View Full Version : Post your real name

So do you guys think this site can stop all trolling if we were forced to post our real names? They are doing it on this gaming forum and a lot of people seem mad about it. I don't play WOW and don't know if I will try Starcraft 2 but I thought this could be a good discussion. People on other forums are all crying that this will cause a ton of problems and that a lot of stuff will start requiring something like this to post or talk online (games or forums).

My edit button is broke but this is the article:

Blizzard Will Require Real Names In Gamer Forums Posted by Antone Gonsalves on Thursday Jul 8th at 6:00am In another blow to web anonymity, Blizzard Entertainment, maker of the popular online game "World of Warcraft," says it will require players posting comments on the company's forums to use their real names. The change, announced Tuesday, will go into effect first for the forums connected to the highly anticipated "StarCraft II" game, which is set for release July 27. The same rule will apply to "World of Warcraft" forums, starting with community sites connected with the release of "Cataclysm," a WOW expansion set for release this year. In essence, Blizzard is ending the use of in-game character names on community sites. While those names can still be used, they will have to be accompanied by players' real names. Blizzard made the change in an attempt to remove the cloak players use in posting boorish comments. "The official forums have always been a great place to discuss the latest info on our games, offer ideas and suggestions, and share experiences with other players -- however, the forums have also earned a reputation as a place where flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild," the company said in a statement. "Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven't been connected before." Blizzard is only the latest organization to end anonymous postings on forums in order to bring more civility to public discussions. Newspapers, which once encouraged anonymous postings on comments pages, have been backpedaling in order to put a stop to offensive comments. For example, the News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., launched last November a registration-required policy for people who want to use its forums. Other newspapers revising their comments policies include The New York Times and The Washington Post, and American Journalism Review editor Rem Rieder has called for a general end to the practice of allowing anonymous comments. In addition, mean and offensive comments have led to lawsuits against newspapers and web companies, including Google, in an attempt to identify the person responsible.

This goes back to the Book by Jaron Lainer "You are not a gadget" He talks about people trolling others on the internet, how web 2.0 apps like Facebook/Twitter compact and reduce our lives into 140 characters and how the Hive mentality results in online attacks that people commit suicide over.

It boils down to the fact that people feel safe in their online world and if a poster gets pushed around in his real life he can lashout online and attack someone else to make him feel better. It is the classic bully syndrome.

I do think a lot of things wouldn't be said here if we were face to face which is why I like the idea of Tailgates and meeting people here. Your less likely to get into an argument with someone you have had a couple beers with and it is harder to be taken out of context in person. There will always be dickholes on the internets and in real life and we all have bad days which amplify into everything we do that day but if you have met the people on the board you will be less likely to troll them. This is why I stay here rather than go to another Bronco board.

I do think that drunken trolls who decide one day to pick a poster to troll because their life is sad and meaningless should be permabanned.

I think Posting your full name and where you live on sites where people troll is a bad idea.

This would be the upside to it. I don't think it would stop a lot of the trolling but it would stop a good chunk of it.

The other side of it is that people can find out a lot about you if they have your name and figure out your home town. The trolling could become trolling IRL as people look up addresses, phone numbers, and probably a lot of things I would never think of. Then there is the whole kids thing. Aren't you only making it easier for online predators when you force a bunch of kids to start also posting their real identities? The sites that these rules are being placed are sites that have a good amount of kids on them.

Either way, I wouldn't care much if we had to. I have a good chunk of my name in my user name. John S.

Funny because many of us know each other from the Mane. I have one friend on here who came out to see my band from the board and him and I know each others names now etc etc. Some of us don't hide behind a screen name. Everyone could go to my bands webpage, find out my name, hunt me down in Long Beach and shoot me during a sax solo!!!

I don't worry about things like that because life isn't about hiding and not letting people know who you are. At least not for me its not. This is me. I can be an asshole but also a pretty cool person who does a lot for others. I trust in Karma.

I got on there one day and they had all kinds of crap about me....one even had my middle name as one of my son's middle name. Scary, really scary.

Barn door was left open long ago on that one. The amount of information out there is scary, no doubt. I've seen sites that have every address I've lived at since high school, and your age is EASY to access. For free. Even more, they give you a Google Maps box showing the address ... a stalker's dream come true.

And for a small fee, you can instantly access, for any person, all licenses and accreditations they've ever held, full criminal record, civil dockets including marriage and divorce history including names and dates, and all real property they've ever purchased including the dates purchased and sold. And if you can navigate TRW Redi-Data, you can find assessed values for the property, size of the lot, and type, size, and square footage of improvements.

Couple of tips to avoid data-miners:

1) Never, ever, ever "register this product." All product guarantees are valid even without registration.
2) Establish a "John Doe" name as an additional "resident" at your address, and then do all mundane internet-type business in that name. Used to be easier to get a P.O. Box for that, but now UPS and FedEx won't deliver packages to P.O. Boxes, so do establish a "John Doe" alter-ego at your address.
3) Get a P.O. Box anyway. Have your credit card, mortgage, banking and bills sent there. There are privacy laws that apply to banks, utilities and credit cards, but there are ways around them. For example: If you respond to any flyer or ad mailed with your bill, that vendor may then access some of the information the bank has.

#2 is the most important tip, because most vendors on the Internet WILL SELL all your information to data-miners. That's how Taco makes his money here, he sells our info (I kid, I kid). But really, try to treat your name the way you treat you SSN.

Hey Buff....OT, but kind of related.

What's the best way to find out if a corporation has filed BK?

I have an 5 figure labor board claim against my former employer from last summer. (Who closed the doors last fall / winter)

He no-showed at the conference last month so they went ahead & set a hearing but told me that if they've filed BK that there is nothing more the labor board could do and that I'd have to try to get a piece of the BK proceedings.

I've googled it and stuff but come up empty. With all of the data that's out there, you'd think it would be an easy thing to determine for a small fee?

BroncoBuff
07-09-2010, 12:49 AM
State Departments of Corporations usually fall under "Secretary of State" jurisdiction.

Your profile doesn't say where you live, but most states have all that stuff online:

Colorado: http://www.sos.state.co.us/biz/BusinessEntityCriteriaExt.do
Washington: http://www.sos.wa.gov/corps/search.aspx

But that corporate data is of little use in your situation. I suggest you go to the Bankruptcy Court (I'll get you the address if you need it), and search for their case to see the outcome. All that info is public record. Problem is, if you have a claim against them, you should, or should have, filed a claim or exception with the BK court. Just like most of us you are smart in some things not so much in others

In my case it's spelling. ;D

In a few weeks my landscaping will be all low water, drought tolerant, etc etc. No grass at all except backyard a patch of about 15x20 for my dog. Lots of sago palms scattered and other stuff fed by little bubblers.

I cant wait to act better then my water guzzling neighbors.

I was thinking even fake solar panels would be pretty cool.

Wages get #1 priority, actually (after the IRS of course).

Cali....And I know for sure that the corporate license was suspended. It was the labor board chick who informed me of that. That's why she suggested I check. Was just hoping to find out on-line somehow & save a trip to the Fed building. Hope they haven't filed.

Thanks.

If it's Los Angeles, the court is at Alameda and Temple. Big tall red building called the Roybal Courthouse.

Info online is here, but you might PACER software for this site: http://www.cacb.uscourts.gov/cacb/Welcome.nsf/CM/ECF%20Mainpage?OpenPage

And BTW, you should have won some kind of determination with the labor board. Bankruptcies stay (stop) any suits or collections against the debtor, but the Labor Board is administrative, so their proceedings might be allowed to go ahead. If so, you should filed that determination or ruling along with your exception with the court.

Hercules Rockefeller or another attorney here might know more about BK law.

SoCalBronco practices a different kind of administrative law in California, shoot him a PM, he might point you in the right direction.

FWIW, I'm sorry about your situation, there's nothing worse than stiffing an employee for his labor.

No doubt. Screwed out of a large commission a few weeks after I quit. He'd been robbing Peter to pay Paul for a while & I guess it was too easy to collect that 100K contract and bone me since I was out of sight & mind. My employment agreement is rock solid though in regards to commissions earned prior to separation.

Mostly frustrating b/c this should've been settled 6 months ago but Cali is so back-logged that it took 8 months from when I filed just to get the initial conference.

The Community Manager got his face ****ing owned. He posted his name to prove how "safe" it was.

Everything from his family, down to his kid's school was uncovered in minutes. He's already disconnected his phone line, deleted his Facebook, and who knows what else.

Hilarious ****. Blizzard isn't Blizzard anymore. This is all Activision and Bobby Nodick at work.

LOL That is good stuff. It reminds me of that social security number protection guy that posted his social on commercials and then had a bunch of people get credit cards, IDs, and other random stuff in his name. I doubt it is much of a problem for most that post their name but when you do it and claim it is safe, people take it as a challenge.

Anyone else here date a girl named Anita Koch?

No, but when I lived on the east coast I built a couple of High rise condos and one of the buyers in the first building had a daughter named Anita. Their last name was Dick. I always wondered WTF that poor girl had to deal with while in School.;D

My uncle used to work with a guy that had the last name Dick. His first name was Harry and he had a brother named Moby. I didn't believe him when he told me and he showed me them in the Denver phone book. That was some years ago but they may still be there. How much do you have to hate your kids to name them that?

I'm not sure anyone cared about the story in the original post but they just said they aren't going to require real names now. They said there was a ton of negative feedback. I'm sure that guy getting owned after posting his name(the link UberBroncoMan posted) had something to do with it.
