View Full Version : Unconfirmed: Broncos have hired another coach

montrose

Just heard through my sources the Broncos have hired Brian Callahan to their coaching staff, I haven't nailed down what role he'll have. He comes from the High School ranks but has also coached at UCLA. His dad is the current OL coach with the Jets and former HC of the Raiders and Nebraska.

I'll let you everyone know once I get the news confirmed.

Looks pretty close to confirmed, I just got a text about it a few minutes ago. Hopefully the team will issue a release before too long.

If he's a quality control coach, than that is almost like an intern in my eyes. Lots of logging tape and prepping gameplan notebooks - as I understand it.

I don't think so. I've been doing a lot of reading on Don Martindale, and Mike McCoy online. I think both our offense and our defense are in good hands. BOth guys are very capable and have a great track record of success. But the person that I'm most interested in is our new offensive line coach, Clancy Barone. The guy looks like a rising star to me. Given his career arc, I wouldn't be suprised to see him with his own clip board some day. I'm very intrigued to see what he does with our offensive line.

I nerer critiqued the DL move, altho it would of been better not lose Nolan to Miami and retain the LB coach. What a loser that Parcells guy is.

Exactly! This idiot hired another coach as an assistant to make tapes and log reports?!?! Is there no end to this fool's antics? McDaniels is ripping down this franchise. With each hire he shows more and more how stupid he is! What is a hire like this supposed to accomplish?!?! We need an assistant from the high school ranks?!? Every move McDummy makes exposes his idiocy more and more! next thing you know he'll be making roster moves and drafting players! SHANAHAN NEVER HIRED PEOPLE!!!! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!!

I don't like seeing Mike Nolan go any more than anyone else here. But Don Martindale has worked his way up to this position by having some notable success along the way. He seems to have a way to get the best out of players.

I think it's a mistake to rush to judgement. We didn't end great last season, but Josh has finally gotten *his* guys in place, and the guys in the key positions have all had solid careers to this point and are looking like guys on their way up.

Kaylore
02-23-2010, 11:54 PM
Don Martindale is a bad ass. He's opinionated and angry and knows football. He's not a yes man, will call his defenses aggressively, and is a hard ass but not to the point of losing his players. He'll probably get caught with his pants down in a few games, but most of the time we'll be coming at opposing teams and it will work.

Michael Patrick McCoy (born September 6, 1948 in Erie, Pennsylvania) is a former American football defensive tackle in the National Football League. He played for the Green Bay Packers, the Oakland Raiders, and the New York Giants. He played college football at the University of Notre Dame.

Mike now does charity work by going to schools across the nation and talking to them about the importance of making good choices related to drugs and alcohol.

I would prefer a coach who was a little bit more seasoned with some college and/or pro experience, but its likely just a small position on the staff (kinda like the college equivalent of a GA), so its not too bad. While most HS coaches are very unqualified to be in the NFL...it's not universally true. IMO...the best and most innovative quarterbacks coach in the entire country is a high school coach (Darin Slack).

No...we did not hire Darin Slack, unfortunately. But whoever does will never regret it. He developed the universally acclaimed "R4" system that a ton of coaches around the country (even in big time college conferences) are using with great success.

Looking at his resume and our needs he's likely going to be a QA/QC coach working under Clancy Barone who just took over the OL duties. They brought in a collegiate coach to take over the TE spot vacated by Barone, but an assistant would be very useful in that role.

There was once a time when Raheem Morris, Kyle Shanahan, and Jeremy Bates where all similarly unqualified QA/QC guys for ONE TEAM, the Tampa Bay Bucs. They let the later two go without promoting them and the first is now their HC. The Pats continually turn over their assistants with success by bringing super motivated young guys into this kind of position and building them up. This is what NFL franchises that plan for the eventual loss of coaches due to promotion do. They develop their own in house replacements.

He'll break off 2K in our system

I understand what you're saying...
With so many experienced coaches availables, why do we need to fill our team with HS coaches?
Why are the Broncos a once proud franchise now the guinea pig for a rookie head coach afraid to hire people that may expose his weaknesses?

McDaniels can go tomorrow and hire an Pop Warner football coach, and people here will go out of their way to justify that hiring and how it shouldn't be a big deal. yada, yada, yada...
McDaniels can absolutely do no wrong!

Oh my god. Overreaction central.

It's an entry level job. This is exactly how teams are run. You give guys a first shot breaking down film and organizing gameplans, and if they succeed you move them up. If they don't, you don't.

Good god, you've clearly never run a company.

It has NOTHING to do with McDaniels, and EVERYTHING to do with setting up the organization for success down the road.

And, let's face it: McDaniels could bring Bill Walsh back from the grave to be our OC, and you'd bitch about it.

There are literally hundreds of unemployed lawyers in Boston right now. Why the f*** did my firm hire a college kid to intern in our copy room over the summer? What a bunch of idiots. They're obviously trying to ruin the firm.

Dragster, these are entry level positions. The absolute bottom rung of the NFL coaching ranks. What "experienced" coaches would do this work? None of them. That would be like the manager of a grocery store going back to cashier.

But that would mean that mock intentionally left that information out to serve his own purposes. He wouldn't do that, would he?

He's our special little guy!

Would you shut up already? You've quickly turned into the b****iest poster on the internet. You get less fun to read by the hour.

Mock doesn't bother me like he does you. Put him on ignore and quit making yourself into such a fool around here. You come across like a total idiot with your constant whining, and I know you're a much better poster than this.

Mock doesn't bother me man. I can take it when he omits info, because I can simply fill in the blanks. Notice how I did that without getting into a confrontation or making myself look like a total b****?

FFS man. Pull you **** together. You're much better than this.

One of the things I did was look at Belichick's hiring record. He did a lot of the same thing. He went out and hired guys with good football pedigrees who were hungry and committed. Josh McDaniels was one of them. He started out in the tape room in 2001, along with his buddy Dean Cesario - who was his offensive counterpart in the tape room. Josh worked his way up to OC, and is now a head coach. Dean Cesario worked his way up to Director of Player Personnel.

I figured by insulting everyone around me and derailing every thread, I'd make more friends (like mock has done). But then, I'm not "special" so I guess I don't warrant that same consideration.

I'll take your words under advisement.

By the way, can I put that "worst poster on the internet" title on my resume? The internet is huge... seems like being the worst poster on it would be an amazing achievement.

I'm not sure what make you think you're all that different than Mock. You act similar to him, and get the same deference as he does.

Josh got his start as a film room jockey breaking down defensive tape.

Now that's a good point ... maybe Josh saw something of himself in this guy.

Which, based on how Josh climbed the ladder, is a good thing.
