About twice a week, for the past decade or so, Demaryius Thomas has spoken to his mother on the phone. She is in prison, midway through a 20-year sentence for selling drugs.

Now Thomas is in the NFL, a first-round draft pick by the Broncos. The pair spoke again Friday while Thomas was en route to Denver.

"They watched last night," Thomas said. "She just said she was proud of me, just do the right thing, stay with the right crowd, what I've been doing the whole time."

Thomas said he always told his mother that someday he would be a professional athlete, and he credits becoming active in sports for keeping him out of trouble after she went to prison when he was about 12 years old. Thomas' grandmother also is in prison for selling drugs.

"I knew they were going to be in prison for a while, and I didn't want to be like them and put myself in the position they got in," Thomas said.

On Friday, Thomas said he believed the Broncos chose to make him the first wide receiver drafted at No. 22 in 2010 in part because "I'm a good guy."

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Dez Bryant the talented but somewhat troubled receiver two picks later at No. 24. Thomas was asked Friday how he is a better receiver than Bryant. Thomas hesitated at first, then gave an honest answer.

"I know I'm a better person than Dez, that's how I feel," Thomas said. "I feel like I'm a better receiver, too, bigger, faster. I don't know."

Thomas said he expects to spend two or three more weeks on the final stages of rehab for the broken bone in his foot, an injury he suffered Feb. 15 while he prepared for the NFL combine. That means Thomas will be held out of the Broncos' rookie minicamp scheduled for next weekend but that he should be ready for the first full-squad camp later in May. Thomas will be back in Denver on Thursday to finish his rehab with Broncos trainers.

"I'll be at 100 percent in two to three weeks," he said.

Yeah, I saw that quote too. Seems like a good kid, and pretty intelligent too, but that quote seems pretty harsh.

To be fair, I think he just mis-spoke. Hopefully, the national media won't pick it up and run with it...

You know they will though. That's ok - it's the truth and, probably, a big reason we took him over Dez. Kid has quite a story - impressive how he stayed out of trouble given where he came from. He has a right to be proud.

And Dez lied to the NCAA and got suspended for the season. And Dez was suspended earlier in his career by his team for tardiness. And Dez showed up for his pro day unprepared and out of shape. And Dez showed up to support Pacman Jones at his workout for teams. And Dez was a top 5 talent passed over until the 24th pick due to character concerns. And we took Thomas two picks higher.

I hate drafting players who are hurt. He better be good we can't afford a first round bust right now. Tebow better heal him or something.

We selected him at #22. Dez went #24 basically back to back

I thought his comments were hilarious and I liked it because it showed the kind of spunk we need on this team. Thomas was an option offense receiver who put up spread offense numbers. This was a solid pick.

He played in the same option offense as Calvin Johnson too. CJ certainly hasn't had any problems transitioning to the NFL, despite being on a poor team with inconsistent QB play.

His story is pretty amazing. Coming from that background i think many people would fall into that hole. Here's an interview with the fan yesterday.

You should just turn in your claiming to be a bronco fan and go root for your Vikings. All you do is piss and moan and piss and moan with the occasional stupid comment that is so far from the truth. Is your keyboard still broke or just the key actuator?

DT's gonna have to get used to the media. They won't let him just do his job, they gotta have quotes. I figure he'll do his job just fine, but he's not a loquacious quote-machine.

Ouch. Hopefully, they'll get him an interview coach. "Dez is a great receiver. I'm grateful coach selected me where he did and I want to do everything I can to help the team." Boring. But then the team doesn't spend time dealing with unnecessary controversies.

I don't even think he really wants attention. He just has a lot of stupid things to say and he chooses this board as his outlet to say them. I'm guessing he doesn't even really read any of the posts before he posts, or after. I think he looks at the thread title, it causes some horribly idiotic thought to come into his head and he posts it. Then goes to the next thread and does the same thing. I'm not sure he can even really understand what is happening in the real world around him.

DeMaryius Thomas is often kind of seen as Brandon Marshall's replacement. They're both big and physical WRs. Brandon Marshall was more polished and was fed the ball more. He might have even been stronger. But seeing Thomas score on that 80 yard TD was the first time I ever watched Thomas make a play and said to myself, "there's no way Brandon Marshall could have done that". You can really see the difference in speed on that play.

And that was the whole take on Thomas.. that he was faster than Brandon Marshall. But that Dez Bryant was the more complete WR overall.

If not for Bryant's off the field issues he might have been a Bronco.

Dez is a self-centered drama queen and I'm SOOO glad we went with DT over him! ...Too bad DT has had the unhandy injuries the first 1.5 years but hopefully thats all over now and he's exploding right on time!

Kid will be a true beast next year after Tebow and he have their first full off-season together with the team .. Decker too. Everyone will be a lot sharper and more in sync come September.

If and when Tebow works out the fine tune mechanics and foot work with Elway and a true QB coach this offseason and dramatically improves his short to medium accuracy and timing and gets more comfortable throwing timing patterns and not waiting until the guy is open, he will become an incredibly dangerous QB giving opposing DCs on our schedule nightmares.

Already from this last game teams are no longer going to be so comfortable stacking the box which WILL open the run game even more. Its getting to Pick your Poison time with Tebow and the Broncos so all the Einsteins on ESPN who are so convince Tebow is a joke ... looks like the jokes on them!

Couldn't be happier to see Tim answer the bell Sunday as he did.. that was simply HUGE in every way!

i gotta admit i was wrong on that one. i liked DT coming out but thought it was a mistake to not grab Dez since he was more complete.
i wasn't pissed off about the pick since it was said for a long time before the draft that we liked DT.
if he can stay healthy and continue to improve then he will be a great WR to compliment Tebow.

I remember DT saying something similar about Marshall.... something along the lines of him being asked how he felt about being Marshall's replacement and saying "I'm a better blocker and I have better character."

Great game....but Bey Bey still needs a lot of work with the jugs machine.

Hand positioning....not trying to catch balls with your stomach while in the red zone....you know, the finer points of being a WR.
