The incorrect mascot is on the far right

The Gazeta Olsztynska published an image showing the bear alongside genuine Olympic mascots Quatchi, Sumi, Miga and Mukmuk to illustrate a feature about the Games.

It appears that the newspaper lifted the picture from Google Images, unaware that it had been created as a prank by Michael Barrick, a Canadian artist and graphic designer.

Pedobear, who is on the far right of the picture, was originally devised by members of the anarchic 4chan message board as a way of mocking users who expressed a sexual interest in young people.

Since then a tasteless internet trend – or meme – has emerged in which users insert the bear into other photos in a contest to create the most inappropriate composite image.

Lol  I just read that Zach Parise got hurt, any word on how serious? It wouldn't be cool if you guys had to go into the Olympics without him.

Also I keep hearing about this "Lindsey Vonn" chick who's supposed to be the top skiier there, but she has some injury and they don't know if she'll be able to go. I feel like this might be smoke and mirrors so she can come in and dominate and then be the new Carrie Strug. Thoughts?

Yes a source of much concern for me. I heard on the radio last night that the MRI is negative, but still, I'd prefer a 100% Steven Stamkos over a 90% Getzlaf. Gonna be really disappointed if he can't go though, he's a horse.

1. Who will light the Olympic torch? -- Up until Thursday night, former hockey star Wayne Gretzky had been the clubhouse favorite to light the Olympic cauldron. The Great One arrived in Vancouver earlier in the week, his father already served as a torchbearer and Gretzky himself had dodged all questions about the lighting of the cauldron. He also was the choice of Canadians, earning the most votes in a poll asking who should be the final torchbearer. But late Thursday night VANOC chief John Furlong said definitively that the Ontario native and 2002 gold medal-winning coach will not light the cauldron. This development perhaps opens up the door for Betty Fox, the mother of the late cancer activist Terry Fox. The Vancouver native, whose statue rests outside the venue for the Opening Ceremony, raised millions for research of the disease with his runs in the 1970s. Since his death in 1981, his mother has kept his memory and foundation alive. We predict that Gretzky will be the penultimate torchbearer and hand-off to Fox, who will light the flame.

Saw the torch this morning. Almost got to see Arnold carrying it, but I think I was off by one handoff. It's kinda tough to get winter olympic fever here though since you can't even SEE snow. What snow there is on the North Shore mountains is almost always obscured by clouds. I'm just hoping I can get to the speed skating oval and catch a glimpse of Stephen Colbert

It goes away pretty quickly. Been here six or seven months for school. A lot more rude people in this city than the larger cities I've been to in the states.

Some really great action these first two days. So close to a gold in the Nordic combine. Heart breaker finish but our first medal in the event so hard to be sad.

LMAO.

We'll see if JMFJ can play disciplined positionally sound hockey for once. I heard he got paired with Orpik. I hope that's not true for our sake (USA). Both of those guys are too reckless and look for the big hit rather than the smart play. IMO...it would be better if the US paired each of them with a responsible, safe defenseman.

I think that these Olympics will be determined by those that play in the NHL or NHL rinks. Keep in mind these rinks aren't international rinks like they played in Torino. So Canada and United States have a distinct advantage there.

Jack doesn't play as "reckless" as you think, he has improved his defense a lot with the Kings. Still room for improvement, no doubt.

Haha, you're asking in the right place, Americans made a movie about the underdog winning!

International hockey is getting much more competitive. Russia and Canada have always been strong, Sweden had a bit of a lull when they changed the way they were teaching the game at the minor level, so they kind of had a generation of lousy players, but on the whole they're very strong, same with Finland. The US program has improved by leaps and bounds. A major boon for them is that there's a whole generation of sons of Canadian born NHLers that were born in the US, and play for their national program. The Czechs are in a funk right now, not sure why, but they were very good through the 90s, meanwhile the Slovaks are finally starting to come on strong.

The bottom of the barrell teams that you keep seeing getting smoked are teams where the game is still struggling to get off the ground on the grassroots level because of poor/lack of facilities, or a national interest in other sports. Some of them are making huge strides, like Germany, Latvia and apparently Norway. Austria, France and Denmark are in the same category (maybe not France so much) but they didn't qualify for these games. These programs usually have, at best, one or two players in the NHL.

One of the coaches gave her one once and its kind of become her trademark. She had one painted on her helmet if you looked close. She has been known to race slalom wearing one.

On the really cool side she has came out with a line of lingere that comes with tiara, or something like that

Only thing I can chalk it up to is girls watch it religiously and guys either get forced to by them or watch it cause nothing was really on and to make fun of it like I just did.

But to sit through three mins. of crap and then have a group of judges tell me who did the best and repeat is just stupid ...

I think ALL judged events should be removed from the games... Skating is more of a skills exhibition then a game or sport ...

Anyway I am pretty pumped for the USA vs Canada game on Sunday.

“That’s OK,” U.S. goaltender Ryan Miller said, smiling. “The whole house is going to be against us Sunday.”

“I’m anticipating one of the best atmospheres I’ve been in,” said coach Ron Wilson. “Here, it’s going to be on every TV in Canada and a good number in America. Anyone who is a hockey fan will be watching.

“I know they went up in 2002 on our soil and took the gold away from us,” forward Patrick Kane said of the Salt Lake City Games. “So hopefully we can do it to them.”

Not exactly true. Bryan Murray put that squad together. Burke lucked out with Rob Neidermeyer being acquired by the Ducks, and Scott wanting to play with him. Then there's the whole Pronger's wife hating Edmonton deal. Bryan Murray had put the pieces in place for that trade to go down. Burke finished the thing, but he was not the architect.

Burke is a dirtbag. See his actions after the Steve Moore hit job. It worked out for the Avs though as they were able to flip George Parros (A talentless dick knob) for T.J. Galiardi.

Speaking of Pronger...Lucas Sbisa has been sick in this tournament.

As to the U.S. team. Burke picked the best players available. They all play hard. What's odd is the U.S. having the best goalie in the world in their nets.

As much as I despise Burke as a human being...I do feel for what he's been through the last year. He's handled his personal issues with class. Maybe he won't be such a colossal douche bag moving forward.

Trust me, I know Burke is a huge douche. But he did put together this USA team. Along with the help of several other American NHL GMs.

Two games in a row. US hockey played like they have been together for awhile. You can always put together an All Star team like Canada has but gelling hasnt been there best as of yet. Hiller and Miller have stopped them pretty cold. Nothing like a bye to get to a medal. Canada is in trouble. Not to say it is over but I wish I could listen to their sports shows tomorrow. Same reason you don't have players in football playing offense and defense. Different players/ lines on the roster serve various roles in the game, whether it be for fore-checking, penalty killing, power play, etc. IMO Hockey is more physically demanding than soccer with all the hitting, change of direction of play, in a much smaller space than a soccer field on ice to boot, & you don't want your best players taking hits the entire game, and it helps keep fresh legs on the ice. Otherwise we'd have some seriously slow skating & tightened muscles by the end of the 2nd period.

trying skating a lap end to end in a hockey rink and see how drained you are...

Soccer is not even a ample comparison.....not every player is moving in a full sprint in soccer on almost every play. I have played both at a high level, hockey is harder.

Because unlike football, where you stand around for 30 plus seconds for the next play, it's mostly continuous play and pace of the game is constant and fast. The pace of the game is very fast, and that's why they have 30-40 second shifts. There's a lot of strategy involved with the coaches as well, they like the shuffle the lines up for mismatches etc.

soccer players are on the field the whole game, i dont get having more than 2 lines for hockey. Am i missing something?

Hockey is a very physical game, for one. I don't think you can ever compare it to Soccer on a physical level.

I remember being somewhat stunned when I saw a video demonstration that a football game contains on average only 11 minutes of actual action. Which means an offensive or defensive player is only out there running/playing for around 5 minutes. Yet they are absolutely exhausted at the end.

With hockey, as long as the clock is running you're in action. So really it's little wonder they try to keep it to really short shifts. I'm not sure how much hockey you've seen (McBleed), but if you ever see a team get backed up in their own zone and unable to clear the puck for a long time, the physical fatigue becomes visibly obvious after like 40 seconds. Kinda seems crazy given the conditioning they have, but, like football, playing a very physical sport at the highest level is insanely taxing.

Never compare a real athlete with a soccer player. Ok, I played soccer and know what it takes to run on the field but hockey is constant moving.

He was out of this world. He saved them from getting raped. The US got outshot 2-1, that's how they took a beating. But Miller was so much better than Brodeur and the US seemed to be playing with more passion, too...especially early. The US PK'ers were pretty awesome, too.

Shots don't mean dick, and you know it. They kept everything to the outside. The U.S.A. team was faster, and up to the challenge. Ryan Miller is the best goalie in the world, but he didn't steal that game.

In no way in this game did the U.S. take a beating, or come close to being raped.
