—The 49ers are planning to place the franchise tag on nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin, who is scheduled for unrestricted free agency, unless they first sign him to a contract extension.

i was kinda hoping we could snag him

Lol wasn't he our backup FA signing if we didn't get Wilfork.

Sucks. Really wanted to take a run at this guy but considering the CBA status, I think we'll see a lot of 1 year deals with the tags (I believe each team gets four - two franchise and two transition) and RFA tenders.

why do we have such a hard time finding a stud DT? when did we have a pro bowl DT? ever?

I think Trevor went one year as a DT...

Even if Wilfork and Franklin are franchised. I would like to see the Broncos take a run at one.

we cant be giving up the #10 or 11 pick in the draft for either player. Plus we'd have to give up more then that to get a franchised player. I think we need to address the position, but not at that cost.

Yeah you're right, he always felt like a DE bc he was able to get to the QB and moved around quite a bit.

he seems like a piss poor candidate to franchise....like franchise Jeff Feagles or Jay Feely....

Trevor went twice as a DT and twice as an End.

No doubt there will be a good one at our draft slot

Would you give up Moreno, Ayers or A. Smith for a top 5 NT?

I'm starting to think I would.

They should've just taken Brace once Raji went last year.

I still think they could've moved up a little to take Raji.

For a franchise NT like Wilfork? I would give up a first rounder and then some.
Obviously the best option is to draft someone and coach them up. But the bust rate is so high for Dlineman, and even if you do draft a good one, they take years to show their value. Another option is the Shanny method of getting some broken down DT or NT on their last legs a la Sam Adams. That works only for a few games.

At some point in time, we need to get elite young talent to stop the run, which has historically correlated highly with wins. You pay big money and picks for elite talent.

I thought our Dline woes began once they let Keith Traylor walk.

Traylor went on to make the Dlines better everywhere he was.

Ruben Carter was the last real good NT that we have had, i.m.h.o.

I stand corrected! I wish Kragen would have been as strong as Carter, he was a beast.

We tried to move up to take Raji. I forget if we just couldn't find anyone to trade with or Josh and Co. decided the cost was too high but ultimately it didn't happen.

The problem with taking Brace was twofold. First, he was overvalued (by a whole round or more depending on who you ask) due to the very shallow DL class. Secondly, there are some pretty legit questions about if he would be a true impact player or just the benefit of playing next to a bonafide stud in Raji. Think Ryan Sims all over again, possibly. That's why you saw a team take him and put him in a position to learn from arguably the best NT in the game.
