The Denver Broncos signed right guard Chris Kuper a six-year contract Friday.

Kuper's deal is worth $29 million with $15 million in guarantees, an NFL source told ESPN.com's Bill Williamson.

"The fact that the Broncos are putting this much trust in me is an incredible feeling," Kuper said in a statement. "It is a dream come true. ... This is where I wanted to be because I feel like this team is headed in the right direction, and my family is excited that we can stay here and be a part of it."

Kuper, a fifth-round pick in 2006 out of the University of North Dakota, started 15 games for the Broncos last season after missing the season opener with an ankle injury.

According to Stats Inc., the 6-foot-4, 303-pound Kuper has surrendered just five sacks in 42 career starts.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said in a release Friday that the Broncos look forward to his "leadership and toughness in our efforts to build a championship caliber team."

Denver also signed fullback Kyle Eckel on Friday and released third-string quarterback Tom Brandstater as well as offensive lineman Maurice Williams.

Just asking but is this the first hold over from the prior regime that McDaniels has signed long term?

Not sure if we would call these long term: but Casey Wiegmann, Mario Haggan, Brandon Stokley and DJ Williams are all leftovers from the previous regime that saw extentions or reworked deals under Brian Xanders and Josh McDaniels.

Because they would sound stupid if they said the team was headed in the wrong direction?

I have a feeling we are heading in the right direction....I'm simply stating that a player would look foolish to say the team is heading in the wrong direction after signing a long term deal.

My place of employment is floundering in mediocrity....but you won't catch me stating we are heading in the wrong direction while I am at work in front of those who sign my paycheck.

He also said that we traded away our first because we didn't want two first round picks. He also said both Kuper and Dumervil would be gone at the end of the year. He also said that firing Shanahan and hiring McDaniels saved money.

So to sum up, Bowlen is not broke and most of the moves he's made have not saved him money.

Perhaps this is a dumb question.....but is this 6 year contranct an EXTENSION on his 1 year tender that he signed? (i.e. do we now have him for 7 years? 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016)

Or is this in place of his 1-year tender....meaning he's signed through 2015 and not 2016?

I ask because I remember reading that Marshall's contract in Miami was an extension on his one year tender.

I'd assume its an extension that, like Marshall's, wraps the tender up into it and ends up being a six year deal. I.E. a 5 year deal on top of the 1 year tender.

I don't know if I was being critical... I just was questioning the pick based on what I know about the pick. Until I see a game I will reserve any more opinion... I definitely won't make my decision based on any "inside" info I may or may not be getting. Hopefully everyone will mesh and they will kick a$$. That will make me ecstatic.

It was a fair deal for both parties involved.

If Chris outplays the deal, they can tear it up with a few years left on the contract.

The NFL is all about guaranteed money and base salary the first 2 or 3 years of the deal, the rest is just ego fluff added in.

Chris made out pretty good and the Broncos get to keep a young talented player with a lot of starting experience.

The one thing about Chris' contract that is a little striking is that it appears to be a contract that doesn't have to be reworked for the team to keep him. Although I am of course not familiar with the details of the contract, it appears to be a pretty balanced deal just looking at the raw numbers that shouldn't escalate into years that will never actually be played and require a renegotiation after 3 or 4 years. Obviously some contracts in the NFL today are artificially enlarged with a year or two at the end with grossly escalated salaries that the team has no intention of ever paying, certainly the Evans contract could be one such contract.
