Don't you think Mangini deserves some credit for building the lines and getting the pieces in place?

Absolutely. Mangini had some amazing drafts while he was there and set up quite a few of the key players on this team.

Adding Bart Scott, Leonhard, Lito Sheppard and drafting Shonn Greene, all the while implementing his defensive philosophy and launching this team to new heights with a rookie QB.

By the way... this is the 2nd year that Rex's unit/team have carried a rookie QB to at least the AFCCG.

Super Star QB's make EVERYTHING easier.

Even Elway needed an offensive line and a running game.

I dunno.

Elway into today's pass coverage rules would be scary.

that's the key point. kids with no knowledge of how the game used to be played may think Manning is the best ever, but he wouldn't have put up nearly the same numbers if he played in the 50's, 60's, 70's, or 80's. Manning is playing in what is essentially the NFL's equivalent of the steroid era of baseball, where offensive production is exaggerated by rules that so overwhelmingly favor the passing offense and safety of the QB, that even journeymen QBs are putting up huge numbers (see Matt Schaub this past season). Manning has talent and will now be part of the discussion for greatest ever, but he's been aided by the NFL rulebook in a way that few others in the same discussion have.

This argument doesn't hold much weight. Just because Manning didn't play in the 50's to 90's doesn't mean he wouldn't still be one of the greatest ever. You will never know. But given his worth ethics, smarts, ability to get rid of the ball quickly, accurately, reading defenses, work ethics, work ethics, studying...work ethics, etc I think he'd be ok.

People can talk about this "time" argument all they want. It's like saying, Revis or Champ Bailey, or Nhamdi are 100x better than the defenders back in the day because they don't have the rule book in their favor. The game evolves, offenses/defenses evolve.

It's not about what you would do in another era, it's about what you do in your era that makes you the great or the greatest ever. People make arguments of Jordan not being the best ever because there is much more talent today, but not much weight is put into those arguments.

Manning wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the football played in 50's -90's , etc because as the game evolves new people will arise with past knowledge given to them as a gift of history that these new people will be able to use in their favor.

It's about what you can do in your time, and how much success you can have in the time you're given. That's the only fair bar to judge everyone by. If you can dominate you're era, that's all that matters,- that's the only opportunity you've got.
