusters if you're wondering) to the Olympics. North American players are conditioned to value the NHL and the Stanley Cup above these international tournaments.
It's a cultural thing really, nothing wrong with either. It does discourage me, yet doesn't surprise me, that guys like Modano, Guerin & Tkachuk (who've all been playing golf and fishing for about 3 weeks now) don't feel inclined to represent their country in this tournament. I guess the only viable excuse they'll have is that they're saving it for the World Cup tournament later this summer.
Speaking of the World Cup this summer, if the U.S.A. is looking for a good defenseman who's quick and would be teriffic on the larger international ice surface, I hope they give John-Michael Liles a look. He's a teriffic youngster who I believe would thrive in that type on environment.....and he's 100% American! He hails from the great state of Indiana and graduated from Michigan State.
There's one other current player in the NHL who's from Indiana, I'll throw some rep to anyone who can tell me who it is.:)

Exactly what I was wondering, UM. Drury was there. There were a few other names I recognized, but barely.
Philly has a couple of the top U.S. forwards...but come on.
I'm a Modano fan, and I like Tkachuk. I hope their having off season surgeries, and aren't just shining this tourney on. It's thinking like that that is going to doom the NHL. It's a U.S. league with a canadian fan base. That won't work.
Was Brian Leetch there?
American hockey players are looking like mercenaries. No one takes as much abuse as Forsberg...and he's there.
I'm not a big fan...but I have a feeling that if Philly would have been bounced by Toronto...that J.R. would have gone.
There's very little pride in USA hockey unless it's an olympic year.

Is it football season yet?
SJ, it looks like the scrappy Flames are going to have to be outhustled on the blue lines if the Sharks are to win. The first game cleary set the tone for this series and I wouldn't be suprised to see quite a few penalty minutes given out to both teams... Speaking of which, what is your team's power play percentage in the playoffs? If they can boost it up during this series, they should walk away with this thing easily.

Grahame hacked Amonte not Primeau. That's the kind of sh!t that a player should just get up, rip the mask off the goalie and proceed to kick the snot out of them.
Plus, Koharski was standing right there and was looking right at it. I think, at that point he felt bad for the lightning. That dousche bag has to make that call regardless of the score. that's how games turn into war's.
As far as the game goes, we dominated exactly how we did in game one. The only difference besides the final score was the fact that the Flyers just threw the puck on net from every angle. Khbibuhlin has had a vacation the first 2 rounds. He has not been tested at all.
His GAA is misleading. His numbers will balloon by the end of this series.

Yet another game that we outplayed the Ning and came up short. My boy Esche is solely responsible for this loss. The first period was even in terms of who dominated but 2 REALLY soft goals let in by Esche cost us the game. The second period was like watching a pro team playing a junior team. The Flyers flat out dominated the Ning yet again. They beat the the "commey" 3 times only to have the puck ring off the post. They out chanced the Ning 9-3 in the second and the puck was constently in the Ning zone. The third period was pretty much like the first period. The Flyers started off on fire and Primeau finally found a way to hit twine behind the Commey instead of Iron.
Then, just a few seconds later, a blind pass from the Ning zone while the Flyers were all over them from ST Louis hit a cherrypicking Lacavierier and he went one on one with Esche. Why is Vinny cherrypicking when the flyers are domintating them deep in their zone? Reckless.
Oh well. we are down 2-1 in the series and have outplayed the Ning in all 3 games. It's obvious we are the better team but the better team doesn't always win.

Well, the first was pretty even, the second was owned by the Flyers and the third the Flyers started out on fire but the cherry pick goal broke their backs. After that goal, the Flyers dominated time of posession with the puck. Tampa played the "let's ice the puck every chance we get" game.

You're kidding right? The Ning started out with the jump no doubt but the Flyers were not dominated by any stretch. The 2 extremely weak goals killed us. But, the period was even.
BTW, does the Commey have naked pictures of Gary Thorne? Jesus, it wouldn't have surprised me if I saw Thorne run down on the ice and he pulled the Commey's c*ck out and started sucking it right then and there. Thorne needs to get his glasses fixed. He was so excited that the dumb schmuck was saying that the Commey made the greatest save he's ever seen and the Commey never touched it. It hit the post. I beleive the race is at 6 pm, but I want to get my bet in incase the Flyers the game goes into OT. I will then cash my winning ticket and walk back across the street to watch the Flyers win game 4.
Are you headed to the game dude?
I'll only have about an hour to find out so hopefully you read this in that time. LMK dude.
GO FLYERS!!!!!!!!!!
What a truely brilliant prediction phillynut. Unfortunately I don't live near Philly. I'm in New Mexico now. You might find it humorous as to how I became a Flyer fan. When I was a youngster I lived in Edmonton for about 4 or 5 years in the mid 80s. I tend to go against the grain so I quickly became a die hard Flyer fan. My first jersey I ever got was a Pelle Lindbergh jersey and I still have it to this day. I've managed to make it to several Flyer games throughout the years but I've never seen one in Philly unfortunately. In Esche we trust.

For some reason I thought you lived in South Jersey. Maybe that's another Flyer fan here.
That '87 cup finals was awesome. Hextall won the Conn Smythe as a rookie. He was phenomenal. J.J Daigneau with the game winning goal in game 6 sent the Spectrum into a frenzy. We all know how it turned out in game 7 but the Oilers were supposed to sweep us.
I want that Lindbergh jersey dude. He was the closest we've come to duplicating Bernie Parent. Anyone who saw him play would agree that he had all the tools to maybe be the greatest of all time. Sadly, we'll never know.
RIP Pelle!

wow, good for you.
its hard enough being a HOCKEY fan (im an avs fan), let alone of a team that far away.
heck, the new mexican doesnt even give complete box scores, and its not like the journal is much better!!

amazing to me, but i guess if theyve never watched hockey, how would they know the avs logo?
anyway, best of luck the rest of the way.
your boys seem to be dominating (whenever im able to watch), but its tough when it doesnt always translate into goals.

Go Flames! Damn, looked like our boys out there against the Sharks yesterday. Lots of eerie similarities.
This isn't meant as a knock against any of the 4 teams left in the playoffs or any that made it at all.
Clearly it's becoming apparent that NHL officials dictate the style of hockey that is to be played on a night to night basis. One night they want to see a wide open game of pond hockey...the next they want to see teams kick the piss out of each other.
Generally teams that can adjust to the way the game is being called come out on top. Calgary really can't do it. They got screwed over pretty good on sunday with some phantom penalty calls. They had guys sent to the box for penalties that aren't called in the preseason.
The officials dictate the pace of the play. If you get a crew that clamps down on the nonsense...then Philly is outmatched against tampa...the next night you get a crew that doesn't mind the Flyers battering the lightning in a romp...It's the same in the Western series.
In no other sport do the officials set the tone of a game like they do in the NHL...they're inconsistent and it sucks for everyone.
Every hockey fan knows what a penalty is...but NO hockey fan can grasp the logic that goes into one actually being called.

It's a joke that we are losing to this team. They have not scored an even strength goal in 130 consecutive minutes. Their PP is on fire and that is the only thing keeping them in this series.
Their last 6 goals have come on either an empty net or the PP.
They are a very average team at even strength. Their PP is deadly though and I guess it only matters what the final score is. Whatever.

Finally, some good news for the NHL.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/sportsbusiness/news/story?id=1804362
They get a TV deal done with NBC and ESPN. The ad revenue from the NBC deal will be shared amongst the teams, so there's a bit of financial relief (although how much it will be is anyone's guess).
Now if they can just hammer out that pesky Collective Bargaining Agreement, NBC & ESPN will actually have some games to broadcast.

See, and I don't believe in routing for anyone because of race, thats why I didn't realy want to bring it up, but it was a nice turn of hockey to bring the sport to a new demographic. Let me tell you something about inner city kids, we find a way. I played hockey thru donations from the city. Ever since the sharks got here in 92' lots of leauges sprung up. Give it time. Hockey is still young in the american poverty warm weather places. in about another 5-10 years, you'll see an influx of players of all sorts of races. Hell I know chinese kids that play right now.

Iginla would be a stud if he was lavender with pink polka dots.
He's had minimal talent around him for the majority of his career, yet he's been able to win the Pearson Award, Art Ross Trophy & 2 Rocket Richard Trophies (shared with Nash & Kovalchuk this year, but his name is on it twice).
He should have a Hart Trophy on his mantle but he got hosed out of the award in 2002 when it was handed to Jose Theodore. The argument was that Theodore got his team into the playoffs, but Iginla played in the much tougher Western Conference. Had Theodore and the Habs been in the West they wouldn't have qualified for the playoffs either. Iginla was the only player to hit 50 goals that year and kept the Flames in contention for a playoff spot in the tougher conference until the very end......he deserved to be the league MVP.
Regardless, the guy is amazing and he's also the first black man (African-Canadian if you please, I suppose) to be a team captain in the NHL. Now he's 4 wins away from hoisting the Stanley Cup. All that and he's only 27, yikes.

Esche looks very uncomfortable in there, even the saves he's making are looking shaky.
Vincent Lecavalier is becoming the player many thought he'd be.

He intentionally went after the bare hand of a Flyer w/out a glove...pissed me off

Philly has to be gripping pretty hard right now... 14 minutes left, down by 1. This has been a great series to watch. Too bad it has to end...

05-20-2004, 06:35 PM
Im a bit surprised. Usually with a lead in the third TB goes into a shell and it becomes a shooting gallery with torterella hoping Khabibulin can hold it off but they actually have limited Philly's chances in the third so far. Philly is starting to get some push now though, if they keep pinching though it could be a disaster.
SoCalBronco
05-20-2004, 06:38 PM
now its really becoming a shooting gallery. Can Khabibulin hold up for another 10 minutes?
SoCalBronco
05-20-2004, 06:48 PM
wow TB could have just finished them off there, they might end up regretting that.

Jesus, what a game. The night started out rough. We took the Subway in to the game because the Phillies were playing and the traffic would have been ungodly. Well, we get to the arena and my brother yells "PHUCK". I turned around and he was digging through his pockets. I nearly sh!t. He left the tix in the car. I was all over him. I said "DUDE, I ASKED YOU IF YOU HAD THE TICKETS BEFORE WE GOT ON THE SUB AND YOU SAID YEAH", "WTF MAN"!
He wanted to hope back on the subway and go back and get the tix. I said no way man, let's got to the ticket office and see if they can pull the tickets up on file since we had a playoff package and used a credit card to purchase them. Sure enough, they just printed out 2 tickets and we were in.
To the game. What an unbeleivable game. We dominate the 1st period. They kill us in the second outscoring us 3-1. I walked through the halls between periods and it was like I was attending a funeral with 20,000 people all dressed in the same shirt. But, once the Third period started the crowd was ELECTRIC! Loudest I have ever heard that arena. We flat out kill them in the 3rd and Primeau scores and unbeleivable goal with under 2 minutes to play. I've never seen so many people hugging at the same time. My Brother and I embraced for a good 20 seconds!
OT was NO different then the 3rd. We flat out killed them. It was like we were on a 20 minutes 5-3 power play.
BAM! Gagne scores with about the same time left in the period as Primeau did in the third. THAT PHUCKING PLACE WAS JUMPING! Oh god I got chills just thinking about 20k people dancing.
Primeau is having the best playoffs I have ever seen a player play in a Flyer uniform. that guy is just a flat out stud. Every time he touches the puck, something good happens.
On to game 7!
GO FLYERS!!!!!!!!!!!

good take philly that must have been quite an experience there.
Greatest Hockey game I have ever attended and I've been to roughly 150 hockey games.
They only one that could compare would be game 6 of the '87 Cup Finals when JJ Daignieau scored an OT gaol to send the series to a 7th game against the Oilers. But, I wasn't at that game.
It's a good thing We type our feelings on this board because I can't talk at this point.

Now that the Avalanche, Sharks, Flyers, and all the rest are gone and Calgary and Tampa Bay are playing for the Stanley Cup, I think this thread should be locked. I don't think there was one true Flames or Lightning fan in this thread while Colorado, San Jose, Philadelphia, and even Toronto fans all had to suffer heartbreaking losses.
For the rest of us that are interested in hockey still we can start a Stanley Cup Finals thread.
I'll be rooting for Tampa, since I was there in September for business and caught a few of their training camp practices. Plus I really don't care to see the Cup go back to Canada, let them suffer without it :boxing: .

Nah, we have a Flames fan here... and I've been pulling for Tampa all year - well since the broke into the #1 spot midway through the season. Its nice to see them succeed. LOL I probabally couldent give a **** about Tampa if they werent having a remarkable year. St. Louis was always one of my fav players.

Is it DenFan who has been rooting for CalgAVry? Hate to say it but this SCF hasn't been kind to any type of Orange Mane hockey booster this playoff season...
Now to see if the kid Kipper can stand in against the old vet. I was reminded tonight that at the beginning of the season I said I could see the last team standing as either the Devils or the Lightening just due to the veteran goalies. That being said I think some of the youngsters had a fabulous year (way beyond any expectations I had) and it looks like the NHL is going to have some netminders to keep things interesting. If we get a chance to watch them next season...

very nice sig line waffle. its hard to be a homer with brock at the helm i must say although he has improved in the spring. I was kinda hoping that Coker would rig the competition like he did last summer so that Kyle Wright would win the job. Ahh well, we will beat VT anyway this year, i think even you'd agree with that due to the losses you guys had and the fact that it is at the orange bowl. it all rides on the first game against FSU though. It will be interesting seeing UM v. F$U on Monday Night Football. I will be strongly rooting for you against USC.
