"With respect to the process between our organization and Jack Reale (Bailey's agent), we'd rather keep things private," Broncos general manager Brian Xanders said. "We acknowledge we're in talks."

Champ's always been a favorite of mine even before we were able to nab him. Would love nothing more than to see him play the rest of his (hopefully long) career in Denver.

He was fantastic in 06 as well. I remember the Cincy game where he absolutely shut down Johnson, and baited Palmer into throwing a pick to him. He was unbelievable that game, and that whole year. Glad they are working on an extension so we make sure Champ goes in the HOF as a Bronco.

It's kind of ironic Shanahan is the head coach of the team he stole Champ from and he is left with a nearly finished Portis.

Was that the same year he picked Brees off right at the beginning to the 3rd QT. here in Denver? We had been playing terrible all game, but that one pick 6 set the tone the rest of the game and season.

Charles Woodson got 5 years for 55 Million @ the age of 33, so I would assume that Champ deal will be slightly above Woodson.

Age and level of play are a factor, but Champ is the type of player you keep in the franchise.

bowtown

I'd think his deal would look something like this:

4 years - 36 mil - 14 mil guaranteed

Year 1 CB- 7.5 mil base
Year 2 CB- 7.5 mil base
Year 3 FS- 3.5 mil base
Year 4 FS- 3.5 mil base

I'm not sure I love this move. The 35 year old wall for CB's is almost as bad as the 30 year old wall for RBs. Champs going to have a monster year, and might just be the big winner of the CB derby this year, but just like Todd Helton's contract, age is catching up.

Meh, the difference in personality between Portis and Champ alone is enough to stick with Champ
All that Sheriff Jerome nonsense is pretty ridiculous when your team is missing the playoffs
Not to mention that at this point in their careers, you can probably stick a fork in Portis

When he was in Denver he was electric, but he was not built to be the workhorse that the Redskins made him into
Now if Portis had a competent big back to platoon with for goal line and 3rd and 1 situations, he would probably still have his legs

Requiem

I'm still a big supporter of Portis, but then and now the trade still makes sense in us acquiring Champ.

We didn't have a lock-down corner, and we've had one in Champ for the past seven years. I can't imagine where our defense would have been (even though our defenses have been average with him) without him.

Even with Portis being gone, we were able to replace him with other players who weren't as talented and still had the ability to do well. I'm not sure where we ranked in overall rushing each year post-Portis, but I'm assuming most years were still in the top ten.

Portis was special. In his 25 starts here he put up insane numbers. 2006 and 2009 were tough years for him in Washington. It'll be interesting to see what he can do with Shanahan again. In his career he has averaged 107 yards per offense per start. Pretty impressive.

Almost 12,000 total yards for scrimmage in 108 games with 78 touchdowns. He has a chance at doing some special things. Hope he continues to do well.

We know Champ is going to keep doing great things for us.

Good trade for both teams.

Yeah, well, that Sheriff gonna getcha thing was just a way to lighten it up from Coach Joe Gibbs. As you said, Portis was not built to be the workhorse that Coach Gibbs put him through. Those two years took 5 years off his NFL life. And the subsequent staffs and O-lines took 5 more years off his NFL life.

He should have stuck with Denver, and Shanny should have stuck with him, that's how I look at it.

The Portis trade was the right move and a no brainer IMO. I said that then and I still think that. Shanahan couldn't buy, bargain or steal a decent CB try as he might. But we could manufacture a RB game with our system. We came out way ahead for our needs.

It was about a TEAM need over a positional luxury. A luxury that would have been nice but not needed. We absolutely needed a top CB.

That's fine, we're arguing about a guy that DOES NOT give up TD's vs. a guy that SCORES TD's. That argument is gonna go on forever.

I say I would have really liked to see Portis, a Denver draftee, make the HOF as a Bronco. He had the potential to be an HOF'r, you could see that right away. I hated to see him traded away after two superb years.

I agree with your point on the trade. Portis was one of my favorite players, and wasn't happy he was being rumored in trades. I really wish there was a way we could have had both of them on the team. Though, it was pretty clear we needed to upgrade the CB positions because Manning tore us up and Delthea O'neal wasn't cutting it in Denver.

That being said. I'd take Champ Bailey any day over Portis. By the way, watch the first 8 seconds of this video very carefully...you can clearly see that Champ and Dwill (RIP) are communicating and making the call to switch. It was a critical call by Champ to make that led to the interception.

You notice the holes that Portis had to run through too...MmmmMMMmmmm. I bet he still dreams about seeing the back of Nalen and Hamilton's jersey's paving the way. It's to Bad we have yet to put a formidable front seven in front of Champ. Here's to hopping we land some amazing D-line talent in next years draft, and Doom comes back 100%.

Champ for the HOF

Portis...

I'm still a little mad at Champ for pulling up on the last five yards of that run. Should've been a touchdown.

What's funny is, I think that is the 1st season Josh started calling plays ( he said in his press conf. that the 1st he called was against Oakland in 2005).

Good thing I have a pop up blocker on this PC, I clicked that link and it sounded like a war broke out.

I can't believe people are still butthurt over Portis, especially since Champ was the return.

Evidently, USA Today stories come with a ton of pop up ads....

No biggie, I didn't need to see that again anyways

That was damn CLOSE to being a touchback.

Bailey was absolutely gassed at the end of the play.

WTF was Nick Ferguson doing?

Nick Ferguson was actually a good broadcaster with Alfred Williams a while back here on local Denver TV.
