The Broncos added running back Kolby Smith from waivers. He was cut by the Chiefs on Monday. Smith is a fourth-year pro who’s played in 27 games for Kansas City, with nine starts. He was a fifth-round draft pick in 2007.

Smith’s addition likely means the Broncos will not add former Philadelphia running back Brian Westbrook, who had worked out with the team recently according to the Denver Post.

It definitely looks like we're going in the right direction to me! I predict a bright future for this team.

Close to my thinking. Despite the depth at CB, I think S. Thompson makes the team. Maybe Kirlew too. I don't think they traded a 5th round pick next year to just cut both of them and hope they can sign them to the PS.

based on most accounts ive read, these guys in most years would be roughly 5th-6th rounders in most years. if they dont make it, it happens, but to trade next years 5th for these guys was probably the right move especially if they have the talent of higher level guys in most drafts.

I've heard that as well, I'm really hoping they make the roster and contribute to be worth what was given up to them. Here are a few questions I'm considering to make up the team's 53-man roster:

1) How much stock do you put into a player you've drafted and/or spent a year developing?

Now we may already have the answer to this with Brandstater (a guy who was traded up for in the 2009 draft, then spent a year on the roster developing) being released. But consider you've got '09 draft picks who could be on the bubble in R.Quinn and McKinley as well as UDFA's you've spent a year in developing with Baker, Carter and Branson. Now consider you made a trade to get Kirlew and Thompson who play at positions you have depth at.

2) How do injuries impact the choices?

If Clady isn't ready to go, do you keep 9 lineman instead of 8? Or 10 instead of 9? Also, you've got guys in Decker, Reid and Hochstein who may not be ready and could be candidates for the PuP.

3) What is Stokley's status?

As pointed out in the thread, all logic says that an aging #4 WR who is high-priced and can't play special teams at a position that demands it of it's backups. However, Stokley just seems to be a McD guy, whose spoken highly about him often. He's a veteran, a leader and he's clutch. Plus the fact he missed a few practices and didn't take place in the "opportunity " practices leads me to believe he may know something we don't. It'll be interesting to watch.

Cute ... and classy.

Two rookies in the interior line, one on a position change, the other playing the cerebral C position ...

And two young tackles who are gimps right now.

D. Thomas I don't think contributes much this year. Without him, I see no clear, bonafide #1 receiver... I think he takes a couple years. Gaffney can't keep up what he did at the end of last season. We have a bunch of 2, 3 and 4 WR's.

I think our D will be solid to good ... but our offense sucked last year. This is - no doubt - a rebuilding year for the offense. They'll suck. But every year we'll get better.

Problem is, in 3 years we'll have a chance to be dominant on O, and our entire secondary and legit DLmen will be dead or in nursing homes.

Our entire draft next year should be DL.

Our OL was a joke last year. Yes injuries didn't help, but our OL was among the league's worst when it came to short yardage situations and getting stuffed.

This is pretty much in stark contrast to our previous ZBS which is designed to minimize negative run plays. For example, take Oakland who were running the ZBS last year and even with a completely ineffective passing game they were still a lot better running the ball on short yardage and preventing DLs from breaking the line of scrimmage.

I don't have a problem with moving from a ZBS to the new scheme as long as we're improving. But we didn't.

I have high hopes that this year we'll see an improved run blocking unit in McDaniels 2nd year otherwise this whole move was a wasted and costly experiment.
