Oh dear God, no! Without warning, the NFL changed the conference title trophies into decapitated versions of the Vince Lombardi Trophy. And they altered the design of the playoff logos to reflect their new shiny abortion (as opposed to the more bargain price matte abortion). Why they felt the need for a change is beyond me, but it’s part of a raft of similarly uninspired minor aesthetic tweaks that the Uni Watch Blog is as horrified by as we are.

Look, NFL. Whoever you consult about design issues, just kill them right now. Uniform changes are almost always horrible. Ditto any non-jersey piece of merchandise the league puts out. I thought they’d have the sense to stay away from trophies and longstanding things of that nature, but apparently not. See, this is what happens when you let Tony Dungy scare all the gays away. They would never have let this happen

I actually like them a lot more than the old trophies. Those things look like they were designed in the 70's.

More futuristic bullshat.....my respect for teams who have gone retro in recent years increases by the season.

As long as the Broncos get one, I really don't care what they look like...

They look like giant space dongs. The old ones were cool, these look like generic Sega Bowl trophies from Joe Montana Football.

Think they look nice, to be honest.

Lots of people just assume all change is bad, when only some of it is really.

Again McD shows he has no idea how to run an NFL team. Shanahan would have never let this happen.

I think they should start making them specialized for the winners, rather than have a pre-made design. Like if a team wins with Vick. Throw some dogs fighting on the top. Maybe when a team like the Browns win you can place a nice toilet bowl on top of the trophy. The Raiders could get a jail cell. The Chargers could get a giant whale vag. The Broncos could get God looking down on the Earth with a pleased expression. I'm sure more creative people could come up with much better ideas than I ever will but you get the idea.

The browns and vick trophy can be the same one.

with the new divisional trophies it looks like they didn't think that after the victory players hold these trophies up and pass them around. There doesn't appear to be an 'effective hand holding spot' on these things. You could hold them at the bottom but they will tip over, and palming the footbal part is not a good way to hold a valuable object.

I guess they did this to make the tv logos match up and be consistent for the playoffs/super bowl

That @sshole is partially parked in a handicap spot. A metaphor for how the NFL treats it's retired players?

If it wasn't for change, then the old vintage stuff wouldn't be so cool.

Count me as someone else who likes the redesigned AFC and NFC trophies. The AFC and NFC trophies just look weird with that "marble-looking" background behind the "A" and "N"...

I wouldn't be against a change but that's a pretty uninspired change. It's basically a vector graphic which a reflection and a gradient. It's like they went out and hired a graphic designer in their first year of art school. Pretty dull and already dated. Probably paid millions for it too.

The trophies needed to be changed. The new ones fit more easily in Brett Favre's ass.

I figured as much. I was mostly razzing you.

As a brand manager (part of what I do at work, where I'm the director of marketing), I disagree with your analysis though. I think that the silver football is iconic, and that the gradiated icons are actually much stronger branding than the patch logo that they previously had. The beauty is in their simplicity. Silver football. Division logo, The word "playoffs." It works.

I won't disagree that the patch logo as you called it wasn't very iconic. It reminded me more of fine denim jeans than football to be honest.

I might like the logo more if it wasn't for the fact that it feels like an ad for an Apple product without the black box and web 2.0 reflection. It just feels a little slapped together. I know the red, blue, and grey/white go together but it still feels like it doesn't fit. I think it's the old shield logo combined with the new football shape. It feels like an awkward attempt to modernize the shield. They can't get rid of the shield of course so they added an entirely separate logo on top of it. When you put the two together to me it just feels as if the gradient football is unfinished. As if they were unsure what to do with it.

I don't know. I'm not saying I could make it better, in fact I doubt I could, designing logo's and all that goes with it isn't my interest and not my specific field. So I have to play the role of the annoying art director who stands back and says "something doesn't feel right, go try something else" and then walks off without offering any direction.

Doesn't matter though. If it sells it works. I thought Pepsi's new stuff was great and so did my girlfriend and most of the graphic designers we know. The average Pepsi lover we talked to thought it was horrible.
