Elam isn't planning to continue playing football
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 21, 2010 10:13 AM ET
After 17 NFL seasons, kicker Jason Elam is moving on to the next phase of his life.

This phase will include leading a group trip to Jerusalem in November according to the Denver Post, indicating that the former Bronco and Falcon isn't planning to be in the NFL this year.

Mike Klis writes that Elam, whose fourth book is due out in November, would be a worthy choice for the Broncos Ring of Fame. Elam played 15 years in Denver, making three Pro Bowls.

He was released by the Falcons last December.

Good luck in retirement Jason! Ring of Fame for sure and if they ever decide to let kickers into the hof, you'd be a shoe-in, for now you'll have to settle for your shoes being in :) Mr Clutch.

From Wikipedia - "He also holds NFL records for best extra point conversion percentage (.995), most consecutive seasons with at least 100 points (15), most seasons with at least 100 points (15), fastest to 300 successful field goals, fastest to 1,600 points and fastest to 1,700 points. Furthermore, Elam was the first player in NFL history to score at least 200 points against three or more teams (San Diego Chargers: 222, Oakland Raiders: 215, Kansas City Chiefs: 203). Elam shares a record with Steve Christie for the most overtime field goals; 9." Tons more there too.

My favorite Elam moments:

TORA TORA TORA - The last second win at Buffalo a couple of years ago with the clock ticking, no time outs left and only 14 seconds to get the FG unit on the field and snap the ball. Jason doesn't evens take his normal steps back, just hops back to about the spot and lets it fly - right through the uprights.

63 Yards - Holy cow, he just kicked it from the OTHER side of the 50!

He was just money pretty much every time he trotted out onto the field. It sucked when he didn't have the distance anymore, I was sad to see him go, but it was the right time. Have fun traveling, writing books and playing a lot of golf!

I was 12 sitting in a lexington nh hotel room with my bro. He had enough leg for at least 5 more yards.

I know Vinatieri gets all the love for being Mr. Clutch, but you'd have to put Elam right up there.

Elam was the best kicker this franchise has ever seen.

If they ever let kickers in the HOF he should be in.

I'm not religious, but I've read two of his books.

They aren't badly written. Think Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, but with a moral/religious tinge.

Elam and Yohn make a point of trying to show the points view from a football player/soldier/Christian and a Muslim and their perceived justifications for doing what they do. I actually enjoyed reading both books.

I was really hoping to see Elam get to 2000 points.

Maybe he will stay in kicking shape and something will open up during the season.

Sometimes a kicker gets hurt and a veteran gets brought in for a few games.

I will never forget that 63 yarder. You would have thought I kicked it myself the way I was jumping around my house high fiving and hugging my friends.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Jason Elam spent the last two years of a 17-year NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons. But he retired Wednesday as a Denver Bronco.

Nearly four months after being waived by the Falcons, Elam signed a one-day contract with Denver and retired. The Broncos drafted him in the third round in 1993.

Elam, 40, was a member of the Broncos' two Super Bowl championship teams.

The three-time Pro Bowler finished his career ranked fifth in NFL history with 1,983 points scored and 436 field goals made. He is the all-time leader with 16 seasons of 100 or more points.

He also shares an NFL record with Tom Demsey of New Orleans for the longest field goal (63 yards).
