TJ Edit: Found a bug... No worries.. yet... read on...

Hey all...

What do Al Wilson, Chris Watton, and Josh Scobey have in common?

Beats me... But all of them have their profiles automatically linked when their full names are typed in here at the Mane...

I've spent the better part of the day working on adding this feature to the Mane, making it so that when players who are either on the Broncos roster, or are among the top in their conference in just about every measurable stat have their name typed in, it is automatically linked to the NFL.com player database, giving readers yet another frame of reference on who is being discussed...

While not every name is linked, a good number of them are...

It should be a great education tool that will come in handy for discussions around here... Just another way to make the Orange Mane posters the most knowledgable in the league... Knowitall :)

Nice try...

There is a little bug that I just found out about that seems to affect the board... I am trying to figure out how to get it fixed, because it's a pretty serious bug...

Everyone has probably noticed that if you hold your mouse over a thread title, you get a quick summary of the thread... Apparently, this new feature affects that summary by completley screwing up the thread title on the threads screen. (don't know if that made any sense... It's late and I'm losing my bearing...

I'll figure out what to do later... In the mean time, mods, if you see a thread title jaked because of this, simply edit the post by dropping a "fixing this" at the top of the post, and then hit the enter button about 8 or so times...

Ugh...

Taco John
01-11-2004, 04:25 AM
Dammit dammit dammit...

This may not work at all... It turns out if you use the players full name in the thread title, it links to the NFL database, but not to the thread that the poster just submitted...

*augh!*

Taco John
01-11-2004, 04:36 AM
ok... I turned off the thread preview feature so the board isn't completely disrupted... At least until I figure out what to do...

Ugh... Damn I hate being the one to find the new bugs...

Taco John

There's a problem though... If you use one of these names to start a thread (ie. Jake Plummer says to the media, blah blah blah), it doesn't link to the thread properly...

And if you use the name in the middle of the thread title, it links to the thread at the beginning of the line, but once it gets to the player's name in the middle of the thread, it links to the database, AND stops linking the rest of the thread...

Hopefully this is something that can be fixed...

No old timers in it... It's all stats leaders from this season...

I might scrap the system though, due to some unforseen incompatibilities...

TJ, you'd probably be better off linking it to www.pro-football-reference.com instead, since they don't drop profiles as guys retire.

I think we should switch to http://www.pro-football-reference.com/ .

We would lose the punters, but it worth it to gain all the retired players.

That's good feedback, because on my way home from the store, I had a notion of scrapping it... But I'll hold off and see how it goes...

But like that thread on the main page called "Keyshawn Johnson." Instead of linking to a thread, it would link to his NFL Player database page...

I guess we'll just see how it goes...

ugh!~

Yeah, on the plus side though, since we know about the bug, we'll know not to just type the name of a player in the subject line.

Quick solution to that particular thread though TJ.

Just add the words "is an idiot" after his name and they can click on that part.

It's very good so far. What would really make it sweet is some extra automatic links (which I guess you would have to add by hand) for nicknames, both good and bad. Like:

Sonic
Eddie Quitterson
TrINT Green
IHOP
etc.

Actually, that wouldn't work... It would have to be before the name, not ofter it, because the linkage after the name is cut off...

Ok, change the thread title to "Mr. Idiot Keyshawn Johnson"

I see your point, but not all players will link to NFL.com because they are not statistical leaders. Hence, clicking on the Keyshawn thread will take you to it, not NFL.com, because Keyshawn sucked this year.

Arkie

It's interesting to look at that list of free agents thats floating around the forum. You can see which players had good years by looking to see if they're linked.
