View Full Version : Obama Gives a Speech.

Or, what if Obama gave a speech and nobody came? I guess, on the OM, that speech wasn't even worth a thread. I'm only putting one up because I was amazed at what a dismal effort it was. Every time I think the country needs Teddy Roosevelt, Obama comes up with another Calvin Coolidge effort.
And yet, basically what we got, in spades, was sentiment. To be sure, it was no doubt deeply felt. And for all anyone knows, there may be, already codified, a whole series of plans in the works related to stopping the oil gusher, cleaning the gulf coast, and implementing a new series of energy policies. And they may be great plans! But if you were hoping that some of that stuff would be revealed on actual teevee cameras, in prime time, well, you were S.O.L.

The truly ridiculous piece of the thing was the ending. Obama basically told us to pray. I mean, really. WTF?!
So that's the plan: pray like you were a bayou fisherman. Fantastic.
Obama should just go ahead and resign out of embarassment. He's not up for the job. So what? A man has to know his limitations. Palin quit to sell a book. Even that little dimwit realized she was in way over her head. Give Joe Biden a shot. At least then we'll get a little comedy.

My issue is simply if there were procedures in place to avoid the BP oil spill, why did it fail? It's the same argument that was used to justify why and how the previous administration should've been able to save New Orleans from a hurricane. It wasn't like they should've lasso'd the hurricane and moved it elsewhere but the people in place to plan and respond failed. If there had been nobody in position to regulate it then this would fall at the feet of those who had resisted regulation. As is though, this just shows that government regulation doesn't always suffice either.

Robert Reich had it right. This is what the president should have said:
Whether it's Wall Street or health insurers or oil companies, we are approaching a turning point. The top executives of powerful corporations are pursuing profits in ways that menace the nation. We have not seen the likes not since the late nineteenth century when the "robber barons" of finance, oil, and the giant trusts ran roughshod over America. Now, as then, they are using their wealth and influence to buy off legislators and intimidate the regions that depend on them for jobs. Now, as then, they are threatening the safety and security of our people.

That's such total bull****, Spidey. The right gave Bush hell on a lot of things, especially entitlement spending. Many disagreed on Iraq and were quite vocal about it.
The only reason the Left is criticizing Obama now is that even they know that speeches and photo ops aren't going to solve the problem. Obama turned down help from other countries who could have arrived in time to collect the spill before it got to the coastline but he elected not to because the oil workers from other countries weren't unionized.
Democrats know they elected a president who doesn't know how to run anything other than his mouth. He's doing for the Gulf what he's done for the economy - shake down people for money he can dole out as political favors while doing less than zero at actually fixing the problem.

You're oversimplifying just a tad here. The "procedures" failed at BP because they were cutting corners. Just as the Bush admin cut corners when they put an incompetent crony in charge of FEMA. Note that the Obama admin isn't directly responsible for BP cutting corners whereas the Bush admin is directly responsible for the incompetent crony. It was FEMA's job/responsibility to react and response to the Katrina disaster. It isn't/wasn't the government's job/responsibility to cap an oil spill caused by the negligence of a private enterprise. Has the Obama admin handled this perfectly? Far from it. But hard to compare directly to Katrina.

The Administration always has the authority to grant a waiver to the Jones Act in the case of national emergencies. Bush waived it during Katrina. My thought is that the Administration, despite being briefed by the Coast Guard, Ken Salazar, Bobby Jindal, and Thad Allen, didn't grasp or believe the magnitude of this incident and the potential damage. It flat out made a blunder in judgment.
Jindal was requesting sand berm barriers almost immediately, the Dutch offered to give them to him, and the Feds politely said no. The Dutch claim to have the capacity to get berms in place and finish clean up on this in 4 months. America could get it done in about 9 months. At any rate, time lost is coastline lost, and delays amplify the degree of damage. This Administration, like the one before it, froze like a deer in headlights when disaster hit the Gulf Coast.

This is also the result of the expanding of government, where people get in each other's way and eveybody seeking someone else's approval to do anything, while the emergency continues to get worse while everyone plays around with trying to figure out when the approvals stop and the action starts. Just like more and more jobs seem to need to hire more admin. to twiddle their thumbs and get in each other's way, but get bloated paychecks, while the ones who do the actual work get peanuts.

I like that we were able to get $20B escrowed from BP for the victims. That is $20B less out of federal cleanup efforts at least. Who knows how much it's going to end up at, though.
Smiling Assassin27

Then there's this. Around May 8, Louisiana requested that BP not be allowed to used dispersants below the surface of the water, specifically because much of the oil remains under water and puts the food chain at risk for contamination. BP still wanted to use them and 5 days later, the EPA let them. 55,000 gallons of this stuff is dumped into the Gulf, under the surface of the water. One week later, guess who changes its mind. Yup, the EPA. They told BP to stop using the dispersant, but the marine life was already put in jeopardy by BP.
Normally, with a natural disaster like Katrina, the state and localities are in charge. The Feds are there to provide what the state asks for in terms of technology and other support, and later, financial support. In this case, the well is drilled in Federal waters, making the Feds in charge, not Louisiana. This would explain why Louisiana's requests for boom, berms, and skimmers went ignored by this Administration, I guess. Google the National Oil And Hazardous Substances Contingency Plan Act and you'll see that Lisa Jackson is given authority in an incident like this. Where is she these days, shopping? Quoth the law:
the Federal government is required to direct all public and private response efforts for certain types of spill events
Then there's the flap about the boom left sitting in warehouses, that Thad Allen didn't even know about...
So it comes down to this: Either the Administration is stupidly naive or inexplicably incompetent. Either way, the result is the same.

Except BP today has committed itself publicly to putting $20B into an escrow account administered independently of BP - after coming out of a meeting with Obama.
What's hilarious is you and several others around here were slamming Obama for not calling BP's management on a daily basis, saying Obama is no leader. Now he meets with them, and even with almost zero negotiating power (as you just described) he wrests a $20 billion dollar committment out of them, you have a major problem with it.

Its becoming clear that Obama's lack of executive experience prior to becoming president has been a BIG problem. Its kind of sad to think that Sarah Palin may have actually been better prepared to deal with this than our president.
Language guru: Obama speech too 'professorial' for his target audience
(CNN) -- President Obama's speech on the gulf oil disaster may have gone over the heads of many in his audience, according to an analysis of the 18-minute talk released Wednesday.
Tuesday night's speech from the Oval Office of the White House was written to a 9.8 grade level, said Paul J.J. Payack, president of Global Language Monitor. The Austin, Texas-based company analyzes and catalogues trends in word usage and word choice and their impact on culture.
Though the president used slightly less than four sentences per paragraph, his 19.8 words per sentence "added some difficulty for his target audience," Payack said. He singled out this sentence from Obama as unfortunate: "That is why just after the rig sank, I assembled a team of our nation's best scientists and engineers to tackle this challenge -- a team led by Dr. Steven Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and our nation's secretary of energy."
"A little less professorial, less academic and more ordinary," Payack recommended. "That's the type of phraseology that makes you (appear) aloof and out of touch."
The monitor's chief word analyst found these three sentences insensitive: "Already, this oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced. And unlike an earthquake or a hurricane, it is not a single event that does its damage in a matter of minutes or days. The millions of gallons of oil that have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico are more like an epidemic, one that we will be fighting for months and even years."
"You shouldn't be saying that in Katrina land," said Payack, referring to the 2005 hurricane that devastated the Gulf Coast. "New Orleans lost a third of its population; it's still recovering."
But he praised Obama's phrase "oil began spewing" as active and graphic. At a micro level, the average word in the speech contained 4.5 letters, a bit longer than is typical for the former constitutional law professor, Payack said.
Obama's nearly 10th-grade-level rating was the highest of any of his major speeches and well above the Grade 7.4 of his 2008 "Yes, we can" victory speech, which many consider his best effort, Payack said.
"The scores indicate that this was not Obama at his best, especially when attempting to make an emotional connection to the American people," he added.

I dont agree with that analysis. I think that people are in fact more educated now then they were even in the 1990's. People are so familiar with the issues that they know exactly what he's talking about and what he's trying to do.

As usual the idiots can't see the difference. Bush said he was told by god to invade iraq. obama told you to pray.see the difference?
Yeah, when Obama sat in Rev "God DAMN America" Wright's church for 20 years. He prays for America's destruction and his plan is going swimmingly.

He's not the only liberal around here who has had to resort to make such threats because can't debate anything without resorting to that nonsense.
It's rather sad your typical liberal "man" is just an emotional drama queen who was emasculated years ago :thanku:

Well, I'm no longer in CO for the rest of the summer, but thanks for asking.
Having said that, I wish you no physical harm. I disagree with you, but I wouldn't ever threaten to fight someone over our differences. You go the other route I suppose...

Tried to get me? LOL you first said you would meet me in my favorite dive bar. Then you changed it and said I had to meet you half because you weren't delivering anything to Long Beach. LOL!!! What a joke you are.
I'm not scared of you Spider I think you are a joke.
What's funnier is you think you get all this mad respect and really it's the exact opposite. But it's not even a lack of respect, it's just that everyone knows you are full of it.

You have serious problems. Do you have any idea how insane it sounds to regular people to hear you say you wanted to fight because of a jacket? Get some help. Like I said I defend myself no problem. I don't take you seriously enough however to make any attempt to meet you. You're a freak and for the life of me I have no idea why this forum allows you to post.
Over a jacket. LOL didn't you just say you were old school? What school did you go to anyways.
