This gets my vote. It is the only movie I have ever watched where I felt bad for and rooted for a pedophile to get the job done. In my opinion this movie is wrong on so many levels that it has to be the best.

My only question is was the Military father gay?? I don't think he was I think he was trying to protect his son. However my wife thinks he was gay.

Father is gay. He kills Spacey because of a perceived rejection and an irrational fear of being "outed".

Nope, I'm telling you it deeper then that. The father clearly goes over there and offer's himself up to Kevin spacey so that Spacey wont take advantage of his son. Kinda like kill me not my son. When spacey turns him down he then decides to kill spacey because that is the only way that he will stay away from his son.

I never thought about it in those terms but you are right it is a near perfect movie. Riveting story, superb acting, very well developed characters and takes the viewer through a gambit of emotions. I too have watched it many times. It's one of those movies that if I see it channel surfing I will watch it over other choices that I haven't see even once.

The movie was way too deep for for him to be gay. They never talk about this in the directors cut either. I guess we will never know but, I think saying he was gay is taking the easy way out.

Also I will agree Shawshank and Forest gump are great movies. You may have to make a point for cast away. That is the only movie I ever have seen that it 3 hours long with 20 minutes of talking and keeps you going the whole way.

Gonna go out on a limb here and ask how many straight men would go and kiss another man just for the hell of it?

None?

Ok. So the "straight" colonel attempts to make out with Spacey, gets turned down, runs away. Comes back later, kills spacey. Does this sound like behavior of a straight man trying to protect his kid? It sounds like a gay man who hates his life thinking the next door neighbor is a fruit too, and maybe they can be fruit together and when Spacey obviously in the movie is not, dude goes crazy and shoots him to protect the "secret".

So like I said, that is more fitting to the character, and actually adds a complexity to him that did not exist before the kissing moment.

I'm telling you. He was trying to protect his son. He was military and hated gay's worse then anything. So he went over to Lester's house and kissed him he was offering himself up so he would not touch his boy anymore. When that failed the next step was to kill him. 1. American Beauty, seriously think this film was overrated, and yes the neighbor was gay just as was already discussed. I don't recall Kevin Spacey ever hitting on the son, just the 17 year old blonde chick so yes the father was homophobic because of his own inability to deal with his homosexuality, thus killing Kevin Spacey as was discussed. - personally I thought it was a Hollywood knock against suburban living and kind of pompous and a pretty negative portrayal of women (as either weak or shrill ball busters)
2. Gladiator is a good movie, not great and not even Russell Crowe's best film as far as I am concerned (The Insider and LA Confidential my two favorite performances of his).
3. The others on the list were okay, but greatest of all time, not really.
4. this list pretty much sums up most of my favorites by decade: http://www.filmsite.org/200films.html though since they left off Princess Bride from the 80s I question it.

He hates gays because he IS gay. He beats the hell out of his kid because he thinks the son is gay, constantly berates him for being a ****** or queer because he himself is a big flamer. No straight man would make out with someone abusing their kid...they would bring the gun over and kill him in the first place.

It's just because of the new technology. One day people will forget about Avatar as a great movie, and remember it more for being the first of a new technology.

I think sometimes how much a movie means to you can have some to do with when you saw it, who you were with, what kind of mood you were in.

Also being surprised is cool. When I went to see Shawshank I went being drug. I was like I hate Tim Robbins, this movie looks boring. Then it turns out to be one of my all time favorites.

Another movie that is special to me is Jaws. My mom didn't want dad to take me because she thought I was too young. I was!!! LOL. But we went to a drive in without telling her. Something about being bad with my dad that made that night special.

That and any John Wayne movie. I actually can't like people when they talk crap about John Wayne. He was my dads hero and favorite actor and it rubs me the wrong way.

When Gettysburg came out it was the only movie I remember having an intermission. Went to see it with my dad and brothers. Good flick.

A buddy of mine and I went to see Passion of the Christ. Ive never actually had a physical reaction to on screen violence before, but it was ridiculously hard to watch.

I like John Wayne. Like Clint Eastwood. Loved him in Unforgiven.

I just saw Thunderbolt and Lightfoot again. Clint was Clint, and a young Jeff Bridges had a great role. Definitely worth a watch, that is for sure.

Passion is the only DVD I have ever bought that I have never watched. The more I heard about it, I just decided that i don't feel the need to be moved by the graphic nature of it. Not saying I don't like watching violent films, or that the religious aspect bothers me, just never felt like watching it.

It sits in the bin unopened.

Enemy at the Gates I also thought was a hell of a movie.

Sorry Rev, didn't mean to start a big epic debate about the best movie ever.

That was good. Hard to do a movie about Russians, with non Russian actors, but it doesn't take away from the film. Still very good watch. All time great though? Probably would have to say it's in the 2nd tier of movies. War movies seem to be a little easier to make compelling, so it's a tough genre, lots of great films.

Last of the Mohicans. Never gets old. Ahhh Madeline Stowe in her prime.
Shawshank. For reasons mentioned above.
Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. Redford & Newman perfection.
Cool Hand Luke. Newman again at his best.
Pride of the Yankees & Sgt. York. Two Gary Cooper classics.

I fell asleep reading this post.

I know it sounds terrible, I was forced to watch it in a foreign film class, but it's great.

Absolute epic movie. I can't believe I forgot that one. What a performance! And I love the beginning... Cutting down parking meters, one by one...

I think one thing this proves is what a great actor Paul Newman was. Look how many films he was in getting mentioned.

Sting, Cool Hand Luck, Long Hot Summer also Color of Money I think a great one for him. Not sure about all time great movie, but a good movie with a great performance.

Black Hawk Down was actually a very good movie.

I could name about 10 other war movies that are better than Black Hawk Down, maybe more. Its not even in the top 10 in it's own genre, and I think the OP put it in more as a joke than anything.

Funniest movie ever. American Pie or Caddy Shack. Can't decide which one they are both great in there own ways.

Blazing Saddles puts those movies to shame.

Braveheart by a LONG way! (Ignoring it's historical "faults")
I'm planning to DO Halloween this year for the first time, I'm going as William Walllace!
After working with a few Scots over the years, I can drop a good Scottish accent too, ... now just need to find which bar is offering the best "prize"!
