View Full Version : Why T.Tebow is a bargin - Bradford Signs

The Rams reached agreement on Friday night with quarterback Sam Bradford on a six-year, $78 million contract that reportedly has $50 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports from Jay Glazer at FOX, and the Schefter/Mortensen bus buddies at ESPN. The deal has a max value of $86 million.

To put that number into context, Tebow's deal is 33 million, 8 million guaranteed and 11 million. 24% of the guaranteed money, 16% of the likely value, 40% of the maximum value.

How solid is the first QB in the draft versus the second? Here is the list since 2005:
Bradford, Stafford, Matt Ryan, Jamarcus Russel, Vince Young, Alex Smith,
Second QB Picked in those same years:
Tebow, Sanchez, Flacco, Quinn, Leinart, Rodgers

Now from where I sit, there is not a huge difference between the first list and the second list. If anything, the second list seems even more solid, then the first. Drafting a QB at all is extremely risky. If you are going to risk something, spending 33% of the maximum for a position that seems to have just as good odds for a QB seems like a great way to go.

There was a time when an OU QB playing the position in the NFL was as likely as SD wining a SB.

Bradford's payday is amazing and just one more reason for a rookie cap.....before NFL teams implode.

I can't make a new post, so It's goin here...

McDaniels gives Tebow grief for Jockey deal

Tim Tebow expected some jokes about his recent decision to become an underwear model, but he probably didn't think his coach would be the first to get on his case.

"I told him they passed me over for him. I turned it down," McDaniels said, via the Denver Post.

Tebow's response: "I just wondered if he was a boxer or a brief guy."

Interesting direction to take things, Tim. This is about to get awkward.

"It depends on the day," McDaniels said, when asked a brave followup.

Yeah, it's only a matter of time before we get another hearty postgame man hug from these two.

People are gonna start to talk crap now. They are just jealous of the Broncos sweet Bromance.

I know it's not really that big of a deal, but I spent like 7 minutes MSPainting this McD Jockey pic and I wanted to share.

This is out of ****ing control.

Completely. Last year #1 pick Stafford got an insane 41.7 million in guaranteed money on a six-year, $72 million deal.

And that's still 9 million less guaranteed than is what is apparently market value a year later for a QB who barely played his senior year (just enough to get seriously injured twice). What the **** is going on, and will they ever slow this train?

The NFL has to find a way to prevent top 10 NFL picks from automatically becoming among the top 10 best paid in the entire league at their position.

I could see the issue of rookie contracts being a divisive issue among the players. Vets are going to argue that they are paying too much to unproven players while vets are not getting the money they deserve for their play. Rooks are going to argue that many of them will be out of the league in 3-4 years and need every penny they can get their hands on.

Thats just not true.

He played 2 of his 3 NCAA seasons without a hitch, and in his injured season he was so eager to get back on the field that he pressed and came back too early. People said the same thing about Adrian Peterson.

Bradford will be fine.

Its good for him that he hasnt been hyped nearly as much as Suh, McCoy, Berry, and Tebow. He's a smart kid. He'll take it all in and by his third year he'll be one of the best players in the league.

the top picks are becoming a burden instead of a benefit

I know I wouldnt want Denver to pick in the top ten, I would seriously turn it down for a middle first round pick, the money tied up into one player like that who may not even pan out is counterproductive to the team

I knew it. I predicted McD and Tebow's in the closet relationship months ago after all the ball juice stuff Tebow had to say about his first meeting with McD. At first glance questioning whether or not his coach wears boxers or briefs seems REALLY gay, but then you realize Tebow already knows--his question was a clever smokescreen.

fair enough, I'm just saying that's a lot of guaranteed money for a guy with a history of having a shoulder problem. If he plays up to the contract than great, but the Rams are a bad team and it's more likely he'll get injured his first year the more he plays.

Hey I feel the same way about you, poster I've never seen or cared about before.

It's sad that gay jokes must be an elementary thing for you, as you could not see the pretense behind the ridicule of their behavior. There is nothing wrong if they are gay, for the record, I could care less, but the pretense of these complaints is there is a completely unfair relationship between coach and player here. McD obviously favors Tebow over others, and that's no way to be a leader or run a team. Another example of McD's immaturity when it comes to leading a team. He wants to be buddy buddy with the guys, and when they don't respect everything he says he throws a hissy fit.

A few things.

1. You are not as smart as you believe yourself to be.

2. You are not in Dove Valley. You have no idea how McDaniels is with any of the players, so you are creating assumptions that already fit your prejudices agains the HC.

3. Clearly you are in the closet and need to come out. May Tebow grant you peace.

Because you made it up. I don't remember if I posted it here or the other broncos message board, but the only thing I ever said about 09 was I thought we'd suck, but I'd never gloat in it as it would mean bad things for the team. That last comment was fired off at some ass around here, maybe you? I don't remember. The first comment seems pretty reasonable to me, even admitting I made a mistake in my assessment on McD.

Now after the second half of the season I don't know what to think, so I just go with my gut and he seems like a dick.

As for leaving and not being a fan, have whatever fantasy you want, I'll still watch and support the Broncos since my little breakdown on that day you quoted. I believe a few posts down I recant and apologize too, but of course you probably couldn't find that one. Post 66 fyi.

I like him, I think he was the best QB in this class, but I just can't see how he (or almost any rookie QB) is worth that investment. And those injuries were serious enough that we can't brush them off yet. I'd love to see him do well (always liked watching him play and how he carried himself at OU), but his contract is just another in a long line of obscene paydays for unproven players.

Thats just the state of sports today.

Vince Carter is slated to make 18 million next year. The amount of dollars guaranteed in NBA contracts is massive compared to NFL contracts.

It is unlikely that Tebow will be a suitable NFL starter at any point in Year 1. It is extremely difficult enough to do that as a rookie in general. However, he will make a very valuable niche for himself as a rookie, as a threat on the goalline with the QB sneak, the jump pass and other specially tailored Florida Gator like plays. I think the same would be true in the red zone. I know Josh tried to put the kibosh on the idea of a Tebow based Wildcat, but I'd still be surprised if that wasn't the case. It just makes too much sense to have him in that kind of format 3-4 times a game. In all, I think he'll probably have a hand in at least 5 TD's this year in some form or another.

Going forward, I believe he will in fact be the Broncos starter in Year 2. The sheer number of hours he's been willing to commit to the game so far (and he would presumably commit even more hours going forward, now that he's no longer bound by the NCAA's 20 hour week rule) suggests that he will be able to refine enough of the technical aspects of his game to be an NFL starter. This doesn't mean he'll be a Top 5-8 dropback passer, even with refinement. But given that a) he's working extremely hard LITERALLY non-stop, b) has good QB coaching from McDaniels whose turned lesser talented and rather ordinary guys like Cassel and Orton into halfway starters and c) he has a nice set of young, viable weapons (Moreno, Decker, Thomas and Royal) to get acquainted with, I think its not a homer position at all to say that Tebow could be say a Top 15 or so dropback passer and a Top 5 out of pocket passer/playmaking athlete in approximately 1-2 years from this point.

Thats interesting analysis.

I think that it will be important for Tebow to keep the interceptions at a minimum and his completion percentage as high as possible early on. That should be a goal of his and a focal point in his performance. That would help build a foundation for him of well executed mechanics. You build on that with the more difficult plays as he progresses. I think that this is what McD did with Orton last year.
