MOBILE, Ala. -- Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested today for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

The substance was codeine syrup, spokeswoman Lori Myles said.

Myles said Russell was arrested at his home early this afternoon during an undercover investigation. He was booked into Mobile Metro Jail at 4:22 p.m. Russell was released minutes later after making $2,500 bail, according to online records.

Russell is scheduled to appear in court on July 20. A bond hearing is set for July 7.

Russell played high school football at Williamson High School in Mobile. He played quarterback for LSU from 2003 to 2006 and was the No. 1 draft pick for the Raiders in 2007.

Russell went 7-18 as a starting QB. The Raiders released Russell last May.

Curious what led to the undercover investigation of Jabba to begin with. Raiders initiated?

Can't believe they were just looking for drank.

I know it's fun to laugh and point fingers... as I already did... but seriously?

Something is either wrong/fishy with this story, or just shows how much money is actually being wasted by city officials.

Why would you have an UNDERCOVER investigation on a man with codeine syrup? In his HOME? Unless he's distributing it, which I highly doubt, this is a sad representation of city officials.

At a party, club, somewhere out and about, getting pulled over with it - sure that makes sense. But to pull an undercover investigation is ridiculous and odd.

There has got to be more to the story.

There has got to be more to the story.I'm sure they were hoping to get much more than codenine syrup. That's all they ended up with. I'm sure they get bad tips all the time, someone probably threw out the big guy's name to save his own throat. Just speculation.

Not enough facts out in the article. How much codeine did he have? Was it not in a Prescription bottle? ALMOST all prescription cough syrup contains codeine. This sucks, as it could end his NFL career.

How to make drank: Promethazine w/Codeine syrup, fruit flavored soda, and Jolly Rancher candies. The codeine is the euphoric and the Promethazine causes motor skill impairment, lethargy, and extreme drowsiness. If it doesn't have promethazine, it ain't real sizzurp. But its not like Jamarcus was on the stuff at work or anything....

Supposedly, a pint of it goes for $600 - $800 on the street.

I just looked in my closet, and I have what looks to be about two-and-a-half pints of it. Some of it expired in 2001. I wonder if that matters.

Now, I just need to decide what I buy with my newfound $2000!

Russell's arrest stems from 2-month investigation (http://www.nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/38113855)

Associated Press Sports
updated 1:00 p.m. PT, Tues., July 6, 2010
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -The arrest of JaMarcus Russell for alleged possession of codeine syrup resulted from a two-month undercover investigation that could result in more arrests.

Mobile County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Lori Myles said Tuesday that the investigation wasn't targeting the former Oakland Raiders quarterback but that his name and home address had come up several times.

The 2007 No. 1 draft choice was arrested Monday at his home and charged with possession of a controlled substance. Myles says forensic tests to determine the amount of codeine syrup involved sometimes take 5-7 days

Russell has a bond hearing Wednesday and his trial is scheduled for July 20.

Russell did not return a call from The Associated Press Tuesday. A business partner of Russell's agent said they had no comment.
