View Full Version : ESPN Insider-Franklin to be traded for a #1 before Thursday (to Broncos?)

Franklin could be traded?

Aubrayo Franklin | 49ers | Interested: Broncos?

Way back in November, Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat foresaw the problem of retaining Aubrayo Franklin, and wrote that the 49ers "will take whatever steps necessary to keep him around in 2010." The first option is a contract extension, but barring that, they could use the franchise tag. In 2010, a tag for a DT will run a team $7.003 million, and a decision must be made by Thursday afternoon. ESPN's John Clayton had word from a source that the team has already told Franklin he's getting tagged.

But is it still possible that the Niners would trade Franklin before the Thursday deadline? Maiocco tweeted on Tuesday afternoon that "one league source told me he thought 49ers would part ways with Aubrayo Franklin in a trade for one first-round selection." Clock's ticking.

Here's Bill Barnwell of Football Outsiders on one team that could take a look if Franklin is truly on the block:

Upgrade at NT necessary in Denver

"If you're in the camp that chalks up the second-half decline to a worn-down defensive line, the Broncos would be wise to add more big bodies up front that fit their 3-4 scheme. One spot in particular would be at nose tackle, where Ronald Fields is a situational player stretched as a starter. If the Broncos target one player in free agency, it should be 49ers nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin, who would be the perfect fit for their needs and scheme." - Bill Barnwell

I would have no problem with that. That's what I want the first rounder used on anyway.

They could tag him and still trade him later. If we could get a first for Marshall and trade that for Franklin, I would not be unhappy at all.

I would rather take Dan Williams, McClain, or the Iputa (however you spell it) instead of him for a first.

Wouldn't upset me, considering the number of RFAs that will be tendered high - I think we could land one if we're willing to deal our 1st round pick. So would you rather have a Dan Williams or a Aubrayo Franklin? I'd be down with sending our pick to NE for Mankins which would arguably give us the best left-side of an OL in the league. Obviously draft picks are at a premium, but the chance to get a bonafide top 5 player in the league at their position like Mankins or Franklin is very intriguing.

They won't get a first-rounder, I'll guarantee you that.

If they do, it's the P.T. Barnum rule in action.

Like the idea but, imo too old for a team so far away from being good. Keep your #1 in a great round 1.

Marshall for this guy?

You guys seem to be forgeting we can still trade for Aubrayo without giving up #10/11. Trade down to late 1st n use that pick to get Aubrayo Franklin. I remember Falcons did this a few years back to get John Abraham. If we can't find a trading partner we could come to an agreement directly with SF. Trade #10/11 & #45 for Aubrayo Franklin & #17. The difference in value we trade them in draft picks is equal to giving them around #22 for Aubrayo. They can draft a guy like McClain with #10. We still have a first in #17 we can use on a guy like Iupati. We get two impact guys at our two greatest positions of need, in my opinion. What more do u want with your first 2 picks?

This is so ****ing stupid.

The 49ers might trade Franklin by Thursday.

We think Denver might want a NT this year.

Franklin to Denver?

That's not even a rumor and it barely borders on speculation, that's throwing **** up against a wall to see who will actually take it seriously and run with it.

Seems very farfetched, but I'm all for any established line help we can bring in.

Even at 29, he may have 4-5 great seasons left in him.

How many great seasons are you going to get from a draft pick?

It's all a crap-shoot, and if a guy has proven himself in the league, and can help the franchise for years going forward, it's a smart move.

ZONA

I would make the trade for a second rounder in an instant...a first would be tough

and not just a first rounder, #10. If we were picking say at #24, okay, I coud roll with that. But at #10, there is no way I do that deal. There are too many possibilites to just throw away. If we traded #10 for say #20 and picked up a 2nd round pick, then I would make that trade. See, and by doing that, we just got an extra 2nd round pick. I hope our front office thinks like that. Not just, hey let's trade our 1st for Franklin. If the 49'ers want a first, give them a first, but pull off the trade down before that and give them a later round first, and oh hell, if they want a tad more throw in a 4th rounder. Lot's of ways to do something like this without giving up the value at #10.

Pretty sure players can't be traded until March 5th to begin with.

2nd, it would make sense if they wanted BMarsh. A deal that would send BMarsh to the Niners for Franklin and a 3rd or 4th would be pretty nice. Hell, even a straight swap would be great, IMO.

That really frees up the #10/11 to go BPA.

I don't know much about Franklin though. I've heard good things on the Mane, but is he really all that?

dbfan21
02-24-2010, 06:09 AM
I'm not too comfortable with this one. If it was Wilfork, who has been productive year-in and year-out, I'd say yes. But Franklin has not been a consistent player for very long.

No thanks.

02-24-2010, 06:38 AM
Sure, the 49ers would trade the guy for a 1st round pick, but who would trade that for him? I don't see the Broncos, especially at #10 or 11, trading that for this guy. A 2nd rounder is as high as I would go and even that, I don't think so. More like a 3rd at best.

02-24-2010, 06:49 AM
You guys are nuts. A 7th year defensive tackle that will be 30 by the time the season starts and has 111 tackles and 3 sacks? This dude has had been decent for 2 years. I wouldn't give up a 3rd for this dude. What's the point? Its not like he will be here when the Broncos are any good.

Not for a 1st round pick...he's 29, which means we get 3-4yrs production if that. He's really good right now....but, you'd like to get more upside out of a 1st round pick (IMO).

Yeah, he will be 30 this year and there is no way I trade a first round pick (and #11 at that) for a 30 year old NT. I'm not even sure I would trade a 2nd round pick. That one would be a much tougher call though because he can still play, but for how long, a few more years.

It's a completely dead debate with the signing of Jamal Williams.

If there was anything to it in the first place, which I doubt, that is.
