Jets won't talk about possible interest in Brandon Marshall

Posted by Mike Florio on March 16, 2010 11:23 AM ET

Over the past few days, reports and contradictions have emerged regarding the potential interest of the New York Jets in Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall.

During a conference call with reporters regarding the acquisition of running back LaDainian Tomlinson, G.M. Mike Tannenbaum was asked about the possible interest in Marshall, a restricted free agent.

Per Bob Glauber of Newsday, Tannenbaum wouldn't address the issue, saying that that the team is "excited about the receivers we have."

There's a certain irony in Tannenbaum's refusal to talk about Marshall. Accused twice in the past four years of tampering with wideouts (former Patriots receiver Deion Branch and 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree), Tannenbaum is permitted to talk to or about Marshall, since he's not under contract with the Broncos.

And even though the Jets swung a deal last year for Braylon Edwards, a move for Marshall could make sense -- especially if the trade includes sending Edwards to Denver, where he'd be reunited with Brady Quinn.

Jets GM not talking about Brandon Marshall

By Lindsay Jones Posted March 16, 2010, 9:50 am MT

For nearly a year now — as long as Brandon Marshall has been rumored to be on his way out of Denver — the New York Jets have been repeatedly mentioned as a possible destination for the Broncos talented-but-troubled wide receiver.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum today was asked directly about the possibility of his team making a move to get Marshall, a restricted free agent here who has received — but not signed — a one-year tender from the Broncos.

“Brandon Marshall’s rights belong to the Broncos,” Tannenbaum said, according to Bob Glauber of Newsday, who spoke to Tannenbaum on a conference call with other New York area reporters. “He’s under contract with another team. Rex throws a lot of ideas at me and I throw a lot of ideas at him. We talk about a lot of different things. We’re excited about the receivers we have.”

That receiving corps includes Braylon Edwards, whom the Jets acquired in a trade with the Browns during last season. Tannenbaum told reporters he expects Edwards to show up for the Jets’ voluntary offseason conditioning program.

Marshall, as expected, is staying away from Dove Valley as the Broncos’ conditioning program began this week.

Like the Brady Quinn to Braylon Edwards combo was so stellar? I swear, people in New York have a history thinking their crap is good enough to take somoenes star.

It kinda sounds like he did address the issue by saying, the team is "excited about the receivers we have."

Maybe it's some sort of smoke screen, but if you weren't interested isn't that pretty much how you would answer the question????

Someone should tell Tannenbaum that the words Free Agent mean the exact opposite of "he's under contract with another team." Those are the kinds of things I like my GM to know.

Does anyone know if Lindsey Jones is single?

Yeah, let's try to bring back that Quinn to Edwards magic that helped Cleveland dominate!!!

No, that's what is called a deflection. Tannenbaum never says the Jets are not interested Marshall. If he has nothing to hide, he'd just say "We have no interest in Marshall, we are not in negotiations with him or his agent and we are not talking to the Broncos about possible compensation in a trade. In other words, we have no interest in Marshall."

That would be clearly saying the Jets have no interest in Marshall.

They think LBJ needs to go there and play basketball with 9 D-leaguers because they are more entitled to a better team then Cleavland.

Lebron is staying in Cleveland. He doesn't need the N.Y. media to help boost up his endorsement deals.

Edwards has the dropsies but I would take him and the Jets first for Brandon at this point.

David Harris or GTFA

I would have to seriously consider any deal involving Mangold or Harris. Just say no to Edwards - another problem child with inconsistent hands. I would take Cotchery over him any day.

They can't sign him anyway. They are a top 8 team. RFA rules won't allow them to sign him.

Huh? So the Jets are not eligible for Marshall?

From the way I understand it the only way any of the top 8 teams can sign other teams RFA's is if another team sign's one of theirs.

Not true. The "top 8 rule" only deals with unrestricted FAs, not RFA's. They can sign as many RFAs as they want, provided they have the draft picks to give back.

Thank you.. I was hopeing someone made the correction.

The Jets absolutely can trade or sign Marshall to an offer sheet. They aren't going to sign him to an offer sheet when every team in the NFL knows that Marshall will be traded. No sense giving up more than they need to.
