Reports: Brett Favre plans to retire
ESPN.com news services

Brett Favre has informed the Vikings that he will not return for another season in Minnesota, the Star-Tribune reported Tuesday.

Favre has sent text messages to teammates saying, "This is it," league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Neither Favre nor the Vikings have confirmed the news but a press release is expected Tuesday, the sources said.

The Associated Press also reported that Favre is saying that he's not returning this season.

The Vikings' ownership is holding its annual meeting at training camp Tuesday morning.

This would be the third retirement for Favre, who also retired after 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers after the 2007 season and one season with the New York Jets after the 2008 season.

Favre has been working out at his home in Hattiesburg, Miss., still rehabbing a surgically repaired ankle that was injured in Minnesota's overtime loss to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC title game. He has yet to inform the team if he will honor the second year of his contract and come back for another run at the Super Bowl.

Last year Favre told the Vikings he was not going to play shortly before camp opened. But he changed his mind a few weeks later, and went on to record one of the best seasons of his career despite having less than three weeks to prepare.

Favre threw for over 4,200 yards with 33 touchdowns and just seven interceptions to lead the Vikings (12-4) to the NFC North title and their first NFC title game since 2001.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

Either way it will be a suck off fest.

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress said Tuesday that QB Brett Favre has not informed him that he won't play in the 2010 season.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Fox Sports reported earlier Tuesday that Favre had informed the Vikings that he would not return for a 20th NFL season.

"This is a very fluid situation," said Childress, who added he had communicated with Favre within the past 24 hours.

The Vikings have to be the dumbest franchise in the NFL. They could have had McNabb but they were too scared to piss off Favre so they sat on their hands and let McNabb walk over to the Skins.

This franchise just amazes me on some of the moronic front office moves it makes (or does not make).

They could have drafted Clausen too. Yah, he's a douchey turd but when you hang your hat on Drama Queen Favre, you better have a plan B and a plan C.

Sad, actually. Right now I don't know who I am PO'ed at the most. Numbnuts clogging up the national sports media with his annual flip-flopping-drama-queen BS, or NFnL Network who were supposed to be airing NFL film's "NFL Yearbook:1969 Denver Broncos" (ie Floyd Little highlights). Instead we get the nonstop, Blah Blah Farve slurpfest ad nauseum once again this year. Ahole did the same thing to a re-airing of the '98 Bronco Superbowl team last year. Farve hate incoming , and yea I spelled it wrong . Until he either his family learns how to pronounce it how it's spelled or learns to spell , I'll spell it however I damn well please.

For starters all you people saying good things about this guy need to get their heads examined because this is in my eyes on of the worst people in the sport.

Hell Ricky Williams called , He said he wants his retire after the draft so the team is basically F'ed at that position and it's 6 weeks from the season bit back.

No one player has held nfl teams hostage as much as Brett Farve .
He is the ultimate ME before team guy.

And he is Fing overrated . One Super Bowl in 20 years and you're superman ?
I don't think so.

I mean the team he won with was LOADED with talent and had a great coach who kept Brett in check , change coaches and reduce the talent and he's been nothing but a stat compiler for the last 10 years.

All I have to say to Brett is enjoy comparing your ending over and over in your head to John's

Report: Family source says Favre has made no decision

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/03/report-family-source-says-favre-has-made-no-decision/

Posted by Mike Florio on August 3, 2010 4:45 PM ET

No development regarding the career of Brett Favre is official until the official Favre family scrivener, Al Jones of the Biloxi Sun-Herald, chimes in.

Jones reports, citing an unnamed family source, that no decision has been made by Favre regarding whether he'll retire for the third annual year.

"Brett has not made a commitment to play or a decision to return at this point," the source said.

So what in the hell is going on here?

Since Favre himself has remained silent, and since we believe the reports that he has advised team officials and teammates that he's retiring, this whole thing could be a power play aimed at getting more money for Favre or, more likely, getting the team off his ass about showing up for the third preseason game.

Indeed, we've got a feeling that the organization had been pressuring him to show up for the preseason home opener, and that Favre finally decided to make it known that he simply won't show up at all. By never acknowledging it himself, he'll never look like he was lying.

And so the end result will be more money for Favre and the ability to show up on the Friday before the first game, giving him six days to prepare to face the Saints on September 9.

Eh, nothing more than the attention whore getting antsy since he's being forgotten. Someone "leaks" he's retiring, then he comes out to say 'wait a minute' in his attempt to get people talking about him again.

My best memory of Favre and their fans was the media day leading to Superbowl 32. Was lucky enough to get behind the scenes that weekend in San Diego and Favre and all their fans thought they had it wrapped up. The arrogance he displayed that day was unbelievable.

My last Brett Favre memory will be "favre on the ground...favre on the ground..."

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BXZQyWlpARE&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BXZQyWlpARE&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

That's exactly what I remember about the SB also, the arrogance of the team, Favre in particular, and the fans. His media appearances made it all the more laughable after the SB and reality hit him. I sat through that game taking crap from before it started up until Mobley knocked that pass down, then our entire row mooned the Pack fans behind us. Not mature but, along with that SB win, extremely satisfying.

After last year and his 285 consecutive starts..he can take as long as he wants as far as i'm concerned!! Without Favre last year, the vikings would have been one and done in the first round and that's if they make the playoffs! With no Favre, the vikings don't win that game against the 9ers thats for sure..yea he threw a pick that pretty much ended it for the Vikes against NO but what about the dumb play calling and penalty at the end of that game that took them out of FG range??

I really don't get why everyone seems to hate Farve so much.

So he decided not to retire... 17 times.

You know what, I don't think he should have to give an answer before he's ready. Why should he retire if he doesn't want to!? Why can't he change his mind?

Did he put teams out? Maybe. But if they were so put out, they could have gone else where. No one held a gun to their head and said you cannot make plans for your team until you know exactly what Farve is doing. They wanted him. Teams always needed Farve more than he needed them.

Man is a legend in his own right.

Favre is a great QB in the same mold that George Blanda was a great QB; he remains a force at his position over many, many years. But, despite the eye-popping numbers, Favre has a major flaw; he has always been very careless with the football. The crucial, season-killing interceptions the man has thrown over the years almost stand out more than his positive achievements. Not entirely, but it seems the thing that always comes to mind with Favre is his season ending, bone-headed ints tossed in some frantic scramble toward the end of some critical game while trying to make a big play when a simple chain mover might've been the wiser decision.

Still an iconic player at his position when you consider the man is the Cal Ripkin of QB's in NFL history.

What he did to Green Bay was worse for sure.

No it wasnt. Green Bay was ready to move on. Favre won them a superbowl and brought them back to prominence after a mostly bad couple of decades.

LeBron WAS the Cavaliers and the only reason to watch and he did nothing for them except bounce for more money.

What LeBron did is far worse than what Favre has ever done to any of his teammates or fans.

Having the opportunity to see Blanda play QB in person, the similarity in the two QB's begins and ends with their grey hair. Favre is much more mobile at an advanced age. Favre is playing QB well at an advanced age, Blanda did only when Lamonica went down. Favre doesn't protect the ball, Blanda in spot duty was much more careful and limited in his abilities.
