the Chargers would like to get a running back in return for him, or at least an extra draft pick that would make it easier for them to draft a running back.

Chargers look into trading Cromartie for a running back

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 17, 2010 8:10 AM ET

We noted a week ago that a rumor was making the rounds in league circles, apparently perpetuated by Chargers linebacker Shaun Phillips, that San Diego would trade cornerback Antonio Cromartie to Dallas for running back Tashard Choice.

That specific trade was shot down by reporters in Dallas who insisted there was nothing to it, but ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the Chargers do, in fact, want to trade Cromartie for a running back.

Per Mortensen, with LaDainian Tomlinson almost certain to leave and Darren Sproles about to become a restricted free agent, acquiring a running back is a high priority for the Chargers. The Chargers would apparently like to either trade for a veteran, or trade for a draft pick that would give them a better chance of acquiring a running back they want in the draft.

Although Cromartie started all 16 games in 2009, Mortensen reports that he's fallen out of favor with the Chargers, and that they'd be happy to head into 2010 with Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason as their starters at cornerback

I'd like to see those. I don't remember any Charger posters here saying that. Well, actually I can probably think of one or two that would say something like that.

I've always insisted that Jammer was our best corner. (I think he is very unerrated) Cromartie has the potential to be elite but the guy just seems dumb as rocks and plays with no heart.

I'm a big Marion Barber fan. If the Chargers could somehow swing that trade, I'd be ecstatic. It looks like all the rumors are about Choice though.

It's probably archived next to the threads where we dissed Rivers and revered Cutler.

Woah, no way you are going to get a Pro Bowl RB for an average at best CB who doesn't want any contact.

I'd give up a 4th/5th round pick for Cromartie, and only if my team was desperate for a CB.

Yea, I'm sure it was just a coincidence that two different posters posted pretty much the same thing at the exact same time.

Champ is still the best corner in the league.

To be fair to the SD fans, Cromartie that year had close to or did have 10 int's like Champ did the year before.

My favorite Cromartie moment was two offseasons ago when he was spouting off on how awesome he was and then when the Boltz came to town Marshall set his first team record for catches in a game against him and all Crow could do was rack up cheap shots and penalty yards on him. That was awesome.

I've heard on NFL Live last night the Chargers would consider trading Cromartie for a RB. I won't be surprised to see SD making a deal on draft day to pick up a good RB...

Jammer might be the most underrated player in all of football. He's a true pro.

He was the Chargers best defender this last season.

Very few throw at Jammer so he doesn't rack up many INTs so it's tough to get recognition in a conference with Champ Bailey, Darelle Revis, Nnamdi Asomugha, Leon Hall, Jonathan Joseph, Rashean Mathis, etc.

Cromartie needs to understand that Deion Sanders is not the best cornerback to emulate as a pro. Cromartie believes he can pick off passes, make a few big plays on the returns and nobody will care if he doesn't make tackles.

Cromartie is nowhere close to the dominant man-to-man cover corner that Deion was so he has no excuse to write off tackling.

Furthermore, the best corners in the business these days (Revis, Bailey, Asomugha, C. Woodson) are well-rounded football players that can play the run.

Well, you can't call Barber a Pro Bowl RB and not call Cromartie a Pro Bowl CB. They were both Pro Bowl selections in 2007 and to be honest people were very critical of Barber being selected that year. Barber's level of play has maintained the same so his value should be higher.

But I said I would be ecstatic if they could somehow pull of that trade. I wasn't saying that it's likely to be done. But remember, this is Jerry Jones we're talking about here. Look at how he's overpaid for players like Roy Williams and brings in problem-child players like T.O.

As much as I love Jammer, I realize he's not an elite corner. I think he's just at a level below it. A great corner who you can depend on and make some plays but isn't the all out playmaker that the guys above him are. The reason he got a lot of heat early on in his career is simply due to where he was drafted. But like you said, he's a true pro. Goes out and does his job, keeps his mouth shut and is a model citizen off the field.

Cromartie and Merriman are two players I've never really been big fans of. Merriman certainly plays his guts out, is a leader on the field and can be dominant when he's healthy but something about him just rubs me the wrong way for the most part. I've tried and tried to like him but I just can't. He's a little too cocky and too much about himself off the field. Or too 'Hollywood' as a lot of people call him.

Cromartie is everything I hate about a football player. Oozing with talent but stupid (on and off the field) and just doesn't seem to love the game. He just doesn't get it. Give me a guy like Steve Gregory who has average ability but studies his ass off, is a smart player and leaves it all on the field. He'll never be anything more than an average nickel corner but he's certainly much easier to root for.

Over the years, I have grown to respect Merriman more even though he hasn't been the same player post-knee injury. Shaun Phillips is the Chargers player who needs to shut his trap and just play. Phillips is the guy who drew the stupid 15-yard head butt penalty in the Jets playoff game, not Merriman.

I hope we Sh*tcan Gregory myself. He is an average player and proved to be a bad safety when they tried to convert him. Got outrun by a 4.65 Shonne Greene on that TD when he was right on his heels.

Cromartie.......dumb as a box of rocks and a wuss. He can cover but his unwilling to stick his hat in there is just bad. I hope he is traded for a decent pick.
I love Jammer, doesnt make big plays but is a good cover guy and is a good , solid tackler.

Merriman when healthy is a monster. Say what you want about hollywood or whatever but no one works harder than him asside from Rivers. Only problem with Merriman is he hasnt been healthy since late 2007 when Mawau cheap shotted him and he hurt his knee and continued to play on it thru the playoffs. Hopefully with being two years removed from surgery he will be back to form.

Hmm. I don't know what you're talking about with Gregory. He played well when he took over for Cason at nickel. Rivera found a good role for him and it fits.

With no CBA, Merriman is going to be here one more year, maybe two if they franchise him next year. The writing is on the wall that he isn't going to get a long term contract here. If he has a comeback year next season, hopefully they can cash in on his trade value.

Shaun Phillips is indeed a loudmouth. Good player but not as good as he thinks he is. He plays hard though. But he just needs to shut up and play the game.
