The common theme -- and perhaps the only theme -- in Denver has always been, “We’re trying to build a competitive team that will be tough in tough times.” They’ve always been firmly behind quarterback Kyle Orton but have been very careful to make sure no one has a free pass on being competitive and earning the job.

The trade talk surrounding Orton before the draft was not real -- nor would have been realistic.

That's been my feeling, right or wrong. It makes absolutely no sense.

I can not wait to see how it plays out on the field. If you want to see an example of someone shrinking to competition, Jake Plummer became a shadow when Cutler was picked.

I agree with this article. The only way to see what we have for real in Orton is to push him with more competition. If he responds like Drew Brees to Phillip Rivers (NOT saying Orton is or ever will be Drew Brees) that can only benefit the Broncos. If he goes all Plummer/Cutler ie whining and pouting at the very idea he might not start, then he'll implode on or off the field.

I tend think if it doesn't work out it, it will be because Orton isn't able to raise his level of play. I anticipate a plateau of sorts. I think he'll be better with a better running game and if the line can improve, that will help as well. However his lack of athleticism and little to no killer instinct as a QB doesn't have my hopes up.

I do think Orton could win a Super Bowl, but it would be on a team where the running game or defense is the super star of the team. He's better than Trent Dilfer, but not by a great deal. We'll see. Hopefully we find a good starter out of all this.

Killer instinct? This team hasn't had a killer instinct for a decade.

Orton has yet to be the uncontested, undisputed starter at this time of year any year during his NFL career. Why on Earth people are even entertaining the idea that he'll pull a Plummer or are treating this as anything different than he's already used to, I'll never understand.

The guy has literally had to fight to become the starter every summer since he's been in the league.

There is a difference.

In Chicago, he was never expected to win the starting job, and he was more of the caretaker of the position. Chicago wanted Rex to be the QB.

It is easy to step up when you are the chaser and the not the one being chased. Chris Simms was never a threat last year, for good reason.

Did Orton's tender ever get signed?

In Denver, he is the caretaker of the position. Denver wants Tebow to be the QB.

Yup, you're right. No similarities at all.

Yup, he signed it last month.

This year yes....last year no. Keep up:sunshine:

It is still Orton's job to lose. No expects Tebow to win the starting job week 1, except Tim Tebow.

He was and is #1 QB with no one chasing last year, this year he has 2 chasing.

I am not saying that Orton will crumble, but I think that he may press or look over his shoulder.

I guarentee, McDaniels intends to let them compete for 1st string QB.

Which ever of the 4 gives us the best chance to win this year will play.

Branstater will likely be cut.

If Tebow doesn't start, we will carry 3 with Tebow likely No.2.

If Orton turns up and out plays the others, he will start this year. But he will NEVER have another year in Denver from here on out where his job is not under serious threat.

Orton is the starter until he gets injured. And then all bets are off.

Man that is true. The choke factor for this team had been horrific going on ten years now. Late game collapses. Late season collapses. We are tough sometimes, but rarely scary.

Tebow isn't pushing anyone this year. I do hope that Quinn can give Orton a run for his money. I'm excited to see our new WR's and our offensive line perform this year. I can live with Orton for another year...I just hope he grows a pair and actually tries to make a few more plays down the field this year!

Yes, Brandstater will be stashed on PS, or will get "injured" right before the last cut down.
