2006 Draft Revisited: Denver Broncos Shine above the Rest
by Sayre Bedinger Written on September 19, 2008 Denver went into the 2006 draft looking to improve a team that just went 13-3, and made it to the AFC Championship game. Instead of aiming for the present, head coach Mike Shanahan looked into the future, and made a move that shocked Bronco nation.

Round One

The Rams were on the clock at pick No. 11, and Matt Leinart had just fallen to the Cardinals at the previous pick. Leinart's fall was the talk of the day, because he was absolutely not supposed to have dropped into the Cardinals laps. Little did NFL fans know that the true steal of the draft was to come about 20 minutes later, when the AFC Runner-up Denver Broncos traded up to get Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler.

The pick was not a popular one, as analysts and fans felt the Broncos needed only a top-tier WR to take it to the next level. Shanahan knew what he was doing.

Cutler, the most unheralded SEC Offensive Player of the Year of all time became the first top 11 draft pick for Denver in more than a decade. The Broncos acquired an extra first round draft pick in exchange for Jason Campbell the previous year, and used that (15th overall) and the 68th overall pick to trade up for Cutler.

Jay Cutler

Combine: 4.7 second 40-yard dash, 24 bench press reps

SEC Offensive Player of the Year

Round Two

In round two, the Broncos traded for WR Javon Walker from Green Bay. Walker was an excellent addition in his first year in Denver. He was the explosive weapon the Broncos craved, but he was injured in 2007 and released in the offseason.

With the 61st overall pick, the Broncos looked to the TE position. Not Leonard Pope, Dominique Byrd, or Joe Klopfenstein. No no, the Broncos decided to take Western Michigan star Tony Scheffler. "Who's Todd Shishler???"

Tony Scheffler

Combine: 4.54 second 40-yard dash, 17 bench press reps

Western Michigan: 1,345 yards, 13 TDs

All Scheffler has done is set Broncos receiving records for a TE through this point in his career. He is a playmaker, and a major mismatch for linebackers and safeties in the NFL.

Round Four

Right after New England selected Steven Gostkowski with the 118th overall pick, the Broncos found a diamond in the rough. With the 119th overall pick, the Broncos selected Central Florida WR Brandon Marshall, a former safety.

Brandon Marshall

2nd Team All C-USA

Marshall was fifth in the NFL in 2007 with 102 catches, and was first among receivers in yards after the catch. He has vaulted himself into the NFL's elite receivers in 2008, and currently leads the NFL in receptions.

Seven picks later, the Broncos decided to end the wait of the reigning NCAA Defensive Player of the Year Elvis Dumervil.

Elvis Dumervil

NCAA Defensive Player of the Year

Leads the Broncos in the last two seasons with 21 sacks, and had a Pro Bowl caliber 2007 campaign with 12.5 sacks.

The Broncos also drafted current Giants KR/WR Domenik Hixon with a compensation pick in the fourth round, but released him after a series of fumbles and injuries early in his career. Hixon is one of the most dangerous return men in the game today.

Round Five

In the fifth round, Denver got another steal with current starting RG Chris Kuper, an unheralded lineman out of North Dakota.

The Broncos got their worth out of the 2006 draft, and may have netted themselves four or five future Pro Bowlers. This draft has set them up in very good shape for the 2008 season, and thanks to the production of this class they are legitimate Super

Buillshiat. Portis wanted a new contract before his final year, plus we pay plenty for Bailey and Bell was a bust.

Portis had a fine career. Buillshiat.

I said we paid plenty for Bailey. He was traded for good value, so was Cutler.

I just saying I doubt Orton or Quinn can move the ball without more solid blocking in both phases.

Honestly, I think our offense will suck, and unless rookies contribute, Denver is going to have a long year.

I recently looked over his bio on denverbroncos.com and saw this little gem about Kuper (which I seem to have forgotten):

ē Credited with not allowing a sack for the Broncos in 2008 according to Stats Inc. as the NFLís only 16-game starting guard to accomplish that feat.

Incredible draft by the Broncos. 6 out of 7 of those players are still in the NFL. Cutler being the best QB out of that class and Marshall being the best WR... too bad things just didn't work out in Denver.

Really looking forward to seeing how the new regime continues to rebuild the Broncos under McDaniel's system. I love how they concentrated on the D-Line at the beginning of FA and now have plenty of options to go through the draft. I'm hoping interior O-line, LBs, and CBs.

Only thing that would cause my shoe to go through the TV is trading up for another TE!

watermock

Whatever.

I would't give away 2 Quinns for Sheff.

Doesn't matter, we're going to run 4 wide with 2 recievers this year. Ore are we going to power block?

Make up your fuicking mind.

If you want to run both you play your hand.

Let me explain something to you.

In Shanahan's offense, you had playmakers that when you lined up, the QB made a read of the matchup.

Having a power blocking/4 wide doesn't do that.

Well, #1,the second leading yardage with 7 RB's on IR.

Also they got huge return for Cutler, but blew the picks.

30 turnovers and 16th in scoring.

Good thing we can tell a year out we "blew the picks".

Scheff was good for 14 games, but only did anything in 2 of them per year. He had 2 more starts in 2009 then he did in 2008 and had 9 few catches.

Change the station mock, you are doing nothing but throwing static.

Well, #1,the second leading yardage with 7 RB's on IR. Yardage: The measure of a fantastic offense. They were still below average in points scored, which wasn't very impressive.

Also they got huge return for Cutler, but blew the picks. Wait, so we can say Ayers, Quinn, and a player we won't even pick until Thursday are blown picks? Really? Logic would dictate we give them at least one more year before giving up on them, right?

You do realize we had a 10 million dollar TE on the roster right? yet we sign a dupe in the second? You do realize that we were trying to move to a power running scheme that requires blocking TE's, Scheffler couldn't block his way out of a wet paper bag, and Quinn was rated as the best blocking TE in the draft, right?

Scheff was cheap and had major APC. He was also made of glass. And gave up on the team last year. Not a guy we want to keep around.

We wait.

We paid Graham 9 million more, shouldn't he pay 9x more? Or is that why we traded up for Quinn?

Didn't Beavis already replace our DL FA class from '09?

The Dline FA signings from 2009 were widely viewed as good backup players who would be forced to start until better 3-4 dlinemen came available...which they did this offseason.

Our OC is the same...that did not change. It was also widely accepted our OLine coach and RB coach would be gone...considering our lack of success in running the football, this was a no duh which only became more obvious they were out when Shanahan became the Redskins HC. Nolan is gone because McDaniels wanted a more aggressive defense, that is not Nolan's style.

But keep playing that record Mock. I am sure someone will give a **** eventually.

We paid Graham 9 million more, shouldn't he pay 9x more? Or is that why we traded up for Quinn? Er, I'm pretty sure he DID play much more than Tony. Perhaps not 9 times more, but he was definitely utilized a lot more. Because he can actually block, you see.

Didn't Beavis already replace our DL FA class from '09? He signed MORE and BETTER FA DL, but the guys from last year are still on the team. More depth is a GOOD thing, isn't it?

AND our DC, OC, and RB coach and go to an old offense? We still HAVE our OC from last year. And we knew that Turner was gone as soon as Shanny got another job. As for Nolan, him leaving seemed to be what he wanted. Maybe he just prefers Miami.

Like I said, 4 wide or power? Well, we'll probably mostly run three wide. But why can't we have both, exactly?

Beavis has no clue. Truly, you have proven to be an astute football mind and an authority on what it takes to run a team. How dare Josh McDaniels do things differently than what you think is best?

I was very happy with the tradeup for Cutler. It was obvious that Plummer was winding down his career. Elvis and Kuper, I figured they'd pan out well. 2006 was a good draft.

Cutler turned out to be a jerk in some ways, but he did immediately plunge himself into the community with the Jay Cutler Foundation, currently giving kids with diabetes a chance to enjoy themselves. Nobody is all bad, although it seems we do try to be at times.

Why do you kiss mocks ass so much? Remember that delightful picture you posted of him in Mexico?

I have shared this place with Mock for nine years. There are two Mocks, before & after his brush with death. I am a loyal friend. The current Mock is a little tiresome but I still like him. Is that OK with you?

Whatever. The old drunk retard is what he is.

Mock may have issues with alcohol but he is no retard I can assure you.

For example my father was a brilliant NASA engineer but today at 90+ he has dementa. If you meant him today you might be tempted to call him a retard but for 95% of his life he was a brilliant mind with many NASA patents to his credit. There is usually more to the story.

You know that was in refence to the D.

That's fine.

Remember, as we trade down(or up) for more players that "fit our system", others will be playing his stupidity to pick BPA.

You know how I know that McDaniels isn't retarded, mock? He isn't you.

I wa never in Mexico so I never cared. Are you an idiot?

That's funny.

We paid Graham 9 million more, shouldn't he pay 9x more? Or is that why we traded up for Quinn?

Didn't Beavis already replace our DL FA class from '09?

AND our DC, OC, and RB coach and go to an old offense?

Like I said, 4 wide or power?

Beavis has no clue.
"Were just trying to win a mother****ing game."

We need to put you in touch with McD to inform him of these egregious errors that he's making.

I'd feel sorry for McD if he ever came into personal contact with you. It would be like Dan Reeves running into drunken bum on Federal rambling stuff about Steve DeBerg or something.
