A Japanese spider crab believed to be the biggest ever seen in Britain is set to go on show at Birmingham's National Sea Life Centre.

Dubbed Crabzilla, his front feeding limbs are more than 5ft (1.5m) long and end in big claws.

The Sea Life Centre will be his home until the end of March when he will be taken to his permanent home in Belgium.

The crabs are commonly found in the Pacific in 1,000 ft (300m) deep waters but have been known to live deeper.

Curator Graham Burrows said: "It is rumoured these crabs can grow as big as four metres, big enough to straddle a car.

"He will absolutely dwarf the other crabs in there, but he's not aggressive and they should have nothing to worry about."

The crustacean has been flown to the UK en route to a permanent home in Belgium from Japan and has been quarantined in Dorset.

Spiders and crustaceans descend from a common ancestor. It is believed that that early ancestor lineage adapted to life on land and diversified.

I wonder if spider tastes like crab? ;D

Skill levels may be similar, but I imagine that the crab has a higher IQ. At least lets hope so for its sake. ;D

No, they will only chop their legs off and throw them back in the sea while still alive, and crab leg soup will be the new hot item in Japan and throughout Asia.

Ah, I guess you're right, they probably will fish them into extinction, like they are trying to do with the Minke Whales and the Fin Whales, which is an endangered species and they hope to kill 50 each year, lol. WTF is that? An animal on the endangered species list and they want to kill 50 of them per year. And their quota for the Minke Whales is like 800 per year or something like that, and they only want them for "research" they claim.

I hope the Steve Irwin rams another Japanese whaler this year.

While i dont agree with the methods i fail to see why whaling should be banned. The tuna, cod and sardine fisheries are now less sustainable than the current japanese whaling program. Douches like sea shepard (loved the southpark episode) and greenpeace send out "information packs" with blatant lies in them and people eat it up cos they love the whales.

I never said whaling should be banned. But, I don't know why they have quotas for whales that are on the endangered species list and they claim they are only killing the Minke whales for "research". You're telling me it takes 950 damn whales every year to do their research? Greenpeace is only trying to make sure Whales are not slaughtered to the point where it was back in the early 1900's. Whales do serve a purpose in the ocean eco system. Countries can hunt for whales but I think the general consensus is that the Japanese use a loophole to exploit just how many they can kill and for what reasons.

What about salamanders? Those are nice little pets, right?

Well, there are species of salamanders in Asia and Alaska that get to be 6 feet long and live to be 80 years old:

Its actually a decent sized spider. Its about the size of a brown tarantula.

However, this spider wanders into camps at night and hides in dark places during the day. It has a neurotoxic venom that will cause you to suffocate.

What an a-hole. Thats what sucks about spiders. They can pack that big of a punch. (even though they are a relatively small creature.)
