I wasn't at work for this event so I am only speaking on speculation but there is something fishy with this.

First of all they found no explosives. Second this guy was the third or fourth ranking diplomat from Qatar. He says he wanted to smoke but its not like it was a transcontinental flight.

I am thinking this guy went mental or wanted attention more than some conspiracy or attempted terrorist act.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this.

The guy was seen pacing back and forth between his seat and the bathroom.
He made a joke about lighting up his shoe. (Bad idea!)
An in-boeard flight marshall was checking him out and then took action after a flight attendant confronted him and he said he was going to smoke a cigarrette.
He claims to have diplomatic immunity
The guy is now being interviewed by the FBI

Before September 11th diplomatic immunity may have gotten this guy off. But with the post 9/11 security and Patriot Act there will be no way this guy gets the blanket protection typically afforded by diplomatic immunity.

The more I read the more I think this guy just went mental or had a panic attack.

I can see it now,"Please come to the airport 5 hours before departure to insure enough time for your cavity search."

Regardless even if he pulls the diplomatic immunity card the US can as Qatar to revoke his diplomatic immunity. If Qatar declines then the US will expel him from the US and deny future entry.

Qatar is a major ally to the US in the Persian Gulf so I think they won't fight the US on this if they pursue charges.

Execute him. That will show some Jihadi ****ers we mean business.

Obama, OTOH, will probably invite him up to the White House for a beer, explain to him that
this is all Bush's fault, hand the guy a Democrat voter registration card and have all the charges dropped.

You really want to stop suicide bombers? Let it be known and shone that a suicide bomber that does the act needs to know it is his family and/or friends that will suffer his consequences with their lives. The next one after this proclamation kill his family in dramatic fashion on TV.

Baja does not approve of this message but it would accomplish it's intended purpose.

This implies that family\friends are more important than jihad to some of these lunatics.

That just isn't true.

To be fair, I don't think those 2 would be comparable scenarios. Maybe if he was lighting up a bible...
