View Full Version : Blasphemy and it causing injuries

So there's been a lot of jokes about Tebow's divinity. I can see why some would take offense to this as I am a religious man myself. However I have also noticed some weird suggestions. Mainly that in wrongfully suggesting that Tim Tebow is the son of God (really aren't we all God's children? I digress) God himself has chosen to smite this team with injuries.

I'm sorry, but are we being serious here? Let's assume for a moment that this is indeed blasphemy, and let's assume that God is so angry about this blaspheming (is that a verb?) that he wants to do something about it. Do you people really believe that to avenge himself and his good name against the various dorks (including myself) typing behind a computer that he smote Elvis' Pectoral muscle? You really believe that because someone online substituted Tebow's name for God's in "oh my Tebow" (By the way, "Oh, my God" is blasphemy in it's own right, hence the use of "gosh" as a substitute. Are we "gosh" users to be likewise smitten because of idolatry for falsely worshiping the idol of gosh instead of God?") that because of this name change, the Lord has chosen to part Moreno's hammy like the red sea?

I have my own beliefs, and I try and respect everyone's. However I find it difficult to believe that this idea of God punishing a player for something someone wrote on a message board is kosher in any religion. Mind you, I'm not advocating blasphemy here, and I am not saying God is or isn't pleased with Tebow worship. However I don't believe there are any grounds for this idea that doing so will cause bad luck and injuries to befall the players - other human beings who are not in any way connected to the issue.

Maybe a good starting point would be to think about how misplaced our focus is in thinking this. If we want the Broncos to win so badly that we believe he punishes us personally for our unrighteousness by causing harm to the team, isn't that a sign of idolatry? We're wrongly assuming that God's dealings with other people are conditioned on our personal sins, which does not in any way jive with the major religions of the world.

Or maybe more obviously, we're letting football become our new idol believing God cares as much about it as we do.

I think it's good to take a stand on defending God's name and asking everyone to be respectful of everyone's beliefs. But telling someone their sins are causing other people to get physically injured sounds more like voodoo than anything I will go hear on any given Sunday.

So please, stop saying that.

It's only the trolls and idiots getting uppity. Hopefully it'll make them go away.

I didn't think anybody was taking it seriously. Just one more in a long line of jokes that people refuse to lay to rest long after the thing turned to dust.

It's even worse than the Chuck Norris jokes.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Forgive us for our blasphemy. Amen

What was the excuse for 7 RB's on IR a few years back??? How about an average team for the past 5 seasons???

Forget it Kaylore.... if this was the case, the faiders would never have won a single game ever.

No, but the Abrahamic God gets pretty pissed off at people breaking his rules, ie Exodus 20:3 - he hates graven images.... just ask Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

What Kaylore is suggesting is that since football is what is important to those blaspheming the lord, that the lord taketh just as he giveth.

My perspective...God doesn't punish mankind anymore for sin or anything else. As the first picture Dagmar posted illustrates (minus the commentary), God placed judgment on Jesus who paid the price for sin. Tebow, nor anyone else for that matter, has any bearing.

Regardless of my belief, I think Tebow/religion comments and jokes are interesting. Good thing he isn't a Muslim. I think many posters on the Mane would have a bounty on their head. :)

Kaylore make a strong point, as far as blasphemy.

Mocking Tebow as Christ is clearly so.

No it doesn't matter to me, but it is clearly so.

Cutting ones hair has always had dep significance.

Generally, It's an act of submission/slavery/servitude.

It was also used on ships before outlawed, for you idiots.

My ex wifes father went thru it on the trip below the equator, they drag you under the hull of the ship on a rope,

VERY TRUE.

I was just bringing to light that your previous post was unwittingly talking about a US Navy ritual known as the Shellback Ceremony. It's "outlawed", but the brass generally looks the other way concerning it.

Most don't have a clue.

Most don't know the disgusting things we do.

It's called being Keelhauled, and it's usually fatal due to being ripped to shreds on the barnacles attached to the submerged portion of an oceangoing vessel. Besides, most Navy ships are quite large, and it's difficult to actually get a rope run under the bottom of a warship. So, I call BS. (And yes, I come from a Navy family. It just doesn't happen.)

Tebow could survive it, though. Or at least rise again after three days... ^5
