Doggies (UNM) and Kitties (BYU) go home with a whimper courtesy of the Rebels. :approve:

Even giving UNLV the usual home court advantage - no.

Hail to thee, New Mexico,
The loyal sons are we. Marching down the field we go,
Fighting for thee.
GO! FIGHT! WIN!
Now we pledge our faith to thee,
Never shall we fail.
Fighting ever, yielding never.
HAIL! HAIL! HAIL!

Utah State is the good team, right? Can't remember if it's Utah or Utah State.

Whichever of those is the one I'm thinking of and NM are both teams I enjoy watching. Good, clean, disciplined ball with quality players. I hate watching teams commit 20 turnovers a game, drives me nuts.

Utah State this year. Utah has sadly sucked this year. I'm hoping the tourney disappoints the Cougs BADLY. If it's not Utah it's anyone but BYU.

The Lobos are currently ranked 22 in Sagarin compared to BYU who is ranked 9th.

Pomeroy has BYU ranked 5thed and the Lobos ranked 40th.

Yet BYU got swept by the Lobos (and lost to UNLV on the road).

New Mexico beat UNLV at their house but in turn lost to UNLV at home.

I think all things being equal though, I'd take BYU to win the MWC but this tournament should be right up there with the Big East, and Big 12 tournaments for excitement.

Just computer stats. This one has UNM higher

RPI isn't nearly as accurate as Pomeroy or Sagarin though.

RPI should be used exclusively to compare similar teams for seeding purposes only. IN that regard, RPI is a good tool, but for ranking teams it = epic fail.

25% of The RPI formula is based on the teams win/loss percentage.
50% of the formula is based on the teams opponents win/loss percentage.
25% of the formula is based on the teams opponents' opponents win/loss percentage.

It does not take into account home vs away, scoring margin or injury to key players. 75% of the formula is based on things outside of the teams' control. Hence the reason RPI as a ranking system is flawed.

However, when you take two 26-5 teams and compare their numbers for seeding purposes it is actually pretty fair. Or, when when deciding between two similar bubble teams to make the Field of 65, it is a good tool to use.

I like the Lobos more than BYU and I think, due to their record, they are going to get a better seed placement and easier road thus make it further but if I had to pick between the two on a neutral court with everything on the line, I think I would take BYU. They lost by 4 in New Mexico and by 2 at home. Close enough scores that those games could have gone either way and the two teams are very close to each other on my own personal "eyeball" test. Add to the fact that it is very difficult to beat the same "closely matched" team 3 times in the same year and the end result is that BYU is bound to win it.

Yeah but the Utes seem to have UNLV's number this year. Hopefully UNLV doesn't lose game number 3 to Utes. We have trouble with your size and length.

#8 team in the land about to snag a 2 or 3 seed when we win the tourney!
Go Lobos!!

Tourney will be interesting.

Lobos dodged a bullet by not having to see UNLV in the semis. UNLV is tough, and it's their gym.

UNLV/BYU will be real good, BYU the better team but with their best player Jimmer (what a dumb ****ing name, as an aside) battling mono right now, that'll be an even matchup I'd say.

Lobos need to at least make the finals. A win of the tourney guarantees a #2 seed in the big dance I think. Shouldn't be any lower than 3 though.

Screw that. My roommates on the DU basketball team just beat FIU in the Sun Belt tournament.

I think the cougs are the best team and the deepest in the league. I know NM beat them 2 times, but they were both really good games. BYU will have trouble if they meet UNLV, but I hope this is their year to beat them there. The finals will be great to watch if BYU vs NM. Seeding for the NCAA tournament will probably be determined by what the other teams do live Villanova, WV, OSU, etc... in their tournaments.

One also has to remember that UNM beat BYU with Fredette on the bench for the 2nd half and only by 2 points. I think it will be close....if BYU loses to UNLV then it will be UNM....if its a BYU and UNM final....GO COUGS!!!!

Is Schroyer going to stick around for another year?

I've never seen the AA so empty during games this season. Used to be a tough place to play.

Pretty much seals it that the MWC is getting 4 teams in the NCAAs.

I hope Schroyer gets canned, he has run the program into the ground. I haven't heard any rumors that he's going to be relieved of duties any time soon. Which just means another year of crap.

Seeing the Dome of Doom so empty is just sad.
