As the NFL looks for ways to reduce the number of concussions at every level of football, Commissioner Roger Goodell said during a Sunday appearance on CBS's Face the Nation that he would not rule out a ban on the three-point stance, according to the Associated Press.

The traditional starting position for offensive and defensive linemen allows them to blast into each other, often with their helmets colliding. A two-point stance would allow players to start the process of blocking and shedding blocks with their heads in a higher position.

The league has demonstrated over the past few months an unprecedented commitment to reducing the number and severity of head injuries. The effort began not long after a House Committee made it clear to the NFL that, if the league doesn't address the problem, Congress will do it instead.

PFT Planet, feel free to let us know how much you like (or, more likely, despise) this possibility.

Works for me. You'd probably get a lot more false starts.

That absolutely sucks. Might as well not call it Football anymore. Call it "NFL Ball" and just be done with pretending it's fundamentally sound football.

It'll never pass.

ha ha or it'll just be the defense that can't do it .... the NFL loves them some offense.

If they're gonna do this, just get rid of tackling too and make them wear flags on their belts. Seriously, how much softer can the NFL get? If you don't want to get hurt, don't play football.

This should drop Terrence Cody's stock more, he needs that hand on the ground to rest!

I can't recall anyone ever getting a concussion immediately after the snap, because of the three point stance.

Might as well get rid of the helmets too and cut down the concussions.

I think it's more of a long term thing, from firing off the line and butting heads time and time again over the course of a career.

I've tried to wrap my brain around this one but I just can't. You can't play football without the 3 point stance. Might as well just play 7 on 7.

Joshtina tweet: I'm across the road from Brandon's in a cyprus tree trying out my new glavtech binoculars. Despite smoke screen reports, the potential banning of the NFL 3 point stance is a message being sent to McD's Patriot camp in dove valley, as the throw back Pats helmets feature this stance. Is about time someone did something. More on this coming soon.

i don't understand why they would want to do anything with the linemen. if you really think about it, these aren't the guys most in a position to get a concussion. they bang into eachother every play, but very few of them come with the necessary force to actually inflict head trauma on the man lined up across from them.

it is the players most likely to get slammed to the ground that are at risk of head injuries.

also, if you really think about it, it usually isn't the actual initial hit on player that causes the concussion, it is the aftermath of the head hitting the ground

but i agree, the NFL is turning into a pussy league. these guys are paid millions to risk injury. the majority have played since they were little kids and more than likely every single player has had some sort of injury because of the game, they know the risks and understand injuries likely will happen, but do it because they get paid to.

The majority seem to hate this idea which makes me think it might have some merit.

This is a brilliant move by Goodell. Even suggesting something this drastic makes it look like you're doing a lot of work on the issue. "Look at everything Goodell is doing to reduce concussions! They're considering banning the 3 point stance for god's sake!" Meanwhile, it'll never pass. Brilliant.

If you read the recent Time magazine article on this issue it's actually lineman on both sides and linebackers that are most at risk.

They might as well play flag football. but I doubt it will be banned.

does a belly count for a 3 point stance? Banning that and Cody will be in trouble.....

That'll be one way for the Broncos to get their short yardage package working.
