Source: Steelers would explore trade for Roethlisberger
By Jason La Canfora | NFL.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had no dialogue with other teams about dealing embattled quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but lots of internal discussions about the matter, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

According to the source, ownership remains dismayed and embarrassed by Roethlisberger's actions in a Georgia college town this offseason as well as a string of other offseason incidents they find troubling, and have been monitoring the public backlash against Roethlisberger closely.

"The Rooneys are livid," the source said.

Steelers President Art Rooney, II will meet with the media Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET to discuss the Roethlisberger situation, but is not expected to make an announcement regarding and sort of suspension or Punishment for Roethlisberger.

Pittsburgh's front office has talked internally about possible trade scenarios that could be feasible and what makes sense for them moving forward, and, according to a source, if other teams called about Roethlisberger they would listen intently.

The Steelers could envision several scenarios that make sense for them but are skeptical about other teams taking on Roethlisberger, given his baggage. However, they also realize his contract is very tradeable in an uncapped year, with the bonuses already paid and Roethlisberger signed for six more years at a very manageable salary for a franchise QB ($8.05 million in 2010; $11.6 million per year from 2011-2014, and $12.1 million in 2015).

In particular, the Steelers are highly enamored with likely first-overall pick Sam Bradford. They view him as essentially a sure-thing franchise quarterback and have considered what it would take to move to first overall in a trade with the Rams, according to a source. They know executing a move that high up would be highly difficult and figure the Rams have limited interest in Roethlisberger.

Team officials are not worried about how Roethlisberger's return will impact the locker room and how teammates will handle it. The Rooneys' concern is born of the history and prestige of their franchise, the recent fan backlash and public perception about Roethlisberger and their belief that no player is bigger than the team.

However, the source noted that this is not "a Santonio Holmes situation," alluding to Pittsburgh dumping the talented but troubled receiver for a fifth-round pick over the weekend with him facing a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

"This is not a case of having to get rid of this guy,'" the source said. "There would have to be fair value."

Roethlisberger, selected 11th overall in 2004, has performed at an elite level for the Steelers. He is among the winngest quarterbacks ever for his age and already possesses two Super Bowl rings. His size, improvisational skills, ability to escape the rush to make plays, absorb hits and deliver the ball to all parts of the field make him among the very best in the league.

Should Roethlisberger have another off-field misstep, however, his Steelers career would likely be over, according to team and league sources. And, if a legitimate trade scenario materialized, that end could come much sooner.

Teams that are not committed long-term to a starting quarterback include: Buffalo, Cleveland, Oakland, St. Louis, San Francisco, Denver, Carolina, Seattle, Arizona. The Steelers refused to entertain dealing Holmes within the division and that would apply with Roethlisberger as well. A trade would likely have to involve a quarterback or put the Steelers in position to draft one they like (Pittsburgh is high on its young back-up, Dennis Dixon, however).

Finding the right deal is remote, they know, but not necessarily impossible.

Hopefully the Raiders and KC don't have enough left in their

Four months after becoming the toast of the NFL as the youngest Super Bowl-winning quarterback in history, Roethlisberger made his first appearance in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Big Ben flew over the handlebars of his 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa. The QB suffered a broken upper and lower jaw and a broken nose, along with multiple deep cuts to the face.

It was later discovered that Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet and that he didn't have a valid state license, as his temporary permit had expired two months earlier.

July 20, 2009: A Harrah's Lake Tahoe employee, Andrea McNulty, filed a civil suit against Big Ben, claiming that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted her at the casino in July of 2008. According to her lawsuit, the Steelers QB asked her to his hotel room to fix his TV, blocked the room exit, and then assaulted her. McNulty is asking for at least $440,000 from Roethlisberger and another $50,000 from Harrah's for allegedly defaming her and trying to cover up the assault. Roethlisberger has denied the allegations.

Nov. 22, 2009: Roethlisberger took a knee to the helmet in a Week 11 overtime loss to Kansas City. It was the fourth concussion of his career.

After a week of "will he or won't he?" leading up to a crucial Week 12 divisional matchup against Baltimore, Roethlisberger sat out the game and Dennis Dixon made his first-ever NFL start.

Dixon nearly led the Steelers to a win, only to fall in overtime once again, 20-17.

Locker room scuttlebutt erupted before the game as Hines Ward and other anonymous teammates questioned Big Ben's manhood for sitting out the game.

Head coach Mike Tomlin took the heat, saying it was his call in concert with team doctors and that Big Ben wanted to play. Nonetheless, the sight of him in pads all game long doesn't help the softness rumors.

Roethlisberger returned Week 13 only to lead Pittsburgh to two more embarrassing losses to Oakland and Cleveland.

On March 5, 2010, allegations arose that Roethlisberger sexually assaulted a college co-ed in a bar bathroom.

Roethlisberger didn't deny that he and the woman, reportedly a student at the nearby Georgia College and State University, had relations. Through his attorney, Big Ben said it was a mutual consummation of attractions after a night of partying.

Former Ray Lewis attorney Ed Garland was called in to play the equivalent of Harvey Keitel's "The Wolf" clean-up

Hall of Fame former Steelers QB Terry Bradshaw gave scathing remarks about current Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger on Monday. A Georgia DA announced on Monday he would not prosecute Roethlisberger for an alleged sexual assault against a 20-year-old woman.

Bradshaw said he and Roethlisberger do not have a good relationship. His full remarks:

"When I told him to park the motorcycle, he got pissed. Then he had the accident. Ever since then, he doesn't like me, and I'm learning not to like him. And he wants to break all my records and I say 'go for it.' Break them. I really don't care. I've done my job. My job is over and now you have your shot. But in my opinion, he has got to realize who he is. He is an elite athlete in the National Football League. You've got an image problem right now. The best thing to do is not put yourself in that position again. When you're through playing football, you can do whatever you want to do, but right now, stay clean."

With rampant rumors making the rounds regarding some type of an unpleasant exchange between Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and goldf legend Arnold Palmer, a source close to Roethlisberger says that the rumors "couldn't be further from the truth."

Per the source, Roethlisberger and Palmer have met twice, and they have played together at Arnold's club, the Latrobe Country Club.

"It was awesome," Roethlisberger said of his golf outing with Palmer in 2008. "It was Arnold and I on a team against [the late] Coach [Terry] Hoeppner and Spider Miller. We had a lot of fun. Just to be out there with him. He is a legend. He is maybe the greatest to ever play. It was fun to hear stories and watch him play. He chipped in a couple of times and had some great shots. It was a blast."

One of the rumors is that Roethlisberger at some point after they played together showed up at the club without Palmer, that Palmer got him onto the course, that Roethlisberger was rude to some kids, that the kids ended up being Palmer's grandchildren, and that Palmer went berserk on Big Ben.

The source denies it, and since we don't know whether the story is true or false we'll defer to the source.

And Jim Carrey claims to have been raped too.

Ben Roethlisberger's accuser told friends that the QB took his penis out of his pants in a Georgia nightclub before following her into a bathroom.

That's so much further then the truth.

A friend of the woman who accused Ben Roethlisberger of sexual assault told authorities that Roethlisberger's bodyguard "dragged" the woman into a bathroom where the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and woman had sexual relations.

In 500-plus pages of documents released Wednesday, Nicole Biancofiore told investigators from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations that her friend, a student at Georgia College & State University, "was dragged by a bodyguard to the back room in Capital [City, a local nightclub]. She was extremely intoxicated and not aware of what was happening."

Steelers: Roethlisberger to be punished

NFL Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II says the team is ready to discipline Ben Roethlisberger but the punishment will be coordinated with the NFL and won't pre-empt any league action. Story

"He had sex w/me and meanwhile his bodyguards told my friends they couldn't pass them to get to me," the accuser wrote in her statement, which was reported in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The woman also told him "no, this is not OK," according to the statement.

Roethlisberger was not charged in the incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of March 5 in Milledgeville, a central Georgia college town about 30 miles from where Roethlisberger owns a lake home.

Ocmulgee Circuit District Attorney Fred Bright said Monday that after exhaustive interviews and inconclusive medical exams, the student's accusations could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt. He also revealed the young accuser no longer wanted him to prosecute.

Now we know exactly what Roethlisberger was accused of doing that night: straight up, unprotected sex. Let's dig right in to the sordid details, shall we?

Since no charges will be brought, the investigation records become public; The Smoking Gun has 572 pages of them. Included are witness statements from those present in the bar, including the victim and her friends. Among the highlights:

•The encounter lasted about ten minutes, beginning from when Roethlisberger entered the back area "with his penis already out of his pants." The alleged victim repeatedly told him she didn't want to have sex, but he kept reassuring her, as they had unprotected sex. She told her friends immediately after, and they reported it to the first police officer they saw.

•According to her friend, both the girl and Roethlisberger were "noticeably intoxicated". His bodyguards "dragged" the victim to the back, and he followed two minutes later. When her friends approached the bar manager to unlock the bathroom door, he told them "Ben's an NFL quarterback, he won't do anything to ruin his reputation."

•The alleged victim had met up with Roethlisberger earlier in the night at another bar, where he called her and her sorority sisters "a tease." They ran into him again at Capital City, where the back room was roped off to everyone but Roethlisberger and "10 to 15 girls." One of her friends told police afterwards that she thought the whole thing was a "set-up," and that Roethlisberger had selected the alleged victim earlier in the evening.

•The alleged victim was wearing a nametag labeled "DTF" When asked, she said it stood for "down to ****." Roethlisberger replied, "I'm not down to ****, but I like to **** girls."

•One of the girls in the group left the bar angrily after Roethlisberger purchased a round of drinks, saying "all my bitches, take some shots."

•Roethlisberger's bodyguards were deleting photos from people's cameras and phones that depicted Roethlisberger drinking.

•When they got home, one of Roethlisberger's friends asked him what had happened in the bathroom. Roethlisberger told him nothing had happened, and that they were just "messing around." He said that she had slipped, and once he had helped her up, he told her they were not going to continue.

•On March 17, 12 days after the incident, a lawyer for the woman requested that the rape probe be dropped, because "a criminal trial would be a very intrusive experience."

So there you have it. By avoiding charges, Roethlisberger escaped potential jail time. But he didn't escape having the sleazy details of his night in Milledgeville splashed all over, for everyone to judge.

Why would the same issues with Marshall not be in play here? Truthfully, Marshalls brushes with the law were probably more tame. But you know R'berger is close to a suspension. So then, why would the Raiders give up all that for someone who might get suspended. And its not like Ben has to get popped for the same thing. It can be for getting in a fight. It would add on to tarnishing the image of the league.

I realize a QB would get more than a WR generally but throwing in Asomugha is way too much. The picks seem like they might be OK but even that carries the same risk that was in play for Holmes and Marshall.

Also, what is R'berger's contract like? Im guessing he's on his second, unlike Cutler when he was traded.

Giving up an elite CB, a top 10 pick, and a 3rd for a guy who may or may not be an elite QB and is one incident away from being suspended is kind of steep.

Why do the Raiders do the things they do now? How much money did they give Walker? Why wouldn't they let him quit and give them money back when he said he didn't want to play anymore? Look at there drafts, man this is a team that doesn't do anything that would seem like the right thing to do. They were trying to dump Asomugha for a 33 year old QB why would they not want to move him for Big Ben.

Why would the same issues with Marshall not be in play here? Truthfully, Marshalls brushes with the law were probably more tame. But you know R'berger is close to a suspension. Al probably wants to dump Asomugha's contract. Ben's contract is very attractive, hence if a team wants him, paying out the balance of the contract is not an issue.

The Raiders would be a perfect fit. And it'd give the stuttering AFC West some more press!

The deal makes sense for the Raiders. I don't think it makes football sense for the Steelers, but Big Ben is a ****head and Pittsburgh can afford to suck for a bit.

I think it will be Holmgren in Cleveland. They've got three thirds, three fifths, and the 7th pick. Since the Rooney's have already expressed their distaste with Ben, it shouldn't be too hard to create package. The question is, are the Rooney's so fed up that they'll trade Ben to a divisional rival?

I doubt that would happen. People in Pittsburgh HATE Cleveland. They would have issues with the fanbase if they traded Ben to the Browns. I mean problems that would dwarf the overreaction to the Cutler trade in Denver.

Sure trade him to the Browns than release the pictures they have had to buy over the years of Big Bent's escapades and get him suspended.
