Wow...that is too young. RIP.

Bill Cowher's wife, Kaye, passes away at 54

Posted by Mike Florio on July 24, 2010 12:39 AM ET
We're stunned this evening to learn, via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that Kaye Cowher, the wife of former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, has died at the age of 54.

Per Bouchette, Kaye Cowher had been battling skin cancer. The duration of the condition isn't known; there had been no prior reports of any health issues, and no rumors that Mrs. Cowher had been ill.

Bill Cowher resigned as coach of the Steelers after the 2006 season, a year after the family purchased a home in North Carolina, Kaye Cowher's home state.

Pursued by the Browns and the Jets after the 2008 season and by the Bills last year, Cowher remains at the top of the "A" list for coaching vacancies.

The Cowhers have three daughters -- Megan, Lauren, and Lindsay. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cowher family.

Well, that explains why he was so adamant in retiring when he did. May God grant their family peace and strength to deal with the inevitable.

That's terrible. Thoughts and prayers out to his family. I just remember how happy he was after winning the super bowl, just looking for his family to share the moment.

Cancer does suck. My old friend even wore a shirt that said that til it finally claimed him.

On his death bed he told me this. "Steve remember this. You have to be alive to be inconvenienced". It completely disgusted him when people would complain about things around him when all he wanted was to be healthy.

Meck, I have the same shirt, whenever I wear it I think about my son and how much I miss him. I can understand your friends disgust, facing something like that puts things in perspective. We keep moving forward and fighting the fight. Hope Coach Cowher and his daughters are able to find some peace in all of this.

So sad to hear.

On a positive note, at least Bill got to spend the last 3 years with his wife without the "hassle" of 70+ hours per week coaching an NFL team!
