JaMarcus Russell has been released by the Raiders confirmed.

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell after three unproductive and highly paid seasons.

Senior executive John Herrera told The Associated Press the move was made Thursday and that "we wish him well."

The decision comes less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington to take over at quarterback.

Russell will now likely be considered the biggest draft bust in NFL history. He will have been paid more than $39 million by the Raiders, while producing only seven wins as a starter.

He lost his starting job midway through last season. His career has been hampered by a rookie holdout, poor work habits, being overweight and the lack of productive players around him.

Actually, now he can see if he can get on with some other team and really make big money.......

He will never supplant Leaf as the biggest bust, although on a pound for pound mesure, Russsel is certainly the largest.......

He'll latch on somewhere else. Interior DL with the ability to rush the buffet are a high value commodity in the NFL.

Chargers signed Ryan Leaf to a four-year contract worth $31.25 million, including a guaranteed $11.25 million signing bonus. It was, at the time, the largest signing bonus ever paid to a rookie.

Russell held out through training camp and the first weeks of the 2007 NFL season, until September 12, 2007, when he signed a six-year contract worth up to $68 million, with $31.5 million guaranteed

Russell cleary was the bigger bust.

Oakland seemingly has a very strange way of working the cap. they sign big free agents yearly, and have a top 5 pick in every draft, yet there is never any talk about them working to stay under the cap.

Yes! Thats the spirit, Smilin! I gave you the inside info on how good he looked in OTAs. All he needs is some coaching to turn him around... Denver is a GREAT fit till Tebow is ready. Oh sure, he only threw for 2 TDs in 33 quarters in '09. Then he got benched for GradWho?ski who threw for 3 TDs in 1 quarter. That shows that all he needs is some Denver-style coaching to be GREAT! Give him a chance in Orange & Blue you guyz!

I dunno... a valid argument could be made for Lechler over Janikowski. Pretty sad when your punter is the only player to consistently go to the Pro Bowl since 2002....

So I'll ask it.

Worst pick ever? Time to poll...

For me, yes this was the worst pick ever, and financially yes but here is what SD paid for Leaf

You decide
When they entered the 1998 draft, Manning and Leaf were widely considered to be the two best overall players in the draft.[9] The San Diego Chargers held the third pick of the draft, but made a trade with the Arizona Cardinals to guarantee their team would get one of the two quarterbacks. To move up to the second pick in the draft, the Chargers traded two first-round picks, a second-round pick, reserve linebacker Patrick Sapp and three-time Pro Bowler Eric Metcalf.

Anybody who takes him on is insane.

He's got a woeful attitude, and needs lots and lots of work before he could be classified as even a passable NFL QB.

I doubt he's ever employed in the NFL again, and anyone who takes him on deserves to suffer for it IMO.
