PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — An American armed with a pistol and a 40-inch sword was detained in northern Pakistan and told investigators he was on a solo mission to kill Osama bin Laden, a police officer said Tuesday.

The man was identified as 52-year-old Californian construction worker Gary Brooks Faulkner, said officer Mumtaz Ahmad Khan.

He was picked up in a forest in the Chitral region late on Sunday, he said.

"We initially laughed when he told us that he wanted to kill Osama bin Laden," said Khan. But he said when officers seized the pistol, the sword and night-vision equipment, "our suspicion grew."

He was questioned Tuesday by intelligence officials in Peshawar, the main northwestern city.

Faulkner told police he visited Pakistan seven times, and this was his third trip to Chitral.

Police alleged the American intended to travel to the eastern Afghan region of Nuristan, just across the border from Chitral.

The area is among several rumored hiding places for the al-Qaeda leader, who has evaded a massive U.S. effort to capture him since 2001. Bin Laden is accused of being behind the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, as well other terrorist acts.

Khan said Faulkner was also carrying a book containing Christian verses and teachings.

When asked why he thought he had a chance of tracing bin Laden, Faulkner replied, "God is with me, and I am confident I will be successful in killing him," said Khan.

Faulkner arrived in the Chitrali town of Bumburate on June 3 and stayed in a hotel there.

oh man if you actually killed Bin Laden.....wow that would be the most amazing thing anyone ever did. I'd say the chances weren't that great for him though. I wonder what a vacation checklist for a trip to kill Bin Laden would include?

You can't leave California. You belong there with the rest of the fruits and nuts, and I doubt your services are worth anything close to 70K (per decade, maybe)

You really believe that?

The reality within that White House, including from some inside sources, is that Rove believed Bush's re-election chances would be improved with the scary bin-Laden still on the loose. Further, it seems Rove manipulated the national security mechanism to further heighten the fear of Osama (based upon the public's misconception that Republicans are tougher in defense/security areas).

Skillet, did you know or do you remember that Bush's WH/Homeland Security called one LOOONG Orange Alert, from July 2004 continuously until November 10, eight days AFTER the election? Pretty suspicious timing, any way you look at it. During these three-plus months, there was a pattern of news conferences and high-profile deployments that clearly coincided with positive Kerry news cycles.

No less an authority that Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge confirmed this in his book "“The Test of Our Times: America Under Siege":

Ridge reveals that he considered resigning because he was urged to issue a politically-motivated
security alert on the eve of Bush’s re-election. (Ridge believes he) was pushed to declare Orange Alerts
on the eve of the election, something he saw as politically motivated and worth resigning over.

It's fine to be a Republican, I respect that. But any lingering defense of Bush and his presidency is nothing more than ostrich behavior.

Ah, so you have no proof except for an increasingly convoluted conspiracy theory worthy of Gaffney.

You do realize how insane that sounds, right?

I've always liked you llama, I really have. But you and I live in two different worlds ... this post proves it.

To me, your thoughts there are borderline retarded.

You are right. My world is devoid of overhanging conspiracy theories about George W. Bush.

You guys think that Bush was simultaneously the stupidest and the most cunning politician in the history of planet Earth. Tell me how that makes any sense.

I dont think that there's much logic involved. Its more emotionally based in hatred for all things conservative, which ironically Bush was not.

I'm sorry, I didn't make that clear. I'll try again:

BUSH = MOST STUPID
ROVE = MOST CUNNING

Glad I could clear that up.
