They did the same thing with the Navy on MLK day. It was like "in honor of MLK, we're serving a traditional black meal."

Well they are now issuing an apology so someone got their panties in a bunch over it...

“The plan to serve a Southern-style meal in recognition of Martin Luther King Day was well intentioned but highly insensitive in light of certain hurtful cultural stereotypes still harbored in parts of our society.”

I don't personally find it racist or insensitive... But having worked in the school system for a while it just struck me as incredibly stupid to think this would not blow up. Trust me, you will never see a more sensitive group of people, than the parents of students.

Garcia Bronco

What, no William Tecumseh Sherman Day?

They don't celebrate Sherman in the South...strange isn't it?

Lee-Jackson-King Day was a holiday celebrated in the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1984 to 2000.

Robert E. Lee's birthday (January 19, 1807) has been celebrated as a Virginia holiday since 1889. In 1904, the legislature added the birthday of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (January 21, 1824) to the holiday, and Lee-Jackson Day was born.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan approved an Act of Congress declaring January 15 to be a national holiday in honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Since 1978, Virginia had celebrated King's birthday in conjunction with New Year's Day. To align with the federal holiday, the Virginia legislature simply combined King's celebration with the existing Lee-Jackson holiday.

In 2000, Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore proposed splitting Lee-Jackson-King Day into two separate holidays after debate arose over whether the nature of the holiday which simultaneously celebrated the lives of Confederate generals and a civil rights icon was incongruous.[citation needed] The measure was approved and the two holidays are now celebrated separately as Lee-Jackson Day and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Seriously this could be taken the wrong way. I had to look at it a few times before I give it the ok.

I see there is no malicious intent, but come on that just feeds into the stereotype. See what I did there with the word feeds?:afro:

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, that meal sounds delicious. Wish they throw in some sweet tea.

Swap out the collard greens w/ cornbread and take off the biscuit and I'm there. You wouldn't serve peach crisp w/ watermelon.

Oh, btw, I was born in Virginia and I'm "white". That's a meal my Grandma would have served up for lunch and I would have happily eaten it. Southern style sweet tea is nice too. I buy it in cans out here in Cali but it's just not the same.
