Don't remember his playing career much but do remember him doing the color with Dick Enberg on NBC (and a few bronco games)

Damn. One of the original "Fearsome Foursome" of the LA Rams. That's sad. He was a good guy.

Whoa. He called "The Drive", and I think "The Fumble" with Enberg. They were a great broadcasting team. R.I.P.

RIP...he worked a lot of Bronco games in the 80's

also:

In 1962 the Rams selected him with the third overall pick in the NFL draft and the Denver Broncos selected him with the second overall pick in the AFL draft. He chose the Rams after the rival teams from rival leagues engaged in a bidding war for his services.

He and Enberg were the best announcers on NBC for several years. He was a friend of the Broncos, and was actually drafted by Denver in the early years. He was a very astute analyst. He admired Elway.

"Great players make great plays...."

RIP.

For some reason, I thought he was already dead. I don't mean any disrespect, though. I genuinely thought he died a few years ago. Anyway, RIP Merlin...

Sorry to hear this. A familiar voice for many Broncos games in the 1980's.

Thanks for being a voice for so many great memories.

IIRC, the Broncos actually drafted him - - pre-merger, but he signed with the Rams. Great player, non-stop motor and was a real force on that line with Deacon Jones.

Absolutely. I was a fan of the fearsome foursome and Gabriel before becoming a Broncos fan in 1970. Loved Olsen. His family was from Orem Utah and his little brother, Orrin, went against my school's heavy weight for the wrestling championship in 1971 and Merlin was there and I got to meet him. Really nice, humble guy. Sad, RIP Merlin.

I didn't know this about him. Very impressive:

Known as much for his brain as his brawn, the 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive tackle also graduated summa cum laude and Phi Kappa Phi from Utah State University in 1962 and earned a master's degree in economics in the off-season during his 15-year career.

I put him 2nd, I liked Lenny and Enberg.

I liked the concept of Little House on the Prarie at the beginning plus I thought Mary was hot but they lost me just before Mary lost her eyesight. It got corny fast. Olsen was a better color guy than actor.

I am acutally reading the 1st Little house book with my daughter.

RIP

He had a great life.

John Ralston was Olsen's head coach at Utah State. Olsen and Ralston helped lead Utah State to the Sun Bowl in 1960 and the Gotham Bowl in 1961. The Aggies haven't been back to a bowl ever since.

Dude never had a dirty hit.

Deacon Jones did for him.

The Vikes had a pretty good line then too

Pretty good now, except for some oddball calls in OT, oh well.

In his 15 years in the NFL.....he made the Pro-Bowl 14 times. This is tied for the most Pro-Bowl appearances in history.

Many in football consider him the best 4/3 DT who ever played the game.
