This is probably a stupid thread but has anyone heard any crazy coyote screams or howls?

I'm sure people have, but the last time I went up the cabin I was just laying down to sleep when I heard this blood curdling scream.

Kind of like a women screaming or a child, freaked my me out big time.

I mean I've lived in the country before but never heard anything like it.

I live in the sticks and hear them from time to time.

I keep my eye on my Jack Russell and Dachshund when I let them out at night.

Thanks, I found this earlier.

The sound was pretty similar to those

I read somewhere that they scream when they make a kill or want to flush prey out.

A mountain lion can sound like a woman screaming. I used to hear them on our ranch near Montrose fairly often.

It may of been but I doubt it, unless they come into town that close.

But the scream is unreal, it was right outside the cabin.

You sure about that? I mean I believe you, but a coyote can make the same sound right?

Thats a cougar. A mountain lion.

I thought so too, but after thinking about it, a lion wouldn't be so close to people this time of year with food being so plentiful.

Coyotes sound like you'd imagine a dog yipping or a wolf howling would sound. A lion is pretty wicked sounding. No way to really describe it, but the 'blood curdling' you mentioned is as good as any I've heard.

Probably a rabbit being killed. Rabbits scream, coyotes don't.

It depends on the lion and on the environment. If a lion tracks pets to a given area, it can linger.

His description sounds too much like a mountain lion to be anything else. Its a pretty unique noise. Anyone who hears it for the first time finds it unsettling...a bit like listening to a woman being killed and screaming or something.

I wouldnt go outside at night, and I would let your local animal control division know that you heard a mountain lion.

Dont go outside at night or send your pets out at night and report the lion to your local animal services department.

You're in SoCal. If it was that loud, sure I can believe it was a cougar. Didn't you have a thread a while ago about hiking in SoCal? Might have been TJ. You gotta be wary in SoCal.

I had one about the cabin and hiking boots.

We are pretty careful when we go up there, I don't go outside after 10.

We are pretty careful, but you can never be to careful.

I told the maintenance person about it, she reports everything to the animal services.

Yeah, when we lived in Evergreen, it used to creep us out. I thought it sounded more like a baby crying. We'd sleep with the windows open, so it sounded like they were in the room with us.

Cool it may have been, but be wary, sounds like you have a big animal thereabouts.

I was in San Diego County for a long time, and the State killed about 100 cougars a year on predation permits. They'd let them kill a sheep or a calf, then wait all night until they returned to the kill, then shoot them. Used to hear the shots every few nights.

I live in a pretty rural area and at night you can hear packs of them running out in the woods, more than likely chasing whitetails.

This isnt a stupid thread and what you heard was what I heard about 15 years ago but it was a cougar and not a coyote. I was 25 years old and went to a Jimmy Buffet concert with a few friends and brought these ladies along. We were drinking in the parking lot which is near the old Lion Country Safari (if any of you remember that in Orange Country) when the lady that I just meet at the previous concert there (Sting) was getting a little drunk and wanted some fun action. I took her not to the wild life surrounding this place like you might believe. I took her to the back of this RV where the beds were located. Then I heard the scream you were describing and right then I knew it was a cougar. She was probably 38 with kids. First time with a cougar and it was good times. The sound brought some of my friends to the back and ruined any other action after that. She should have been more discreet.

Just about the same here, going back up there soon hopefully we hear some more calls.

Wonder if you can record it somehow, hmm.

I have heard packs of coyotes squealing really loud. If you only heard one animal, not a coyote. If you heard multiple squeals from various animals, likely it was a few coyotes attacking each other.

I have coyotes out my way. Luckily they stay off my place. If one does venture over it generally gets a very quick dose of lead poison to the head.

I agree with what a few others have said. One "scream" is not likely a coyote as they travel in groups. When one goes off they all go off and it's an unmistakable almost haunting sound.

I caught a couple of them trying to rape my dog one night, hell them howling is the reason I woke up so early this morning.

My wife lied there for a few years, said the big ass Elk were scarier than the the coyotes!

Yes. My neighbor has a female fox with 7 pups in his backyard. This is exactly the sound I heard the other night. It did freak me out at first.

Ha!

Did you ever hear the weird noise a bittern makes? They're very cool birds... when they're standing among a bunch of reeds, cat-tails or swamp grass, they think you can't see them if they point their beaks up at the sky.
