View Full Version : Peter Kings take on the free-agent WR class (most won't be happy)

Who's going to bite on these receivers?

In restricted free agency are four veteran Pro Bowl wideouts sure to be tagged with restrictive pricetags by their teams: Brandon Marshall (Denver), Vincent Jackson (San Diego), Braylon Edwards (Jets) and Miles Austin (Dallas). The Jets have already announced Edwards will require first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if a team wants to steal him. I expect the other three to be similarly restricted.

That isn't to say a team can't make an offer of something less and get one of those players. But keep in mind that to get one of them, you'd have to not only give a high draft choice or choices, but also pay the player $9-million or so per year. So most teams would say it's ridiculous, particularly in a draft as strong overall as this one, to give a first-round pick and $10 million a year, for example, for a wideout.

Who will be out there fishing for them? I wouldn't be surprised to see Miami and its former Dallas triumvirate of Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano sniffing around Austin -- a player Parcells nurtured before leaving the Cowboys -- but I think Jerry Jones would match any offer but a wildly excessive one ($11 million a year, say).

The top candidate, I think, will be Baltimore investigating Marshall or Jackson. The Broncos, despite what coach Josh McDaniels might say about being open to keeping Marshall, want to get a good deal for him and be rid of the guy who averages two or three team-dividing headaches a year. Maybe the 6-5, 230-pound Jackson, who just turned 27 and is one of the game's great deep threats, could be had. San Diego GM A.J. Smith loves building through the draft, the Chargers aren't one of the league's cash-rich teams, and they have some prime other restricted free-agents to sign, such as left tackle Marcus McNeill.

The Ravens are a good trading partner in one way -- they aren't afraid of taking a chance, and owner Steve Bisciotti is a risk-taker. But they're a bad trading partner in another way. They've had so much success with high draft picks in the Ozzie Newsome Era (Ray Lewis, Jonathan Ogden and Ed Reed early, Michael Oher, Haloti Ngata and Joe Flacco late) that it would have to be a great deal for them to surrender their first-round pick.

We'll see. If I had to guess, I'd say Marshall has the best chance to go somewhere, for a second-round pick.

I really hope we don't lose Marshall. That will not help us become a more talented team. If we do end up trading him, I really hope it is for a proven player and not picks. I hate giving away good players for picks.

Huh? That's all they averaged this year on offense WITH Marshall.

Where is the crying? You're the one with the exclamation points and ALL CAPS, lol.

Losing Marshall is a bad move, this is a simple fact. Fanboys such as yourself were so happy to lose the QB coming off of 2008, objective people like me said it was a mistake and the offense would suffer. Guess what? The offense was atrocious last year, and people like you were wrong. Didn't stop you from jerking off about the 6-0 start a bit prematurely though, did it?

You were wrong last year as evidenced by the offensive fall off, and you will be wrong yet again when the offense suffers from the loss of Marshall.

You should be used to being completely wrong by now though I would think

Oh, so Marshall is already gone? Pretty sure it's just speculation, but you go right ahead and throw in the towel. It's what you're best at.

"So happy" to lose the QB?? Love to see some proof of that. The worst thing I said was that it wouldn't be as bad as some of you Anti-McD folks claimed, that we wouldn't have the worst offense in the league, etc. Heaven help me for being right.

Again: "when the offense suffers from the loss of Marshall," assumes that he's already gone. I don't think he is. /shrug

Considering you take an argument that I didn't make and apply it to me, I'd say you're the one who is used to being wrong, privatebeef.

Edit: And the crying, privateBeef: "Horrid. The nightmare continues."

Get some kleenex.

Trading a high tender for a proven Pro Bowl reciever and paying him 9million is just crazy..... but taking a guy like Heyward Bey and paying him more than that makes perfect sense.

Bingo. This is what I never understood about the whole "well, no team would EVER give up a first rounder and then pay a guy big money". Why not? Every team that picks in the first half of the first round does this every single season for a complete unknown. Why wouldn't they do the same for a known? Makes little to no sense.

Whoever picks Bryant is going to be doing this very thing.

yes

I just don't think teams will want to pay for the potential risk, BM is the ultimate risk/reward right now

he absolutely brings something to the table that maybe 3 or 4 other guys in the league can bring

but he is one strike away from a vacation

I will say that if the second round pick was the first pick of the second round, plus a third, I might be down with it. Otherwise, I can't imagine we'd settle.

Marshall. Seymour can't catch, is a little slow out of the break, and his routes are sloppy at best.

And the combine starts this week. Wednesday/Thursday, I believe.

As for the Marshall/Wilfork question... it's gotta be Wilfork. Fewer dominant nose tackles than there are really excellent wide receivers.

If Moss goes I expect they'll be looking for a deep threat guy to replace him.

Marshall isn't a good deep threat, so I doubt the Pats give him much of a look.

Do you remember when the the Pats signed Randy Moss with his issues in the past with coaches and on- and off-the-field behavior issues. He has admitted to using marijuana (although he has never tested positive for it). Everyone yelled risky, but it work out and what a steal for a 4th round pick. So they would pull the trigger on Marshall but not at a high price.....
