U.S. Troops Too Fat to Fight?

by Stew Smith

An article written by the Associated Press describing the overweight soldiers in our military (titled "Are U.S. Troops Too Fat to Fight?"), discusses the overweight trends of the active duty and reserve military, but also the recruits who are too heavy to enter into the military. The military community has always been a cross section of society -- good or bad. These days, as our country increases in size, it is only a matter of time before the military shares the traits of obesity and associated illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and some forms of cancer to name a few.

A shocking 20 percent of all male recruits and 40 percent of female recruits are too heavy to enter into the military ranks. Basically, the new recruits have to lose weight so they can barely pass the minimum standards in both the height/weight measurements as well as the physical fitness tests. See the PFT standards for all military branches.

OK. But not all those people are recruits in the first place. I know alot of people in the 1195th reserve unit that just got back and none of them are fat.

I understand Stew's point, just trying to understand yours. Not everybody at Mickey D's is a recruit in the first place. Yes, the USA as a whole is overweight and so are most people who eat regularly in fast food places.

It's not just the crap we allow in our foods. It's our genes. We have a gene that tells our body to take any excess sugars and store them as fat. We've carried this gene for millenia. It helped us survive. Now, it just makes us fat. In tests on mice, this gene was removed and all the little mice could eat whatever they wanted and never get fat. We just have to re-engineer our genes. ;D

My brother had a hard time with weight when he joined the Marines. when he graduated bootcamp though he was down to 151 pounds. He's 5'9, and went in around 210. We did not even recognize him.

My dad actually would gain weight while home and lose a ton of weight while on float.

No way. In the perfection of the free market all things will be made available to all people, at a reasonable price. Volume marketing blesses all. We'll be able to re-engineer ourselves and our offspring. We will find, and remove, the "death genes" and live for hundreds of years. We will all be beautiful, thin and rich. All will be perfection.

Surely you are joking.

The best cosmetic surgery is only financially viable for the rich. When some company figures out how to remove the fat gene the first market they will tap will be actors, models and athletes.

The question then is what will happen to nose tackles, plus-size models and fat funny guys in Hollywood.

I was so borderline when I joined, my stomach was quivering from sucking it in while they were doing the tape test. I got my mark exactly, I went through, I lost the better part of 10% body fat while in training and it was never an issue.

Once I left the real army though, those issues arose again. Similar problems are happening in deployments right now where things like PT are often ignored because you're already working 12+ hour days, who wants to get together and force longer days on someone? Also, with shiftwork being commonplace, it's too hard to do. Combine that with the all you can eat D-Facs they run over there and it's very, very easy to pack on the lbs.

Too fat to fight though? Not a chance. You'll naturally be conditioned to do whatever your job entails. If you're in a physical job, the exercise inherent in doing that job every day will keep you at a reasonable physical condition to continue said job.

There are 2 issues, right? One - recruits - if it's just concerning recruits then *maybe* we should look at a special 'fat camp' for those prior to bootcamp. Two - active duty - I've tried nothin and I'm all out of ideas.

Two generations ago people were cooking with bacon fat or crisco. Not exactly health conscious.

What has changed is portions. Do we really need a 3/4 lb burger? Do we need two chicken breasts, cheese and bacon with mayo as a sandwich? Its not what we are eating, but how much.

I suppose we could make everything free. Ambition and initiative are just the handmaidens of that evil bitch capitalism. Work and self reliance will just become caricatures in a museum (funded from the money those pesky rich folks like to hold onto) telling future generations that at one time Americans actually had to WORK for a living. Oh the horror they will experience at seeing an America where things were not given to you...who needs to work for things? Much easier to just get them. That definately makes you appreciate it more, being handed things. I mean, that silly notion of KEEPING the fruits of your labor rather than being forced to share it with people who did not put any work into it...

This new place...we will call it Handoutica, where a priveledged few get to make decisions for the whole, asking them to live up to regulations those priveleged few dont have to deal with or obey. Of course in Handoutica, they unfortunately have to be a world superpower, whether they like it or not. We also better cozy up to despotic regimes, because its more important to be friendly with an enemy then friendly with an ally. And every once and awhile a man who gets elected president and has been so for two weeks gets to win the nobel peace prize because of potential. Cuz thats how they roll in handoutica.

In my experience, deployment is a cure for obesity. Food sucks on deployment, so you don't eat as much. Everyone in my squadron lost weight, anywhere from a few pounds to 30-40.

As for recruits being overweight, if they don't meet standards, send them back home. We kick plenty of people out for weight/physical readiness standard issues. Huge waste of time and effort for all involved. Military is about discipline. If you don't have/can't learn the self discipline to keep yourself from getting fat, we don't want/need you.

Exactly. Its all a matter of how you are built. If my dad (5'7 but stocky) was 200 lbs, he would look heavy. If my youngest brother or I are at 200, we look fine. (both 5'10 ish) its all how you carry it, and your overall level of health. You can be in the Height/Weight ratio and be an unhealthy mofo.

Like right now, I am 268 pounds. My resting heart rate is 57 beats a minute and my blood pressure is low. So...the BMI can suck a cock.

Baja...I went to high school is western Pennsylvania...I saw enough to fulfill a lifetime. When the city of Pittsburgh's favorite dish is Eisely's chipped ham with Eisely's bbq sauce (a lovely salad spread made of 90% pork fat with chunks of ham mixed with spicey ketchup) then we can continue the discussion. I have watched these people imbibe nearly pure pork fat and did so with a big, greasy smile. If that ain't happy...I dont know what is.

Obese people are approaching 60% of the us population and climbing if the trend continues long enough survival of the species will be threatened.
